Etiquette question ....

Ally went to someone's home for singing last night. She and several much older girls were in a room with exercise equipment. The resident girls knew that kids were not allowed on the equipment, but kept that a secret and may have even encouraged the others to use it. Ally fell off the treadmill and put a hole in the wall. It was an accident and she was apparently very upset and embarrassed. Because of that the girls all decided that they wouldn't tell their mother until today so Ally didn't have to be embarrassed. This even though questions were asked about the source of the banging noise. One of the girls was 19 years old, others 16 to 17, Ally is 12.

Ally has been told that she did the wrong thing not admitting to the accident and the damage and has apologised to the mother who was lied to last night. (Crying while she did it, but done).

Finally the question - should I offer to pay for the damage?

Suzy, it's a good thing that Ally apologized! As a matter of principle, she also should offer to pay for damage repair (while hoping that the offer isn't accepted). It's a tough lesson to learn. It's too bad the parents didn't explain ground rules before the girls had an opportunity to try out the exercise equipment.

The painting could be much worse than the hole. Generally they are easily repaired.

Don't know Ruby. There are 2 reasons I asked, actually 3. The first is that someone said no, the second was that it was emphasized to me that it wasn't Ally's fault, and the third is that no one has ever paid for damage done to my house or stuff, and I didn't really expect them to. But I felt like you that I really should.

You should offer. Hopefully the woman will graciously let you off the hook. How could it not be Ally's fault? Permission or not, she got on the machine and fell into the wall.

The owner should take her kids to task, but nothing changes the fact that Ally made the hole. You still should offer. She should decline.

Suzy, if I was in the same position, I would insist on paying for the damage, and I'd just wear the cost in the interests of harmony. I wouldn't expect my child to (assuming Ally has no money of her own at her age). If I was the owner of the house, I would expect the parents to offer to pay, but I wouldn't accept the money. If the parents are handy, it shouldn't cost too much, but I'm afraid you could be up for hundreds of $ if they aren't. The hole will have to be mended, then bogged up several times over a few days, before it's painted. Every house call by a tradesman costs at least $80 I would think. Their house insurance should cover it though, and maybe they would just want the excess. Poor Ally. I don't blame her for not owning up to it last night. It would've been a very hard thing for a child to do. Pity we don't live near you, hubby could fix it for the cost of the paint.

I was told last night I was greedy so have watched off and on today but declined to try for any TOPPs.
We changed a 'button down the front blouse' I bought Sharon during the week (for a larger size) and Sharon got some sudoku books as she will be away from the computer for most of next week.
Laura got some bubble detergent so we can blow bubbles at grandmas house.
We then picked some pink cherry blossom and whits snowballs from grandmas garden to take home. (And one special rose bud)

Oh, and the daughters of the house should definitely be taken to task by their parents for not stopping Ally from using the equipment. On second thoughts, they should be offering to contribute towards the cost of the repairs. Now that I think about it some more, I assume the parents knew the girls were in the room. It was up to them to tell Ally that the equipment wasn't to be used.

Suzy I do not think it was totally Ally's fault but if your hubby is any good at patching walls why not have him offer to do the repairs. If they decline it is then out of your hands.
But it must have been a fairly flimsy wall unless it was the equipment that went through the wall.
I woukd not expect anyone to pay if it was my wall.

Suzy, how did the Mother react when Ally saw her today? It may give you a clue how best to approach the subject with her.
