"a lot of people say that the Harry Potter books are 'nothing special'" As we say in my country, J.K. Rowling can laugh all the way to the bank!

Just watched Doubt and I'm ambivalent b/c I don't think the screenplay, given the benefit of hindsight, leaves any doubt. Discuss?

Doubt Spoiler!!! Are you being ironic or are you really asking? If the former, we're on the same page.

Hubby and I went to see Star Trek today (he's the trekkie, I'm just the happy recipient of a date with him!). Knowing the gist of the story of Star Trek, I thought this was an interesting twist. The special affects were suitably over the top in a scifi kinda way. Clever casting too. Hubby loved it and will be going back with his similarly geeky youngest daughter! Cosmic heaven.

Doubt spoiler!!! Mary, given hindsight and what we've learned in the past 10 years, was the point supposed to be that while we have no doubt (b/c of his reaction and subsequent action after she set him up, and out knowledge that w/o hard evidence from prior assignments, and maybe even w/), that poor nun w/a nose for no-goodniks would have to wonder for another 35 years or so?

Irony schmirony!
yep....
I thought the most poignant character was the boy's mother. The choices that poor woman had to make....

I've heard ST is very good. Just watched The Baader-Meinhof Complex...21/2 hours that went through ten years of history. Acting terrific, the two female leads were fantastic. I only remember a little (mere babe in arms at the time ) but it was interesting to see what actually happened. I left feeling that a lot of questions went unanswered, mainly because they tried to capture everything.

Saw ST and though I am most definitely not a ST fan, I enjoyed it. It made sense as a stand-alone though I obviously missed the numerous 'in-jokes'. Personally I think moviedom could use less smart-ass, wise-cracking, super-intelligent, 'young-gun' heroes....what's wrong with understatement????? whoops...silly me...it's Hollywood!

Saw Taken with Liam Neesom. He couldn't save it. You want understatement, don't look for it here. Old-gun hero in ridiculous plot and climax that made you feel stupid for watching.

Hello Movie fans. I can finally report that I have seen a film - and an adult one! Went to see Angels & Demons today and thoroughly enjoyed it, just for entertainment value. I actually liked it better than the DVC probably because I had not yet read the book, I will now. I always get too critical of a film if I've read the book first. This time I was also accustomed to seeing TH as Langdon which I felt was miscasting last time - another case of reading the book and having pictured someone different in my mind. It was far-fetched and I could pick jolly great holes in it if I tried but, if nothing else it was terrific to see Rome again and the places I recognised from when I was there in '96. 7 out of 10. Went with a friend today and we hope to make it a regular thing, so hopefully I may be posting more often.
Terry - totally agree about Taken. My son told me to watch it - 'It's great' (NOT)!

Saw State of Play, an old-fashioned newspaper scoop movie...soon to be rendered irrelevant in this on-line age. Enjoyable.....

Saw Samson and Delilah, a love story set in the Aboriginal outstations and camps in The Alice. Searing and poignant, I none-the-less felt annoyed at the gender imbalance of 'trouble'. .. without getting into a feminist diatribe...this was definitely made by a bloke. Still well worth watching.

He's Just Not That Into You is a hoot and a half. I rarely laugh out loud at a movie, but I had to pause this one at one point to enjoy myself without missing too much of the next scene. Unbelievable cast, nice characters, and life situations we can all relate to. And if it wanted to feel good in the end, who can blame it in these times? A perfect little movie.

Defiance is an excellent movie about Jews who hid in the woods of Eastern Euorpe during WWII. Daniel Craig very watchable as oldest brother/leader of the group.

Saw Revolutionary Road. We knew it was a downer, but weren't as impressed as the reviewers were. Maybe it's because the characters are so unsympathetic. Great acting all around.

Hey Terry, looks like the GFC has hit the Forum. No-one is watching any movies (or at least writing about them)! Of course Billy is engaged in swanning around the Old Dart in a state of Connubial Bliss, so I guess reviewing the latest HP is not top of her agenda......but still, you would think she would consider popping into the local multiplex for the sake of Old Times......I mean too much CB MIGHT be bad for one?

CB bad? Doubtful! Been meaning to drop her a line about the new state.
Have my boys home as well as a nephew. Dealing with the testosterone overload by treating all (and myself) to the new Harry Potter movie. Looking forward to it, not ashamed to say.

Hey Terry, it was TOO MUCH CB that MAY be bad for one....excess of serotonin, inability to see properly because of the stars in one's eyes, surfeit of icky conversations....still I guess Billy will soldier through....
Let's know about HP.

What a way to have to slog. Hope it's all she anticipated and much more.
HP was disappointing. Slow slow slow. Characters still as likable but the boys with me found the teenaged love a bit much. How quickly they forget how mooney they were at that age. No big battle at the end for some inexplicable reason, so fizzled to a close. Hard to imagine how the next one will be much more interesting since the first half of book 7 has so little plotting. My rec: wait for the DVD.

Hey Terry, what about the POE? The great AR? In my local review he was considered 'the best bit', 'delivering his withering one-liners with lip-smacking relish and stealing every scene he's in'.

Alas, AR is in too few scenes. His hair was a bit more washed, making him less oily than in previous installments, and I don't know why. He is such a hoot, he can dish all the smarm one could wish for in an apparent villain.
Remind me... what does POE stand for?
