That's one BIG bird! We often hear the pileateds hammering away at the dead trees near our place in WV -- they ARE impressive! He's so big that the tail prop doesn't work very well!

Kind of like our acorn woodpecker. Ours has the red cap too but is whiter in the face. It pecks holes into the trees and places an acorn in the hole, hence the name.
