maen all! i couldn't get medium either. they look like pygmy or burrowing owls except the tails are a bit too long. mostly all birds with full plumage are full grown. they show their maturity as they molt. they get more colorful and better defined as they age. most birds are full size in about 30 days from birth(hatching). later...

Hi All, this is not my photo, but I'm fairly certain these are two Tawny Frogmouths, not owls but members of the Nightjar family. They are gentle creatures and are native to Australia and Southern New Guinea. They are nocturnal and eat insects.

Ian, I think you are correct. They look a bit disgruntled to be spotlit! My guess is also that they are young ones, waiting for parents to bring the tucker. I usually see them in groups up on large limbs, huddled like this.

Robin, we had a family of them roosting on a gum tree in our backyard and one evening there was a thump and a dreadful commotion outside our front door. The motion-sensitive front light had triggered and there, on the front doorstep was a wide-eyed, dazzled Tawny Frogmouth saying 'What the **** was that?'
Thankfully, it recovered quickly and flew off.

Those two owls remind me of a camping vacation where our camp sites were under a pair of owls during mating season. Oh what a long night that was.
