Hey Terry, who'd a'thunk it! It was the 2004 movie with Zooey Deschanel, Hank Azaria, Piper Laurie, Debra Winger and a sleazy Ray Romano. Not great cinema, but watchable.

I see that Winter's Bone has rave reviews in the US. I read the book, and while I enjoyed it very much, it made me very glad not to live in Ree's world. I don't think I'll watch the movie, as I'm a gutless coward, but I wish it well.

I watched 'A Single Man' directed by Tom Ford and starring no less that Mr 'Edible' Colin Firth. Unusual film although I did enjoy a little 'cheek' exposure by the sea when Colin and his 'beau' get nakid!! Then right at the end it said body doubles had been used...Oh Mr. Firth...

Evening everyone. Finally been to the movies, thanks to Mary/BL, because she was unable to make it, she gave me and mine the freebies to see the movie The Burning Plain, staring Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger.

Sylvia sleeps with any Tom Dick or Harry and is depressed.
Gina (housewife and mother of 4) has affair with married man.
Santiago and Mariana, two teenagers each with a parent that was killed in accident, find love, run away to Mexico.
In Mexico, a motherless Girl, Maria (11), whose father is badly injured in a work accident is sent with father’s best friend to look for her mother.
This movie moves along slowly, most of it is set in the dry desert of New Mexico / Mexico. During the movie the storylines merge one by one. ‘The choices made by some affects the outcome of many’!
The movie does have nudity, sex, language, nice scenery. I thought it was well made and acted.

Dead on definition of culling. Current goal in life is to get one car in the two-car garage this week. Not complaining, though. I actually like simple tasks, and my life currently is pretty much nothing but.

Movie recommendation: Little Children (2006). Never even heard of it, but it was uncharacteristically free On Demand on Comcast (uncharacteristic because it received award nominations, good reviews, and didn't feature a homicidal female or killer insect, like most of the freebies from our cable company). I think I found this forum after its release, so you guys may have talked about it already.

Won tix to see The Four Lions, a 'jihardist comedy'. I think I was waaay out of the intended demographic as I found it largely unfunny and in some cases deeply offensive. I do not want to be desensitised to the thought (let alone sight) of people being blown up by suicide bombers. An intended aim was to demythologise suicide bombers as 'hey, they can be bumbling idiots too', but I don't see the point in that! Nowhere did the film question the rationale of why a fairly well-off devoted husband and father would chose, plan and execute such an act.....and that was the scary part!

Actually paid to see Me and Orson Welles which I enjoyed. Was worried that ZE would not fare well as the main character, but everyone else was so good it didn't matter (and he was ok). Went with a movie buff who delighted in identifying the references and in-jokes.
Also paid to see Ghostwriter and enjoyed that too. Puts a whole different complexion on the 'special relationship' which co-incidently was shown as trailer. EM was as gorgeous as ever and the baddies were suitably conspiratorial.

PS CM was fabulous as OW...

Me again.... won tix to a lovely film The Reluctant Infidel...I think this was what The Four Lions was supposed to be but failed. It is a very funny comedy that pokes gentle fun at all religions. A lovely Muslim chap discovers that he was adopted and is 'really' Jewish. The resulting mayhem is very funny. There are no suicide bombers, all sorts of stereotypes are debunked and it all ends happily. This I would recommend.

I got taken to see "Salt" when I was on holidays. Totally unbelievable, non stop action etc. Angelina Jolie is scarily thin which makes the premise of her playing a butt kicking secret agent totally unbelievable. Wait until it comes out on dvd.
Tickets were in "gold class" - eating pizza, sipping wine and nibbling on a platter was ok but not worth the cost of the evening.

At last...somebody out there in the wilderness who appreciates movies...Thank you Victoria! Your prize, should you chose to accept, is the company of my exceptional precence at your next movie going experience...I only require flights (business class), accomodation (5 star), meals (lots of them) and copious amounts of chocolate...

Recently, D#1 treated me to a Gold Class viewing of Tomorrow When the War Began. I had never gold classed before and thoroughly enjoyed being spoiled rotten.
The movie was as brilliant as the book, can't wait for the next one.

Hi Gail, I was remembering my childhood (a thousand years ago) and there was a series of books by Colin Thiele (?) with a similar scenario. They were riveting. I wonder how similar this series is to that old one?

This was from the seven part series by John Marsden, which also had a 3-part follow up series.
If you ever come up with the title of the Thiele series, I would be interested to know.

Missed you. Kids passing through moving to new locales on the West Coast. Nice to all be in one time zone again.
Finally have a movie to recommend: Get Him to the Greek. Russell Brand is a marvel as "the last rock star" whose last album, African Child, which he had predicted would, in the next century, be ranked with the best of the Beatles', was not merely panned by the critics, but described by Rolling Stone Magazine as the third worst thing to happen to Africa after famine and war. It's a baudy, rauncy, mildly gross-out road trip/buddy movie but it's also very smart and cares a lot about its characters. Strong cast, including a surprisingly funny Sean (P. Diddy) Combs playing, basically, himself, but not afraid of self-mockery. Worth seeing just for the mock-music videos. Much fun. (Trust me to recommend the movie that features Jonah Hill's bare bottom and at least five scenes with vomiting.)

Must learn to proof. "Raunchy."

Terry, have done something foolish....signed up for a charity fund-raiser and committed myself to watching Eat, Love, Pray with JR. AArrgghh, think of me on Oct 13, going beyond the call of duty, suffering myself for those in pain!!

Mary, are you reading my mind? I went back thru old posts and couldn't find that I mentioned I bought ELP to read after the move but couldn't get through the first chapter. She's very witty, but I can't handle someone else's spiritual journey since my spirituality is currently limited to spirits that are red and corked.

Hi all - especially Mary & Terry - I've been away for so long I've got pages and pages to catch up on, if I ever can.
But, I came to see if anyone had seen or had an opinion on 'Eat Pray Love' - which I saw today and thought it was completely ordinary (except for the scrummy food in Italy). I do admit to not having read the book yet, and I feel it probably has screeds more to offer but the film left me flat.
I should have taken notice of the reviews!
I will be interested to read others' opinions on it - it had been so hyped up in the media.
