Thanks, Nola! I've been on and off this site as time permits, but stopped posting when I had to register. But now I'm back and enjoying it -- but it's sure easy to spend too much time here! But fun to see the puzzles and read the comments! -Cyn

Thanks for the welcoming reception! I've enjoyed this site, though I mostly do the jigsaw puzzles. But when no one else identified the earthstar mushrooms, I just wanted to share that. I've found an amazing world in mushrooms, from tiny to giant, from dull brown to brilliant red, to green, to purple, etc., and all kinds of fantastic shapes. So it's been fun seeing them as the photos lately on the jigsaw site! Nice to meet you all! -Cyn

Cyn, drop over to my place and check out the pics I have of fungi on my block. Many weird and wonderful ones, but none like that one on yesterday's jigsaw! So that's what it is called.

Hi, Gail! You DO have some cool fungi! I imagine yours are a lot different from ours here in the States. A few weeks ago I found a "fairy fan", which is tiny (maybe a centimeter) and flattened like a fan! Quite cute! But you have to look VERY carefully to find such small ones -- almost find them by accident and luck!
I'm just getting the hang of commenting to people (rather than to all), so I hope this gets back to you! -Cyn

Cyn, if you click on FORUMS at top of page, then find " questions about this site" and something about Members special information, I forget just exact name, there are some things listed there. Like how to make avatars I know. You can always just drop into EASY comments and ask, or come on over to SA6 page http://sudoku.com.au/QXW30-7-1991-236-Sudokuaholics-Anonymous-.aspx
you can find some helpful people who will answer any questions you have. I would suggest just looking around, pushing buttons, seeing what you find, it is all a lot of fun.

Hello TerrierCyn - I was interested in where you are picking up your knowledge of mushrooms - I, too, find them fascinating! I know I have bunches on my mountain (I live on the flanks of a small mountain overlooking an intermittent stream, so there is much diversity on my property), including the spring edible chanterelles (correct? - I don't even know what they look like, the locals trespass to collect them as soon as they appear), and a truly weird black one that opens to a horrendously homely (o.k., o.k., I shouldn't judge the poor guys!) flower-looking thing, large, with a bulbous center and the "petals" reflexed away from the center - tried to photograph it but botched the pictures. I am just getting used to digital, so didn't get the exposures right. Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say howdy!

Hey Cyn! Darn, no it didn't make it (and I didn't get a message on e-mail either - I have it set up that a copy of the message shows there as well)! I am sorry as I find your knowledge about these curious plants fascinating, and would have loved to get the message. When I get time (after a long report I must finish, hopefully in the next couple of weeks) I plan to review my slides and copy them to the computer, and then put them in my gallery. I have tons of plant photos (photography has been a passion for years) and I have begun making large prints to hang up in various portions of my house. In my hall, for example, I have a long narrow board extending down one wall at slightly abouve my height, and I screw in eye hooks on the top edge and hang photos and pictures from those - so I can change things to my heart;s content with messing up the wall itself. Clever, huh!!!!? My friends are beginning to copy this brilliant but simple device, I am flattered! I must laugh at myself in my computer ignorance (such as the giant photos in my gallery), I have a huge photo of the fritilaria I used for the avatar, so to me it's weird as the real thing is so small - but it makes a great visual statement!
If you have time and patience could you resend the mushroom bit? Pretty please?
How's the weather there - we're getting rain which we need badly, but winter is creeping in steadily. I went through Johnson City, years ago, when my husband and I used to drive to Florida to see his family and we avoided the interstate as much as possible. My brother lived in Oak Ridge for a while years ago, and I find TN to be a lovely state, what I've seen of it at least.

Hey again, Cyn! Thank you so much for going through that again! I am in the Eastern Panhandle, just west of Martinsburg, about 25 minutes from anywhere. I have a Hedgesville address, but am 17 miles from there. I have 30 acres, 26 of which are wooded and 4 which I leave as an open field. I haven't tried rock climbing, so I am impressed! 61 is nothing much, just keep doing the stuff you want to do until you can't, then slow down somewhat - my life motto. When I turned 50 15 years ago, "friends" told me I couldn't do things like help with the Audubon birdseed sale because of the weight of the bags - I responded that if I "couldn't" do it, why did I find it to be not so difficult? Last spring I carried however many 40 lb bags of wood pellets are in a ton down the hill to my basement in a wheelbarrow, then carried them inside and stacked them - in two days (Hey, after all, it looked like rain was on the way!). My contractor was astonished when he came to help (he had brought them in his truck for me, and I helped unload them to the front of my house) and it was all done.
I used to do a lot of wildflower identifying - Bill and I even went on two botanical trips with the Philadelphia group, one to Switzerland, one to the Canary Islands - and I almost always try to have books on local flora when I can (like in So. Italy and in France where I worked as a volunteer), so I am concerned because I cannot recall Latin names any more as I haven't practiced in years, so I'm relearning again - just for fun! O.K., so I'm a touch obsessive! But it's neat to know what you are looking at.

