Hi Bob! Guess your ship's in drydock there in NM? Nice of Jeb to get it all tidied up for you. I've brought a nice ships's decanter of Pusser's rum! We need some other former Navy folks to stop by so we can start our own reunion & reminisce a little about the good old days. I remember going to a party on board a Canadian ship that pulled into Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico when we lived on the base there. I was shocked to discover that they had a fully stocked bar on their ship & not just for the party! Can you imagine allowing drinking on board U.S. ships!!!

Hello Bob, I was told there was a party on here but nobody seems to be around. I'll just have to get stuck into this bottle of wine by myself until the others turn up.
I think I can hear the noisy mob coming now. The party is about to start.

The first ship I served on was the USS Josephus Daniels (DLG 27) She was new construction at BIW when I reported aboard. Google the man J. D. and you will find out what happened to the grog ration. Pride in a new ship and knowledge of what her namesake did to the Navy created mixed feelings among the crew. SO, with Kathy's generous offering lets broach the cask and splice the mainbrace. Here's to those who remain at sea.

Hi Bob. I'm curious about your comment on the picture from Zimbabwe on the hard today (13/01/07). Was this your picture, and can you give some more detail as to where this was and what the local folklore thinks it might have been? If so, post a response on my page. Thanks!

Andre,

I have scanned about 20,000 images or focus movies as they call them and I have tagged about 200 as possibilities and so far the home team at Berkeley have identified about 20 of those as likely candidates. Probably 30 or 40 are identified as probable inclusions not stardust and the others are awaiting review. I can spend hours a day on this. I am having fun with it.

I'm afraid I can't afford an hour or two each day on the computer while I'm still working full-time Bob. Sounds like you're going great guns though. I guess you and André will have to be the site Sudoku reps! Good luck!

Hi cee cee,

Nice to hear from you. Sorry you lost touch with your friend but I think you have made a few new ones since then.

We are finally getting some winter here in the last week. Some cold and snow. THe mountains are beautiful under the white blanket and the ground can use the moisture.

Hi Bob
Loving yr pics of Zim - I was born and grew up there and spent many school holidays in the areas you are showing.Have been living in South Africa since I got married and yearn to go back to visit Zim. South Africa is too Westernised and although I love it here it is not the true Africa that I miss so dearly. Africa has a soul that you find no where else on this planet - it is truely a special place in spite of its problems.
I have found a very interesting site that you might want to check out - imagesofempire.com - and if you click under Zimbabwe Victoria Falls you pick up some fascinating photos of Vic Falls taken around the turn of the 18/19 century - showing a cableway and car taking victorian visits on trips over the falls. Have a look when you have a moment.

Lucy,

Thanks for the information. I will surly check it out and pass it on to my daughter. I think I get a sense of what you are talking about through her. Christine also fell in love with Africa and has been back several times. Most recently helping to set up and AIDS clinic in South Africa. And, although I was only there for three weeks, it was beyond a doubt the trip of a lifetime. The most memorable was probably the first two days when we were visiting the school where she was stationed, meeting her friends in the local township and in the nearby village. This was in the country outside of Hwedza. This is where I felt I met the “real” Africa. After that we went out on the tourist track. From one end of Zimbabwe to the other. Nyanga, Vumba, Matopo, Bulawayo,Vic Falls, Hwange, Kariba, and even a little time in Harare. In those days (94) she called it “Africa for beginners” because it was so civilized. Unfortunately the early rumblings of trouble with Mugabe were starting even then.

Bob - no, I don't ski (now!). I have a very bad knee (the orthopedic surgeon told me the other day that an artificial knee was definitely in my future) - from a skiing accident when I was 10 or 11. We lived in Montana until then.
I plan to just relax, read, and do some walking with my wife and springer spaniel.

Hello Bob, just dropping by to say hello, have fun
Judy  From San Diego
Hi, Bob. Yes, I had looked through your photos before, but I enjoyed the journey once again! Was the Rio Bravo work a church or school-related project? Isn't it too hot to hike in New Mexico in the summer? We hike all over Southern California in the winter ... lakes, mountains, desert, and forest, but we are in our element during our four months in the Sierra Nevadas. There will never be enough time for us to see all that God offers there. I'll check back here on your page if you care to respond! It was fun ''talking'' with you!

Judy,
Thanks for the nice comments. The Rio Bravo project is through returning Peace Corps volunteers ( of which my daughter is one ) She lives and works in Austin, TX and is very active in that organization. Whenever she is in town she goes with the group over thanksgiving weekend to work on that school in a squatters camp along the railroad tracks. Over the years it is getting very permanent and it looks like a real community. They have running water, electricity and at least at the school, high speed internet service. Sanitation is rather primitive with no infrastructure. But, maybe someday.
The mountains in the summer are rather nice. Especially in the morning. I try to get out there early and do all the climbing in the morning and heading back down in the afternoon. Once you get over 9000 ft, the air is fresh and the breezes are lovely.

Thanks for your response, Bob. Your daughter is a very special woman, and she must be a joy to you and your wife. The ongoing work at Rio Bravo is pretty exciting. I know what you mean about the temperatures at 9000' ... our cabin above Mammoth is at 8950'! You know, we ought to organize a sudoku hikers adventure, and actually trek out someplace. That would be more fun than sitting in a bar or restaurant and talking, don't you think? Good to chat with you.

Judy,

For sure, Eileen and I are very proud of our daughter. If you saw the pictures from photobucket, she is the one with the paint brush in her hand. The plastic coffee cup is for the custom color combination for the door frame.

A sudoku hikers adventure sounds like a great idea. All we have to do is figure out when and where to get together. How many of us do you suppose there are out there?

I think I will have to add another category or two to photobucket. I need to include some family pictures.

Take care
