Maybe, Sacky similar leaves, but the Hornbeam (it's related to the beeches) flowers as a catkin! I'm not even sure it's a Whitebeam: http://www.british-trees.com/treeguide/whitebeams/nbnsys0000003448

I think it's Viburnum plicatum, Kate. The white beam flower in my book has a much denser flower. The leaves of the two genuses are very similar though and difficult to tell part. I have a hornbeam in my garden and its leaves are similar too.

I agree with you Sacky - Viburnum plicatum, it is!! Thanks very much!!
I find it a lot easier to identify our native flowers than the European ones!!
