Hi all, its been awhile since I've stopped in, but just got something faster than dial up, so perhaps I'll check it out more often. Its nice to see the old familiar 'faces' lol. This site has sure had its fair share of 'upgrades' since the beginning, not quite as a local pub feel to it anymore. Oh well, nothing stays the same

Bingo, ceecee, spot on, I think you've got it! Local pub feeling is exactly what it was. Now, what is needed is a description of what the current feeling is all about. Anybody want to throw in on that one? I sure don't have a clue. It certainly isn't what a lot of people who have disappeared are interested in.

Before I hit the books I'll try to describe my 'current feeling' to you jebbles, but first let me insert my fruit knife into the socket (240v) to lend some credibility to my musings lest it be said I don't take things too seriously...it's a bit like going to a party that you've committed to, knowing that to make conversation is going to take some effort, when really it should be effortless...
A friend told me that when the rugby world cup was being held in Oz 2003 a website flourished, connections made, wit and humour sustained it...and then it was over, people moved on with their lives, but while it lasted it was magical...sudoku was popularised world-wide in 2005 and we were caught up in the fad/frenzy when it took off - it was magical...this site has offered up priceless nuggets and gems in my life that I could never have imagined...but life, in its inexorable way, moves on...enough already, my hair is suitably frizzed, I'm fully charged and now I have to peel a grape with my sturdy sgian dubh...x

btw - that was my current feeling, it may not be the populist current feeling, in fact I seriously doubt it, because there would be a black out then wouldn't there?? and then where would we be? apart from groping around in the dark...which can be fun...if all sharp objects are sheathed..I'll shut up now.

A most erudite, well thought out and astute observation, Billy! My theorys have not ventured into that arena, but it makes perfect sense. This participant has become less and less involved in goings on, mainly out of boredom. Your quick move to 'shut up now', however, may lead to a self fulfilling prophecy. You certainly do have something compelling to say and your vanishing act only serves to dilute the impact potential to this world wide symposium. I remain fractionally optimistic that this place can be rescued from its current spate of ennui.

btw - my sqian dubh stays with the rest of my kit out of harm's way. It was hand made by a good friend along with a matching kilt pin. Next time you need your hair twisted, try a cheap letter opener or the steel shank out of an old pair of oxfords.

jebbles, at the risk of showing off or being profusely verbose, the proverbial nail in the coffin has be deafeningly hammered in...seems profoundly apt at this moment in time...contrary to popular belief, I truly believed this was a place for friends to gather...take care dearest man. x

btw - it has been said that the kilt pin is as deadly as a AK47 when one knows what to do with it...

Billy, I don't think I've ever posted here before but I agree with a lot of what you say, but without this site we would not have met, and S and I would not have been exposed to wonderful Aussie hospitality, chez toi.
There is always something to fire a simple mind like mine... todays enduring thoughts will be about 1001 things to do with a Kilt Pin and without this site the thought that there could be more than 2 things (besides the kilt, the removal of winkles or whelks from their shell!) would never have entered my mind.

I have been reading some previous pages here and discovered the egg debate. I know it is a bit far to go but the last white eggs I had were in Singapore, but, you had to pay a premium for them. Did they pay the chicken with extra grain because he laid white eggs?

Jeb i have never visited here before so I would probably need to read more than the last couple of pages to work out what this space is all about....also is probably best not done after a few drinks...
But tell me...do you really have time to keep track of the number of posts vs number of views?

I have something to add. In plain English so people who don't post here regularly can understand it. When you have a free and open forum you are going to get all manner of people posting. Tell me kiddies, what happens then? You get people who don't care about others, you get people who just want to hurt others, you get trouble makers. People complain and certain deterrents need to be put in place. Things cannot go back to what they were. The site changes. Some people don't deal well with changes. But tell me, without growing and changing, what or who would you be today? So, instead of crying about how it used to be, why not embrace the changes and make it a bigger and better place for people to gather.

Rena, Goodonya for having your say (but Ummm kiddies? I can only wish lol) I do not have a problem with change, if the change is for the better. But I do have a problem when people try to take away the diversity this site once had, by dictating what can and cant be written by others, criticising the use of words purely because the words are not written in ‘plain english’. There seems to be a bit of a misconception that everyone should be in some sort of love-in state all of the time. The way some people talk about it, I envision 70’s hippie communes where everybody shares nicely and dances around and nobody disagrees. Well, those hippie communes didn’t work that way and neither do communities like Sudoko.com.au. I am a plain English speaker but I just love to be challenged by the members who use words and expressions in their posts I would not normally use. They make me smile, they make me think, they help me grow.
I support a persons right to freedom of expression. A diversity of opinions and language that make me think tells me I am alive. And, btw we wouldn't be still posting if we didn't care!

