RUBY I am told many toilets in OZ have 2 buttons for flushing. One when not much water is needed and the other when max flushing needed. Saves a lot of water!

No, we drink the tank water. Our tanks were all connected to each other, with a pump that allowed us to move the water from the roof catchment tanks to tanks higher on the property. The header pressure was ok for us because our property was quite steep but the pump was more than enough to give us equivalent to mains pressure. We didn't have much total capacity so we learnt to be frugal. The bath water went into the washing machine or onto the vegie patch and garden and the toilet wasn't flushed until absolutely necessary!!!

Ok, what are collards?! Was going to ask that but wasn't sure of the spelling and didn't want to look like a dunce! I think I would have spelled it collared!

It was brought in as legislation in Vic, many years ago, that all new houses had to be installed with the dual flush toilets. It was even recommended that the 'old' style toilets have their water consumption reduced by placing a brick in the cistern to take up some of the room!

aka collard greens, another very healthy green veggie from the cabbage family. Stronger tasting than turnip greens, at least to me.

YEP, we had the brink in the toilet when first introduced the low flush toilets. they also suggested a quart or half gallon plastic milk bottle full of water, people had milk bottles when they did not have a brick.

We have a 2 level flush toilet now, touch and release for half the water, or double flush it quickly if you need more power in yur flush.

Yep, the plastic bottle of water is also a good alternative to a brick.

It was a good experience for the kids to grow up learning about how easy it is to waste water. They are all quite conscious of it. When we are running the water to get it hot, we use a bucket to catch the warming water and then it gets put onto the plants or I catch it in a saucepan or the kettle for later use. Otherwise, we would lose about half a bucket each time we want to run hot water.

Collards are a green leaf that looks like turnip greens, but grow on a 2-3 foot stalk that has no edible root bulb. They are prepared the same way as turnip greens. Wash, wash, wash again to get the sand out. Chop them up and put them in a dutch oven with some form of oil in the bottom. Stir and put the lid on. In a little while they will have sweated out to nothing. Add more. Repeat two or three more times. Simmer a long time.

Rena, I ahve to ask! Why does your toilet tank have a Styrofoan liner? Is it to take up some of the water capacity room?

It's not good to waste water, but we seemingly have all we want here. Even when we have our summer dry spells, no restrictions are put on our water usage. When I was a kid, we had a spring, and that was the best tasting water in the world.

Rena, it's hard to believe that right next to that big lake you don't have all the well water you want. Oh, well, that's the way it goes.

Ruby I know what you mean. Our wells are on springs and I hate water from anywhere else.

It has become a serious issue here, Ruby. During summer, some people would hose down their driveways instead of sweeping them! Now we are asked to dob such practices in to the auths. Some people have even had their water reduced to a trickle for a period of time as the consequence of water 'stealing'.

The house has finished shaking which means the washing machine has finished! Another load to hang out. BTW The water from the rinse cycle drains into a couple of bins we have set up and that is what we use to water the pot plants with!
Be back in ten minutes...again!

The town of Christina Lake has it's own water supply. I think it is a reservoir. Sometimes it gets low in the summer. Our property has it's own water supply. We are 6 miles up the mountain road from the town.
