Space Shuttle Atlantis and SRBs

A few seconds after Shuttle Atlantis dropped her spent Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB), their engines glow with heat beneath the shuttle (center white dot) as they fall to the Atlantic for recovery. This was onthe Canon's 40X setting, and the SRB were not visible to the naked eye, as they were nearly 100 miles downrange.

One time I was camping in Joshua Tree National Park and saw a space shuttle being piggy-backed on a 747 out of Edwards Airforce Base on it's way back to the cape. It was stunning and too close to even pull out binoculars! Didn't have a camera handy, though :-(
