A new blog page that reveals in how to make deductions considering only one type of candidate at a time (I call this coloring), will use today's tough puzzle for the illustrations.

The new page should be available about 2 hours after the new day here at sudoku.com.au.

The page will be available through the link in the upper right column, directly under 'Check out the Sudoku Blog'.

I will attempt to KISS - Keep It Simple S***** !!

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR to all...!

Sure was some cutesy candidate placement. Lots of useless hinges (3 of a candidate in an 'L' shape)Shoulda noticed the hidden 47 earlier although a 2-string kite and, and I HATE these, a finned swordfish, was the key to cracking it without coloring. Have a nice weekend, fellow (UTC -5.00) friends.

1) Start at 23 filled, the given puzzle. Unique Possibilities to (UP) 27.
2) coloring on 7's: b7 == b5 -- f5 == f3 -- h3 == h8, forbids a8 & i7=7 UP 81.

Hi Steve, well, I see them as patterns when I highlight individual numbers. Makes it easy for me to spot locked candidates etc. an x-wing is 2 parallel pairs of a candidate. if they're alone in the rows, eliminate the rest of that number in the columns or visa versa. When I run out of reductions and locked candidates, can no longer see intersecting pairs meeting at a hinge (2-string kite) or parallel connected pairs (skyscraper), or some sort of fish then I start coloring one digit of 2 in a cell , following the chain of conjugate events until there is either a paradox, 2 identical peers in a house or when I run out of valid places to color, then I start coloring the remaining digit, which eliminates any candidate both colors 'see'. Your proof images, showing all candidates for cells and highlighted cells can't be much different than I use for solving puzzles. I use SudoCue. Freeware available on sudoku.net where I learn how to solve tougher puzzles.

Didn't anyone notice the COMET?

Susan, you should be able to turn off the 'blinking' ad by clicking on 'Go to the No Animated Ads' link to the right of the puzzle.
