Jaz - I have a friend seeing it this weekend in Melbourne - would it be too late to get her feedback on Sunday/Monday??

Jaz, I saw it about 4 or 5 years ago and enjoyed it very much. True it was dark....but it certainly wasn't boring. Those around me also enjoyed it. Since the production I saw was so long ago, I hesitate to say if you'd be wasting money or not, but the story line would be the same I'd imangine. Let me know what decision you make.

Just thought I'd include a comment from a German friend who saw The lives of Others:
...I found the translations from German into English to be fairly poor.I felt that some of the emotion had been removed through the translations.

Went to 'Paris je t'aime' yesterday with my mum - really good. Nice to see and hear some French again but also it was a good movie. and quite educational in parts! (my 86 y.o. mum found it even more so...)

Billy, so the movie would have been even more powerful in German? Would have been weeping buckets then!!!
Typical! one weekend I go away and a whole pile of movies I want to see come on! Anyone got any feedback on Science of Sleep, History Boys, Half Nelson and Noise?
Loza, thanx, will try to take my mum to see Paris

History Boys interesting. It felt very much like a play (which it was), but I didn't mind that. Liked it, but wouldn't spend my last $15 on it.

Mary - no feedback on those movies and I'm not sure if I'm going to get time to see any for the next month or so...

Jaz - Miss Saigon got the thumbs up but her hubby fell asleep...she didn't find it depressing.

We just returned from seeing Spiderman 3. Fun movie, great special effects, all that ... but that is not what I want to tell you! As Spidey swings in for his climactic battle, you should zero in on the center of the crowd scene (which is shown twice) ... there is a lady who looks just like our very own BILLY! No kidding! When you see the movie, look for her!

Enjoyed Noise, a good Aussie film. Not action-packed but good characters and good acting. The ending was....different.

Gosh, this is getting embarrassing...someone else report on a movie... please. Saw As it is in Heaven with my Mum. It had every stereotype and clichéd situation you could name and the story was an old familiar one, but it worked! Nice movie!

Mary - absolutely loved History Boys. I didn't realise that it was an Alan Bennett play. I enjoy most genres, but this really hit the spot for me and I would quite readily see it again...it won't be everyone's cup of char...9/10

Hi Billy, I'm showing my age here but I remember when the ABC used to programme an Alan Bennett play every Xmas season...at least there was ONE watchable show over the holidays

billy.. just saw your preview for the Order of the Phoenix (and yes, will be lining up for it!). But was surprised by who you found annoying - to me, it's Ron - or the actor who plays Ron. He has one of the three facial expressions that he can do on his face at any one time - no expression, shocked and even more shocked.

Saw a review for the third Shrek movie - said that the whole concept was now rather passe (am seriously hoping that it was a very jaded critic and not the case!)

Emels - I thought the 3 of them all have the same scope of facial expressions...
Harry - sad expression, poor me expression, slightly peeved expression...

Hermione - annoyed expression, even more annoyed expression, and don't p*** me off Ron and Harry expression...

It would be a shame if the Shrek movie falls below par...Bec saw Pirates of...and loved it. I am not so keen to see it after the abysmal attempt at the 2nd one...

Hi y'all
I just wanted to report that I have seen 'Waitress', and enjoyed it very very much. I would give it 9/10. Has anyone else seen it?
Haven't seen much else lately...does anyone have an opinion on 'Mr. Brooks'?

Anyone heard of Breach?

Susan I haven't heard of Waitress or Mr Brooks either, most probably on their way... I've seen Breach advertised Mary but haven't heard anything about it. I may catch Romulus, My Father this weekend, wouldn't mind seeing Driving Lessons and Zodiac.

I've heard Zodiac is good but gruesome so I'll be giving it a miss. Romulus is reported to be excellent and I've heard mixed reviews of Driving Lessons. There doesn't seem to be anything riveting around at the moment...gone from too many(can there be?) excellent choices to too few. School holidays approaching?

I'm really annoyed about the movie The Dead Girl...it purports to be a psychological, character- driven investigation into the lives of some people directly affected by the murder of a girl,( sounds great..yes I would see it) so WHY do they feel the need to wallow in the squalor of showing the sicko serial killer going about his business? (no I would not see it even if you paid me!)A quality movie can leave things to the imagination. Less is more?

Mary - have not heard of The Dead Girl - but I do agree, a good film, if directed well, esp with regards to horror/thrillers, has more to do with what is implied rather than what is shown...

Ended up seeing Oceans 13 - ho hum, not my choice, but was OK. Don't knock yourself out to see it, there are a few goodies out there that I'll be attempting to see next weekend...

The Black Book looks interesting....has the spunk from The Lives of Others in it. Not that I am swayed by such trivial concerns

Clubland - twas ok, was surprised to hear that Brenda Blethyn agreed to do this film, but apparently the role was written with her in mind.

HP&tootP - loved it!! Margaret and David (oz film critics) said that much of the 'charm' had gone from this film which the other films had...I think it has been replaced by a certain edge/grittiness. Not a flick for young kids in my opinion...would love to see jason isaacs do more - he has such screen presence...9/10 (but then I am biased). Was with daughter no.2 who was watching it for a 3rd time! She is seeing it again tomorrow....

I guess that as HP grows up the charm had better be replaced by something else.Twee teenagers are just too annoying.I've heard it's very good, so the transition was obviously a success.

Just got back from Romulus, My Father...don't go if you want something light and fluffy - I have a headache from crying, I found it quite depressing and sad. Eric Bana was good, but the little boy who played his son was superb. 8/10

Check out this movie review website of a friend of a friend from New York. I think this woman LIVES in a movie theater! I tend to agree with her critiques far more than I disagree, so I always check her reviews before I spend my hard-earned money at the box office. http://judithwolfe.com/lobosmoviereviews/

Has anybody here watched the DVD 'An Inconvenient Truth'? Or, for those in the USA, gone to one of Al Gore's slideshows on the subject? Rick and I watched it last night and can't believe that he was beaten (although controversially) in the election between himself and Bush. Here, in Australia, we don't hear much about the candidates that run for presidency or their policies but if Al Gore was using this stance then I cant believe he didn't win. I also cant believe that the Bush Administration did their best to try to cover up this information on Global Warming by saying that it is all scare tactics and that Al Gore was irresponsible in putting out to the people these facts. The Earth is in big trouble which means 'WE' are in big trouble. We have all got to forget about the mighty dollar and go back to basics if we want to live long, healthy lives and leave nature's beauty to our children and grandchildren.

Deb - yes, saw the doco when it first came out. What impressed me most was that Gore had been an advocate for 'change' way back when...what a great spokesperson for championing the cause on how we need to change - i just wish more leaders would listen...

I saw a movie! In fact, I saw two movies!! OK, they were on DVD and therefore fairly old but I got so excited that I am writing a review of them! The first one was Flushed Away but the makers of Wallace and Gromit. It's so bad that it's great! Lots of giggles and I'm pretty sure that it has references to lots of movies that I know nothing about. The slugs are great! The second was Made in Heaven (or something like that) - it has Reese Witherspoon who has been in some good (and some terrible) movies. Only for those into chick flicks. Yee hah! I got to contribute to this page though

Well em - makers of W & G always get the thumbs up...and I haven't seen Made in Heaven....but as we're talking old films here I saw The Constant Gardener the other night, a good film, albeit somewhat depressing, but glad i saw it. 8/10

Loved the book TCG and thought the film was probably as good a film as was possible to make given the constraints of the medium. The strength of the book to me lay in the inner changes of the leading man which are difficult to reproduce on film. Also a tad too much info on the evil BigPharma.
