I might as well feed the dogs while waiting for the race to start. There's over an hour to go.

When I was a kid Heidi I used to pretend I was a horse....Black Beauty, The Silver Brumby....I could even run in rhythm so that I made clip clop noises... yes...I neighed as well....all I ever wanted was my VERY OWN horse!

One of my earliest memories was sitting astride an old draught horse [draft for you H.] and wondering how on earth to get down. I was older than you...about 3 1/2!! My legs were so short they stuck out at right angles to the horses very broad back. I remember considering walking to the horses rear end and sliding down its tail. The horse had stopped at a gate and even the fence posts were a long way down from where I was perched....I was perfectly safe providing I was happy to stay where I was until I was rescued. My brother who had hoiked me up there in the first place walked 1/2 mile home to get help [the horse wouldn't turn around and come home for him either]

My first memory of riding a horse was at my grandfather's property. I was probably 14 or so, maybe a little older. The horse hadn't been ridden for a while so my grandfather decided it would be a good idea to get me to give it some exercise. It got some exercise alright - straight across three paddocks at a gallop (how did it know where it could get through!) until it stopped suddenly at the edge of a dam. I am still proud of the fact that I didn't fall off, and embarrassed that I couldn't get it to go back to it's paddock!

I guess it all comes down to priorities, Suzy. When you start teaching, you might get as hurt / confused as I do about children with no school supplies or lunch, but you'll find their parents at the TAB or the local.

Na ah Heidi, Mad Rush is the favourite! It pays $5.20 compared to $8.30 for Septimus! Anyway, you've got Littorio! You could do well on that one, it's paying over $40!

I agree Susan - that's why I like cyber-sweeps - no actual money involved! I think I actually bet on a horse in the cup in 2001...

trained by the legend Bart Cummings - no wonder! You have to feel for the jockey, trainer, owner etc of the second place horse, especially to lose by millimetres.

Excerpt from Ally's school newsletter:

The excitement of the school Snail Racing Cup gripped the school today. Hundreds of snails were brought in by their enthusiastic and colourfully dressed owners. Congratulations to the winner and placegetters of the final...

Devastatingly *** Cup had it's first fatality on the track with one snail not surviving the excitement.

(Turns out a teacher stepped on it!!)

Nup...got it right first hand...Susan your horse won by less than a nose hair...it was by a whisker on the chinny chin chin....Blake is sounding pretty chuffed right now! My horse needs to learn not to try and lead the pack...leave a bit for the final sprint...

Hopefully your horse wasn't injured Heidi. Suzy, my brother owns part shares in a few race horses. As a show of support I put $5 on one a few months ago. Went to the TAB, didn't have a clue how to put on a bet. His horse wasn't even expected to place, but won. I think I got nearly $100. If only I'd put on $10 000, I could have retired....sigh

You want coffee with your muffin Suzi? I'm having a flat white...they are chocolate muffins with caramel in the centre...definitely not weight watchers muffins. Wonder if there will be any left by the time Pete gets back!!!

All snails were released into the wild - that is they went over the back fence of the school, which means into acres of free land to live out the rest of their lives in freedom and comfort.
