At the flicks

Watched the delightful Bride and Prejudice again last night. Good thing I don't have webcam coz I'm jiggling around the house to the infectious melodies and desperately hoping the resultant weight loss will have me looking like the drop-dead gorgeous star.......

yes Mongol - sorry for the delay - just went and saw Unfinished Sky...

Mongol was wonderful, especailly on a tummy full of falafel and pides (Istanbul...not quite Mongolian but sort of close enuf). It was beautifully filmed, not one hollywood actor in sight, subtitled and sumptious. A friend piked out because she had heard it was very violent, but apart from a few of the battle scenes, it wasn't as violent as it had been made out to be. Mainly deals with Genghis' early years and what the circumstances were that led to his drive to unite the Mongols and become as powerful as they did. Not a fast-paced film, but for me it didn't drag (as has been said by some critics). A good 'un...8 and a half stars I reckon.

The shorts before Mongol showed Unfinished Sky with William McInnes - gorgeous man that he is...

After my obligatory EB/hot choc this a.m. saw Unfinished Sky about an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan played beautifully by ...someone...McInnes takes her in and an intriguing plot unfolds. This movie will not make big bucks at the box office which is a real shame - a little gem it is. 8/10

Mary - just don a sari - it hides everything...but you need hardly drop any weight luvvie - you're as skinny as!!!

Read that Unfinished Sky was a European movie called The Polish Bride and ...get this...the SAME actress played both the Polish bride AND the Afghani refugee. Must be some sort of record..... and a damn fine actress

Hi all - just back from Mamma Mia and Mary told me to post a review here. If you like Abba music and you like the scenery around the Greek Islands, you'll like the movie just for those reasons. Once I got over the age discrepancy between Meryl Streep (never a favourite with me - sorry!) and Colin Firth (gorgeous!) - I loved it. Definitely a feel-good movie. Streep for an Oscar - NO! My rating - Four and a half stars (that age business lost it a half star for me).

Meryl Streep is not a favourite of mine either.
and yes Colin Firth is as you say gorgeous.
Hubby and I saw the stage show a few years ago when it was in Perth.
We loved it !!
So am looking forward to the movie.

Thanks for the review, CynB. I happen to love the Meryl, and can totally believe that 20 years ago, CF would have slept with her. Some sad news, girls: the Colin is 48 (FORTY-EIGHT! Can you believe it?). Almost 50. Not that that's old, mind you, but it means he can't play the young rogue in too many more JA book-based movies. Sniff.

Never mind. Just realized we have 40 years to watch the Colin play the middle-aged, and then the old rogue. I feel much better now.

Lee & I went to see Mamma Mia & loved it yes Colin Firth is lovely Meryl Streep was good in it I like her & I have seen her in some good movies the Abba music & scenery was really good one movie critic gave it 5 stars I totally agree with him

Oh Terry, it's comforting to know that the Colin is only a tad older than me and that I still may be in contention if he ever happens to come to Perth for a meat pie...but could he really play the rogue? is he not a little too soft around the edges, and those big cow eyes...could they ever be devillish looking? could he ever say "bit ch, I don't love you" (this is on-screen btw) to a woman who has given up everything to be with him whilst cheating on his wife and part-time pregnant girlfriend with conviction and at the same time not losing his animalistic charisma?? I reckon he could pull it off...

I love the Meryl too.

Saw Children of the Silk Road...beautifully filmed, liked the story (true-ish) but Jonathon Rhys Meyers as george Hogg was miscast in my opinion, didn't have the screen presence to carry it off (in my opinion), was just wrong and a bit wussy (in my opinion). Stay around for the final credits - most poignant part (in my opinion).

Saw shorts for a film which i can't remember the title of BUT the Colin was in it and he seemed rather a nice chappie, I'm really doubting whether he could seriously play a rogue. Also saw the shorts to The Savages with Phillip Seymour Hoffman - looks promising, and i haven't checked my spelling in any of this as I'm tired and need to go to bed...nitey nite all.x

PSH is the name. I talked a while ago about Silk Road and JRM and completely agree. In fact, US critics unanymously asked what that casting was about. They couldn't believe (nor could I) that 2 beauties could fall in love with him.

I second Billy's motion and it passes with 3 votes. Mary is officially declared clever, yet humble, modest, AND self-effacing (if there are redundancies in the motion it's too late because it has carried and because the Chair said "Too bad.").

For JRM at his best, see Murder by Numbers if you haven't already. Though it's a Sandra Bullock movie, it's not pure Hollywood pap (mind you, I'll pay the price of admission to anything with Bullock b/c I just like her a heck of a lot). It has nice surprises like the edginess of SB's character, the hot sexual tension b/w her character and Ben Chaplin's (a hottie a la Joaquin Phoenix, whom he resembles a lot in looks and moodiness), and Ryan Gosling showing why he would deserve to be nominated for an Oscar soon thereafter (MBN came out in 2002), and is destined to win several during his career. Forgetting the ridiculous plot and just watching the actors trying to be serious about their craft makes me give MBN 7/10 stars.

Speaking of Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl is a hoot and a half. Gosling shows the daring of some of the finest actors by flying out to the edge of the envelope for this wacky character.

RG was wonderful in Half Nelson, a quirky little movie that came and went with alacrity....'druggie teacher'... too controversial....

Actually, RG was nominated for an Oscar for Half Nelson, and according to imdb, it was nominated for 21 other awards, and won quite a few. I liked that movie a lot, also. Need to watch it again.
