Catherine, Welcome, or should I say, bon jour. Ok, I've used up my French. Except for my favorite French, Menage a Trois. NOT WHAT YOU THINK!!!!! It is a nice wine from the FOLIE A DEUX winery in Napa valley in California. I would not think to insult a Frenchwoman by leaving a bottle of American wine! Rather, here are some Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory truffles! Enjoy!

catherine, I posted some information about Redwood trees and burls on my page in answer to questions from Liz. I'll paste those same answers here for you. I love your picture. What a great dog.

Liz, after the holiday season, I'm going to post some pics about Redwoods. They are native to the coastal region in the northwestern US. They live to over 1000 years old, can be over 300 feet tall, with a trunk 15-20 feet in diameter. Sadly, most of the redwood giants have been logged, there are few left. The burl is a tourist purchase to take home and grow.

Liz, I wanted to expand on what I was telling about redwood trees. I've put some pictures of the redwood tree in my back yard on my flickr site. I don't know how old it is, but it is still a baby, probably less than 100 years old. The trunk has a circumfrence of ll feet 6 inches 4 feet above ground level. At that height, the trunk looks to be about 4 feet diameter. I found a site where you could buy one of the burls I've been handing out to people on their home pages. It is:

Catherine, Thank you for your visit. I had the opportunity to review all of the pictures on your flickr site. They are captivating. You have the ability to take the common place and make it appear as something that is unique! Oh yes, your English is far better than my French.

catherine, it dawned on me I didn't answer the only question you asked, that being what is a burl? A burl is a growth sort of like a tumor a tree produces to cover over an injury. The wood is prized by carvers and turners for it's beauty since any grain goes every which way. Redwood burls throw out sprouts and are cut into small pieces and sold as novelty items for tourists to take home and grow.

Hi Catherine. If you go into Update details on your Supporting Member page, one of the options you have is to create an avatar. When you open the avatar feature, you get these instructions:

Submit Avatar
You can have an Avatar (image) appear next to all of your posts.
Avatars must be:
File size must be under 5kb
The image must be in .JPG or .GIF format (not an animated gif)
The image must be 50 pixels by 50 pixels. Many programs can resize images, a great free one is ACDSEE
Any avatars judged objectionable will not be allowed.
Once you upload your avatar, it will be pending until staff approve it (typically 12-24 hours). There will be a 'avatar pending' message on your user details page. Once it is approved, your avatar will automatically be used in your posts. If it is not approved (unlikely) then it will be deleted and you will have a 'no avatars pending' message on your user details page.
Enter the location of the image which wil be your avatar.

The site I use for creating an avatar is at the following link:

Hope that helps.

Hello Catherine,

I just took a tour of your photos, loved them all. I especially liked the orange and black beetles, the Christmas market looks simular to the ones in Germany I went to. The pictures of Notre Dame brought back good memories, was there in January, I loved Paris. We also went to Mont Saint Michel it was lovely also. Enjoyed our two weeks in France. This was my third trip to France, love your country.