Me again. Thought I might get cut off (I blather a lot - try to be short and to the point but ...........). With the photos, I use photoshop, keep saving them as smaller jpgs, then reduce their size - but as you can see, I messed up still - Abby looks like a life-size mountain lion! And that's a second reduction! So I haven't mastered this either, but the smaller I make them, the better they work for the gallery. Haven't attempted a puzzle candidate as yet. But I'm getting there! Angie has recommended some websites that will reduce one's photos - I did that for the avatar after three weeks of bungling about the internet landscape, metaphorically speaking, and I made it in one ten minute try! Yay - I'm learning, thanks to Angie, Ian and other folks who freely give advice to us technologically challenged folks! Because I have no memory nor do I have a tidy worktable, I'll search out where I have the various instructions and get back to you.

Here is the info: Go to "Forum" at the top of this page, then look under Questions about this site and choose "Members Special Features - Help and Info" and presto! - three pages of advice from caring and savvy folks! For example, Broni, on page 2, discusses a way to shrink pictures.
Neat, huh?! It's nice to know that it's not necessary to import a young child to explain all this stuff to you, that we have helpers right on this site!
Good luck!

Hey Cyn - part of your post got cut off - but I do so agree with you on all that you said! And not only the body needs to keep forging along, also the mind. My x-sister-in-law told me one time that she admired me because I was so brave to try to learn another language AT MY AGE - wow. I replied simply that I am very lucky, I have different priorities now and different reasons for learning, so actually am much more efficient doing it (Italian was the issue). I am glad you are setting a good example for the "kids" - I was appalled this year when some of my students balked at carrying the dirt in the wheelbarrow on site (archeology), showed them how to use it, then put on my knee brace (my knee had gone out on me for a week or so during the class) and wheeled away the dirt to the dump pile (in a bit of a fury at their wimpiness - they had depended on their loks to get guys to haul the dirt up to that point!). I am always pleased when I see young folks out doing outdoor stuff - too many consider fingers on a keyboard as their daily exercise, I'm afraid.
About West Virginia - amazing how BIG it is, from one corner to another! Had to drive to Huntington for a meeting - six hours one-way! But a lovely drive (except too much interstate driving to get there and back in a reasonable amount of time - did stay the night, though).
Seeing CynB's name and question - why are you "Terrier"Cyn? Just curious.

Hi, Cyn - thanks for the stories of your rock climbing surprises! My Dad used to rock climb in his youth, and told me of raising up above a ledge to confront a "puff adder" - Daddy didn't know he was gazing at the Hog Nose snake going through his bluff routine, and just about fell back on his buddies. Fortunately he didn't do really high climbs, but still ...........!!! Bats won't hurt you - we had them in our office building (our company rented it from us, it was an old house that came complete with a zillion bats in the attic) and I was elected to catch them when they ventured down into our office space. Poor little things - they were so scared! I kept a coffee can and piece of cardboard to catch them (a real high tech office) and released them outside. A young boy, aged 11, came one day to ask if I would show him the bats - he reached behind the roof supports and pulled them out, he was interested in sexing them and showed me how - no, I did not take notes! - and told me he had his own non-profit bat organization. He was a knowledgeable little fellow, I must say - have wondered what he grew up to be! It was quite a job getting the bats out - we used a live capture company, and they got hundreds of the little guys out and still didn't succeed in clearing out the attic by the time I sold the building after my husband's death. So bats rather fascinate me, as you can tell by my tale.

We (and I'm sure you) are having January weather here -- should be in the upper 50's, but we won't be out of the 40's until some time next week! Not very nice for my sister who is visiting from Cleveland -- though we ARE warmer than Cleveland, where they have snow!

My gosh, are you ever multi-talented! I love the idea of your poems - will start collecting them from the site! I just figured out copying and pasting into a document - necessary because I need to keep things straight about what I talk about to whom and when on this site (memory is a thing of the past!).
We are having weather, all kinds of it! The snow - only a dribble, but it froze - is pretty much gone, with promises of flurries to come though. I need to plant those fool grape hyacinth bulbs that I bought in a wave of creative garden enthusiasm, and to take in now-frozen pots of annuals - you probably know the drill, emptying the pots into the compost and cleaning the pots - too cold to do now! Also the deck furniture needs to be dealt with and on and on and I'm cold! We shall reach the 40's this coming week, so maybe I can rush around before company arrives for Thanksgiving and clear the deck and otherwise tidy up the house as well. Need to make sleeping space - many of my friends don't drive at night, and holiday meals here (started when my husband was alive and carried out for many, many years) go on for hours - talking, eating, drinking, talking, music - real holiday "festas"! Years ago one gathering went on so long that, first, my husband went to bed (he had been battling lung cancer at that time), then I faded, having been up since 5:00 a.m. to prepare the food, and the guests, I found out later, all left at 4:00 a.m. One woman said she hadn't had such a delightful festive evening since she moved here from Europe - all of us sitting at the table talking and laughing all the night long!
Must quit before I am shut off!

