Eve, this is a cecropia moth. It is a giant silk moth. Check it out here at Wikipedia(a great place to find things): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyalophora_cecropia. I found one several years ago on my deck one summer night. They are incredible.

It's hard to tell exactly how big. Could you tell us approx. how many inches? Guess I'd better go read up on Wikipedia. Another new thing I have learned in Sudokuland - thanks, Eve & Rena.