Bean - it is not to difficult work out how many views v's how many posts - when I came in here now it was 1218 posts / 28982 views :)

Gail - I read some of the creative posts in here and just love saying to myself "What the ....! are they on about" and with some I probably will never know, but it is fun trying to fathom them ROTFL

Where's the counter showing how many views there have been? I only see the number of posts.

Jaz - I wasn't referring to the number of views v's the number of posts ... that is obvious.
I was referring to this post by Jeb on the 15/8:

"147 visits since the 3:02 AM post yesterday and only nine posts in between."

Without looking back to your post do you recall how views there had been then vs the number of posts?

When I came in it was 1221 comments : 29101 views.
So I will do a Jeb and comment that there have, since your post, been 119 views with only 2 posts and now I make it 3... comprende?

A totally different matter to the number of posts vs number of views. I was merely amused/bemused that anyone had the time to keep track of this sort of data! I certainly don't [tho I have made an effort in this instance to clear up this misunderstanding]

Like you, I enjoy it when when some of the creative genius on this site use words as their medium to incite us with a bewildering collage.... I too go "what the ..... and I also wonder what are they on..."

How boring it would be if we all thought, spoke or wrote the same.... 3 cheers for freedom of speech.... a lot of the diversity has disappeared from easy to appease the dictates of the narrow minded critical ones..... may it not happen here in "D & D".... which apparently stands for Discussions and Debate and not drunk and disorderly as I appeared last time I posted.

Heidi - the number of views is on the Forum main page....under Off Topic. It also lists who last commented and the number of comments for each forum page.

BTW...hate to admit it but I remember the hippie era of the 70's.... 'make love not war...' may have been the chant but the reality was more as you portrayed it...certainly not peace and harmony at all times between all people.... wasn't much different to current times. Sunbury was quite an experience tho.....

Well I could get ghastipated here but I won't. There are/always have been intelligent/articulate people commenting on this site on all pages. The Discussion and Debate page was introduced by Rose to add a different flavour to the site. It has elicited some thought provoking topics from gun control, climate change, racial issues to the use of the word 'yonks', eggshells in coffee and so it goes... and it has been/is a veritable feast of imagination, wit, integrity and diversity. I'm glad I have had the opportunity to sit at this table even with a small plate, using my fingers, with a dictionary by my side.
The question raised I believe was 'where did everybody go?' and it is heartening to see responses to the topic in question on this page. What is slightly saddening is to see a few posts on other pages attacking people commenting on this forum rather than addressing the issue raised.

We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word has been spoken.

Count me in as being here...I was missing in action for awhile. I've found...pleasure, debate, laughter, ideas...even daffy ones that are fun to think about on these pages, and would love to find and learn more.....
It would be nice to just know what lurkers think when visiting this page...Gail, as Jeb noted was very honest and the comment could have become more revealing if others had added to it or questioned why...other than those of us who often do just that to evoke comment...that's rather easy to do, perhaps some will try...honestly...no one will get hurt, nor have their feelings crushed....

I had some time today so decided to update jebs stats - since my last update there has been 7 posts vs 243 views. Seems there is some interest in reading what is written in D & D – would that be called a ‘lurkasm’

Oh! Now I remember what I really came in here for (ding!) - to ask the Yanks (read as affectionate) opinion (or anyone for that matter) about Obama’s choice of running mate? Good, bad or indifferent. I know many Aussies are hoping that Obama is successful in the election later this year.

Mama... should I feel admonished for being flippant?
I must find the time to start at the beginning and browse thru the pages and get a genuine feel for what D & D is about [having only read last 2 pages]. I also wonder wonder what those who indulge in 'lurkasm' [great word Jaz] think and why they don't contribute. Surely it isn't because they have no opinion? It isn't good when people are hurt or left feeling trampled on when all they have tried to do is express themselves honestly.

I don't want to turn this into a "this is what I think sessions.." but...

André- I think you are safe... most geeks don't have what it takes to inspire ones true sapiosexuality nature and so therefore it follows, does it not, that sapiosexuality cannot result in geekism [maybe nerdism??? LOL.... must check with Jaz]

Over here in the Uk we have scant information to go on regarding the Obama/Clinton situation. Newspapers report that Bill Clinton is not happy with Obama and this is causing tension in the fields. But I don't have any take on it at all. As with all politics these days (in my humble opinion) it seems to be about trying to woo crowds with sleek campaigns but no follow through... a politicians promise what is it worth?