Oh, I'm getting soooo clever (dance, dance)!! When someone accepts being a friend, the name and address go into your "Friends" thingie up on the top right of your page - then you can write to them without searching like mad to find an address for them to go to their box so's you can write. Pretty complicated, but it's working! I have people's addresses written down, but have no other way to address a message to them than to search out their comments and do the "Check out my page" route. This website baffles me a lot! If only I were a bit more computer savvy .............

Good morning, Cyn! I made cranberry sauce and will take wine as well to a neighbor's "Thanksgiving" this afternoon - she and her husband are off to Florida in their RV on Wednesday (he wants two days of hunting before they go) - so the holiday festivities are beginning - and my house is a wreck! Oh well - hopefully I'll get the extra bed out before all the overnighters get here. Never did get those little bulbs in the ground - maybe it will warm up enough today or tomorrow and I can do it (wearing my orange hat and vest tomorrow - hunting season begins). I am beginning to get in a holiday mood - if only one of Santa's elves would drop in and help me clean and carry stuff down to the newly finished basement to make room for guests! I'm almost wishing I were going to Florida (my brother lives in Punta Gorda) but here I am, in cold WV! Ah well, it's my choice, and I do love it when it snows!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Hey, Ms Terrier -
I actually return to the puzzles after I've done them and shut down the site so I can see if you've written a poem that day! Yesterday's poem is a gem!
Did you see Jupiter and Venus last night - here it was so clear and cold and dark that the crescent moon and the planets glittered!!! I was walking Sandy, after waving goodbye to a friend (we went to see "Australia" in the afternoon), and was literally stopped in my tracks by the moon - then, through the trees, I saw the planets! What a gift! I wasn't dressed for simply standing there to ogle the sight for too long - besides, Sandy wanter her supper - and I thought of the night I stood in the snow to watch an eclipse. I am so lucky to be far from city lights, and to be able to stand in the woods, free of human noise, and have these moments!

Good morning, Cyn -
Saw the moon and planets again last night, still beautifully bright! I thought to have those lights here in never-never land, but opted for darkness - and now I'm glad! Last night, though, I was in the kitchen and glanced outside and saw a small light whiz by! I was panicked for a moment, then realized the deck floodlights were on and what I most likely saw was a deer sneaking down to below the deck where I put out corn and peanuts for the squirrels! One bright deer eye - but it startled me! I didn't want to scare it, so I didn't turn on the light under the deck when I snuck down to see if I could see her. Sometimes, when you live alone, you get spooked too easily - like when the wind blows and my motion detector lights on the front patio keep going on and off. Doesn't bother me now, but for a while it did!

Hey Cyn!
I hope this will make a page two for you! I know what you mean about security - when we bought here in Berkeley County, it was still "rustic" - with lots of local folk out of work who developed a robbery circuit. Our friends got hit, so we installed a security system when they did and within three weeks it thwarted a robbery! The guys got caught when, the second year, they made the same circuit and were seen - they weren't real bright! But now we have a lot more development, and robberies apparently are more common - glad my home looks like a small cabin, but I do set the alarm when I go away. Other houses in the area look far more prosperous, I must say! But, for sure, when I lose Sandy I shall get another big dog, hopefully a loud one. Sandy, in spite of her arthritis, still enjoys a good barking session periodically on the deck, and I encourage this! She has a wonderful, deep throated bark that sounds ominous (my gimpy yellow lab mix!). so I figure she lets the neighborhood know she's still in charge. There were no dogs here the time someone tried to break in, and when I go away for the night or weekend or whatever, I now have a babysitter stay up here with the beasties - this is what gave me the freedom to go to Italy for two months for the last five years, having the fine babysitter.
I pick up trash along the road as well (one of my nearest neighbors is a primary offender in the trash-hurling department), but don't have a sign to announce my efforts as yet - one day I'll get one, maybe. I just hate to see it! But, after 19 years here, I still am an outsider, with only a few friends locally. Oh, well. The deer, birds, etc. love me!

Hi Cyn,
Thank you for your nice comments about my photos. Do you realise that I had to rush to the dictionary to look up the meaning of the word 'eclectic' and I find it is quite complimentary. Thank you.
I try to keep the photos varied and have some more to contribute after our recent trip. I will post them as soon as I can find a moment in this hectic time as Christmas approaches.
May I wish you and your family a joyous Festive Season and I hope that the New Year brings you good health and happiness.

What me, sadistic, never! I do confess to submitting a few fairly challenging jigsaw photos from time to time but why make it easy, jigsaws are supposed to be a bit intellectually challenging, aren't they?
I look forward to seeing your photos appear on site. I used to think I knew the system but things seem to have changed lately so you never know what is going to appear where now. And I think I like it that way.
I have a few more photos in preparation which I will try to submit before Christmas.
