My father was a POW on the Burma Railroad and Changi. His best mate (Skeeter Wren) was sent to Sandakhan and died on the death marches. This was the only time and place in Japanese Captivity that you had a better chance of survival if you escaped. Plans were made to save these murdered POW's, a batallion of soldiers were based on the tablelands in FNQ and were ready to go. McArthur would not supply the planes, so instead in excess of 200 men died needlessly. And the Australian Government of the day covered the atrocity up for years.
