American Opossum & Young (Didelphis virginiana)

At the farm in Dixon, I noticed the cats scattering - and soon saw the reason, a very large opossum was coming to eat some of the cat food the farmer left for them. Aussies note: this is North America's only marsupial! June 6, 2009

I always think of opossums as ugly, mean and scary. Our dog used to corner them in the back yard. They can be aggressive, or just flatten themselves out and play dead. I once dragged the dog in and went back out to scoop up the 'dead' opossum for disposal, and it was gone! This mom looks (dare I say it?) soft and fluffy!
