Not today June, but did get some STUFF done. Even with my sometimes slow connection, I love that I can keep the wireless connection open all the time and come and go...

Heidi, it could just be that you've already slept a lot today....

If my connection gets fast again and I'm trying to avoid doing something else I'll see if I can do a 2nd post tally.... don't hold your breath though, there's a couple of 'ifs' in there!

I posted 10 photos of our side trip yesterday. Could not get them on last night as the wifi wouldn't allow it. I'm hard lined in this a.m. and they uploaded easily.

We drove out through Joseph (named after Chief Joseph - we are in an area where the Nez Perce, a band of a number of different tribes that were being scr*ewed over by the government traveled to winter) to Imnaha (about 30 miles east)

We then took a well maintained graded dirt road 24 miles up very steep terain and through beautiful woods and snow to Hat Point.

Hat Point is where a fire lookout stands above 7000' of elevation. It is open to the public to climb (but not all the way to the top) to see the vast views in all directions.

They say that on a clear day you can see 80 miles in all directions. There was a bit of haze (from smoke - burning fields) so we did not see quite that far!

As I mentioned yesterday - we were up there all by our lonesomes except for the one woman with the side arm. She was quite a character and told us about different families that had homesteaded below along the Snake river.

Yesterday was quite a day for seeing wild animals, too. We spotted a herd of rarely seen mountain goats while we visited on top of the world at Hat Point.

Hat Point was named because a cowboy (way back when) was bucked from his horse - losing his hat. The hat was later found by someone else and left hanging on a tree branch. The hat was never reclaimed and hung on the tree for over a year.

Getting back to Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce...they were orginally granted 7 million acres throughout the area from Glacier National park in eastern Idaho to the Wallowa mountain area in Oregon, where they "wintered" along the rivers.

Within a very short period of time the government reduced their acreage to 1 million and wanted to confine them to a reservation...of course, no where near the rivers.

They fought a number of brave battles all over this area and northeast into Washington and Idaho...doing well because of their astute cleverness and their great knowledge of the areas.

In the end they were forced into the reservation...and the rest is history.

Today, there are wonderful memorials and a detailed history of their journey and battles. Most of it takes place north of where we are visiting, so we did not get to go to those cultural centers.
