I've just been out chatting to the plumber [a good neighbour].
Lachie has been excavating down around our broken pipe which is very close to bursting in a spectacular fashion. Not game to turn the water unless someone is at the meter ready to turn it off. Trying to save some money by doing the labouring ourselves - bloody dificult jpob with all the tree roots. I'm going to throw a hissy fit myself if we don't have running water again soon.

Becky, the expanding girth of one of the main roots is putting so much tension on the copper pipe which isn't going to accommodate the situation any more and is going to fracture .... there is a seam developing where it plans to seperate!!
Was a pin hole that leaked water that was invisible to the naked eye when it all started. We are going to get a big piece of pipe connected with a bend in it to accommodate the root.
We can't afford to remove the tree [$2000+] and if we cut through such a major root the tree is likely to come down on the house next time we have a big wind...that is if it doesn't die first!! [then we would have the expense of removing it anyway] Trying to avoid digging up my entire front yard to replace the whole length of pipe between the meter and the house.

Oh, Bean, what a lot of work you have. I hope it all pays off and the leak gets repaired and the tree lives for many more years!

Bean, sounds like that should work. Just make sure you leave a lot of "room" around the root. Believe it or not, they do move over time.
