Maybe you could visit once she's home and settled in. Make a day of visiting with Brendan and your niece.

What brand of mayo do you use Ruby? The only kind I can tolerate is Helmann's. The rest are too sweet.

I've never had a raddish with salt. I'll have to try that. I used to take the tomatoes right off the vine and eat them like an apple when we had a little garden. We don't have the garden any more.

Dukes, Hellman's in a pinch. Do not come near me with Miracle Whip.

Other than the warm weather, it's the fresh tomatoes that I look forward to in the summer. We have 3 kinds this year.

Stella, have you tried a container garden?

I wonder what the baby is going to look like. My niece is very pale with light blonde hair. Her husband is from Panama and he is very dark. Next to each other they are light night and day.

Stella, you can tuck a couple of tomato vines in a sunny spot. You don't have to have a garden. Life is too short not to have a really good tomato.

Ruby, I've never heard of Duke's. Is it sold in any of the chain stores?

Dark seems to dominate. Brown eyes particularly.

Yes. They're very easy to take care of. Virtually no weeding and you can move them around if you want.

I guessed we stopped the garden because all of the fruit came ripe while we were away every year and we had to ask the neighbors to come take them so they didn't go to waste. And my fil used to bring us a bunch of plants they started in their garden but then they moved to N. Carolina.

Dukes is sold in all the stores here. Well, not the hardware store, but you know.

I have never heard of Duke's either.

If my sister can talk my niece into a baptism, then we'll probably be going to that in about a month. Then again, my sister never likes to interfere or rock the boat, so she probably won't say anything. My mom will though!

Stella, start the plants inside around mid winter, then move them outside after the last frost. That way they'll ripen earlier.

Stella, I take it that she's lapsed? It is a personal decision, though grandmas can get away with a lot more than moms.

Last year I started mine from seeds. Had a bumper crop. Time got away from me this year.

With my niece, I have a feeling that something must have happened. She was always the most devote amongst the girls. One day, she just stopped going to church. Nobody asked her why. Maybe they were afraid of the answer. When she was in college, she travelled all over the world by herself. I was always afraid something would happen to her. That's actually how she met her husband. He was her cab(boat) driver in Panama when she went there.

Ruby, if I ever get down into your neck of the woods again, I'll give Duke's a try.

I use Helmann's for sandwiches and Miracle Whip for potato and macaroni salad.

The Park's Seed Catalog comes out after Christmas. It's more precious than any book (other than the Bible, of course) around here. Go on-line and they'll send you one. Start your seeds indoors in February. Get large pots or buckets, fill with the best dirt you can get, provide drainage, buy Tomato Miracle Grow, and you're in business.

I'll have to remember that. It would be nice to have tomatoes again. I really miss the fresh warm tomatoes!

I bought a few heirloom tomatoes and used the seeds from them. I bought the other seeds.

My niece is a quirky kind of girl. She is brilliant too. She reminds me of the tv character "Monk." (I love that show.) For the baby shower, none of the baby clothes could have buttons or zippers. She doesn't like the feel of them or the sound of them. She also has a wicked sense of humor. The thank you note she sent me had me rotfl!

I planted two heirloom vines a few years back. Every bug and catapillar (sp) in South Carolina lit on them.

Don't blame her for not wanting buttons. Our one nephew liked to suck on them when he got older. Guess alot of what she got was either ties or snaps.

I lost the page and had to get back in the long way. When I refreshed, I got a white page. The gremlins must know that Gath is on vacation!

I had the same thing happen, too. Once a week I would mix a little dish soap in a bucket of water, load a spray bottle and give them a spritz. Got rid of the bugs.

I remember when she was a baby and my sister had the hardest time dressing her in anything. She was very picky even back then. It's funny how that happens sometimes.

Dish soap works on bugs!?! That's good to know! If I spray it on me, will it keep the mosquitoes away?

The heirlooms can be a pain. This year I mixed them in with the other tomato plants and haven't had a problem. My other problem was squirrels. Ended up hanging old CDs and putting pinwheels in the garden. They got even with me though. They've eaten almost all my squash I planted in front of the house.
