Black Hawk Statue overlooks the Rock River, near Oregon, Illinois

Black Hawk was defeated in a war in the early 1800s, in what is now northern Illinois. Abraham Lincoln fought for the USA. Now, a 48' tall Black Hawk looks out resignedly across a valley of the Rock River transformed by the white man. June, 2009

I can see the resignation and sadness. A reminder to us all. He is beautifully framed by the trees and the sky, Jim. Lovely.

I love this statue, Jim. I love the way the rock is in it's natural form and then flows into the carving. Just right for a spirit of the earth.

This statue is unique in that it is not a carving - It is cast from concrete! According to Wikipedia, it is the second largest freestanding concrete statue on Earth.
I am white. I am Native American as well. I simply sigh and hope that knowledge of our past mistakes will keep us from making them again.
God Bless America.
