Spider Rock of Canyon de Chelly, northern Arizona

Canyon de Chelly is both a national monument and home to the Navajo Indians. This photo was taken from the top of the canyon looking 800 feet down. The Indians have a legend about these tall "spider rocks" that gave them their name, but I cannot recall the legend anymore. Our Navajo tour guide told us that in his youth they actually climbed up and down these steep canyon walls to visit friends on the other side. His uncle still has his summer home in the bottom of the canyon.

Canyon de Chelly is one of my favorite places on earth...coming in second only to Chaco Canyon.
