Crablike Spiny Orb Weaver Gasteracantha elipsoides

BOO! Happy Halloween! This 3/8" long spider really does it in the Halloween spirit, donning a smiling mask on its abdomen. Does this smiley face fool insects into thinking it is friendly??? October 22, 2009

This was a difficult photograph to take. The spider was hanging in its web, about 8 feet off the ground, just inside my swimming pool's screened enclosure. I got a chair to stand on, so I could hold the camera still.
However, the spider itself was on its web. which swayed slightly in the breeze. It made it very hard to keep the camera focused on the animal, even with macro mode on.
With insects, the camera rarely focuses on the insect, it is just too small. So I trick the camera by aiming at my fingertips, just in front of the lens, to get the right focal length and light aperture; then aim the lens back at the insect, move it in focus, then take the shot.
I took more than 30 images of this animal, culled to three, and chose this one.
It has been cropped out of a much larger photo (love e-photography!) It was also rotated 180 degrees so the 'smile' would be right-side-up.
