My mom had a good answer for I'm bored. Helping her with housework. I don't remember ever telling her I was bored.

It was supposed to rain all weekend here but it has only sprinkled a bit today. We are desperate for rain. Our dams are only thirty something % full. Leading up to summer, that is nowhere near enough because we have a very low summer rainfall.

Gail, it seems y'all are on water restriction all the time. Do people out of the city have wells?

The farm properties have dams and I think a lot of them have bore water. Where I lived in Sth. Aust. all the homes had rainwater tanks because our town was not connected to mains water. We are seriously thinking about getting in tanks because if the drought continues, we will be in dire straights!

Hello, Rena and Gail. MizT's menu sounded so good I contemplated going down there. It sounded near Atlanta. Of course, no one wants to go through Atlanta. The traffic is so bad, God won't even go.

The restrictions have certainly made a lot of people realise just how much valuable drinking water goes down the drain. It got to the point where all fountains were turned off. Pools and spas were not allowed to be filled or you had to buy in tanker loads of water from areas that were not so affected.

Quite often they have water restrictions here, also. They don't affect me because we have wells and a small reservoir for irrigation.

RUBY, I am sure Joann will have gravey to go with her chicken and dressing. Being a good ole country gal she usually does! Huumm, need biscuits to go with the gravy, but not this time! Tanya did buy some grits (my sister does not make them , she is allergic to corn) For Ian's breakfast hehehe We have to educate this boy!!

Gail, I presume you have mains water now. When people catch rain in tanks, do they drink it? Do they have a purification means? How do they bathe? How big and how many tanks would you want?

As long as its on a plate, I think that would qualify!
I was always told to bring something so I always arrive with a bottle of bubbly. Much easier than bringing a plate.

Grits are made from bleached, coursely ground dried corn. It can be a cereal at breakfast, or a "starch" at a main meal. It really expands when added to boiling water, and sets up like concrete if you leave a bit in the bottom of a pan hehehe. You learn early to put the grits pan into water fore it dries. It is very filling and realatively cheap.

Yes Ruby. Were we live now, we are on mains water.
When we first moved to where we only had tank water, it took us a while to get used to it, but it wasn't too hard because the water quality in Adelaide was never that good anyway. No purification was necessary, although every few years, it was advisable to drain your tanks and have them cleaned. When we get tanks, we will buy the slimline modular style and have them under the house along the front that can be seen in the pic on my page. Not sure of the total capacity we're looking at holding. Gives me something to research .

Atlanta traffic is bad, but Tanya tells me Suthern CA traffic is worse! I have to remind her when here to slow down and leave a little space between cars, go back to Alabama driving mode. she says Atlanta is a piece of cake after LA.

Grits, Gail, are dried, ground corn. It's coarser than corn meal, and we eat them like Yankees eat cream of wheat or everybody eats oatmeal. They are very similar (identical to) the polenta you hear about on cooking shows.

GAIL, I think that is a good place for your tanks! for years, the state of florida survived with only tanks, called cisterns there, for thier water supply, and I am talking luxuary houses in Miami and other resort towns even. They made thiers of concrete and buried or half buried them in the sand.

Was going to ask if it was like polenta. Thank you MizT and Ruby for those explanations. Can you make it up and then bake it and cut it up like you can with polenta?

YES, they are the leaves of turnips, and they are first washed and washed to get out the sand and grit, then they are boiled. I like mine served with "Pepper sauce" the juice that jalapino peppers are preserved in. They are much like spinich, but more texture and milder taste,

RUBY, grits and cornbread AND turnip greens! In alabama you can grow turnip greens in late summer , fall and on through spring, when not much else will grow. You can eat harvest and eat them quickly, not waiting for the tubors to make turnips. Traditional way to hserve was with a goodly portion of bacon grease for seasoning. Added some flavor and some calories to the diet. bacon was another staple for settlers, cause it kept well.

You can cut it up like polenta, but it turns into a brick fairly quickly.

Gail, yes, it was often made up and sliced for a dinner food, with cheese . Or batter and fry it! Southerners will fry anything! Another use for that bacon grease.

The same here MizT. Our neighbour had a concrete tank put in when she built her place in Sth. Aus. I think it was a 10,000 gallon tank. We also have plastis ones and corrugated steel tanks.
ps Sorry for the delay posting, D#1 rang up with car battery queries!

I presume your gutters run into your water tanks and that it's pressurized somehow to run up into the faucets. How about bathing nightly? Do people buy bottled water to drink?

When I moved up, we put in a plastic tank because the one well had to supply two households and it isn't very big.
