NOW I have a question for you, I know Australia's major cities are around the coast, and then there is the great outback in the center. but WHY are there no cities up on the guof of fomething, dead center North coast? Looks like a lot of coastline that is vacant of towns up there. something wrong up there?

MizTricia, a huge part of this country is uninhabitable, usually because nothing can be grown there. There are only 20 million of us & the country is huge so our towns & cities are really widespread. I'm not sure about the Gulf of C. as haven't been there but I don't think it is very hospitable. Anyone else?

We can get quite Humid here in Perth, February and March ......not my favourite time of the year, along with the Hot Summers December - March/April..

the 2 flush buttons on the toilets, has been around for many many years, along with the smaller cisterns - (less litres per flush)....... got to conserve that precious commodity. Water..

I once watched a very long documentry about a train ride across Australia, most interesting, so very different from area to area, more than the USA even.

We don't do humid here in Canberra, but Sydney certainly does

I have only been west as far as Adelaide and we drove to Townsville in August last year, that is the furthest north I have been.

Kalleb was 2 weeks old when we left for our holiday last year, it's a LLLLLLLLLOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG drive to townsville

MizTricia, the train that goes from ?Adelaide to Perth is a fantastic experience. Miles & miles of nothing but desert & kangaroos - you can go hours without seeing a human or any civilisation outside of the train

IF we do not get rain soon, and catch up, some areas near us will be back on water rationing this summer. About 4 years ago, got so bad for a HUGE bedroom community of birmingham, they had water police checking use of =outside water. new construction went up, people moved in, with only bare earth, landscapers could not plant, because homeowners could not water.

Mickey, you drove from Melbourne to Townsville? How many days did it take you? I used to live in Townsville in the late 60's, early 70's. It has changed a huge amount since then. Now that was a HOT & Humid place - UNbearable

yes, that was it, Adelaid to perth, but they also went NORTH on a rail spur that was mostly unused, so got a bit of up there too. Little towns that were mostly stops and layovers for train going through, and many of those abandoned, cause not as many trains as before, Railroad being replaced by road trains? huge multi trailers behind a big tractor/truck?

We took our time, plus having to stop every 4 hours to feed Kalleb but from memory it took us about 4 days

MizTricia, most of Oz has been on water restrictions for quite awhile now.

From Perth to the West Aust/South Aust border is about 1000miles, and that's a third of the country

We drove cause it was cheaper to drive and take the camper, than it was to buy plane tickets for 2 adults and 5 kids then hire a car up there

Yes that's right MizTricia, mostly 'roadtrains' going from Adelaide to Darwin, via Alice Springs.
Mickey, you get to see alot of Oz driving that far!

The problem I mentioned is from too rapid building of homes, out building the infastruture. Now birmingham itself is in a huge bowl of a valley, and birmingham and north areas had water, but they had nothing linking that system to the south. Someone got out OLD maps, found where the closest pipes of the 2 systems were, and connected them together, the south area with no water was able to get water from the North of town, some rivers up there.
