The experienced cow (545) gave birth first. Calf #666 is a heifer calf. The first-timer (575) is still in labor, but she's not really pushing hard. I've known first-timers to take hours.

Still no progress with that heifer. I have seen no hard pushing, which makes me think that we have a stillborn calf. The calf's movements stimulate hard contractions. She won't let me near her to try to help, so I don't think this is going to end well.

Heidi, wishing the heifer and her calf well. Will you have to call a vet to come out and help?

Finally got the heifer up in the barn, and called the Vet. I have to load her up and take her in to the clinic now, 'cause he's too busy today. I'm 99% sure the calf is dead.

Heidi, keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome, at least for the momma cow.

I'm back from the Vet's. Mama is doing fine. The Vet gave her an epidural. The calf, a huge bull, was way too big for her to deliver and was stillborn. The Vet had a hard time getting it out with his mechanical puller.

I did leave the house once today. I had to go to the farm store and arrange for fertilizer for the hay fields to be delivered on Wednesday. They'll drop off the fertilizer buggies an I'll use my tractor to spread it. But while there, I discovered that they had baby bunnies for sale. I bought 2. One looks like a siamese cat and the other is white with a gold stripe down the back and gold freckles on the sides. Both are mixed-breeds.

Heidi, hope you will post pictures of the bunnies. They sound cute. How long will it take IH to notice the new addition?

Hi, All! Just popping in for a moment. We've had a busy few days! Saturday night hubby and I went to an adult "chamber music party" - wine, cheese, reading music with other adult string players and pianists, though I was the only beginner. We read from EASY arrangements, but I still struggled (but enjoyed it). I should have been home gninaelc, but we decided to give the chamber music a try. Stayed up too late to work on the gninaelc I had avoided to be ready for D and SIL arrival Sunday morning. Late night PLUS start of daylight saving time PLUS very early start of the day made for "jet lag" and headache all day long. Again, too much running around and ffuts to do yesterday, so didn't get here again. Snuck off to the computer for a few minutes to pop in and say hello!

{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}, prayers, positive thoughts, and healing vibes for all!

Hope you get some rest and some help with ffuts, Suzy! Prayers for your Mum!

Lizzy, we miss you and hope things are improving!

Broni, give yourself a bit of rest from work on the boat!

MizT, remember to pace yourself with your work!

Heidi, your work on the farm isn't more important than you are. Take care of yourself! (I'm shocked and amazed that IH came out and helped you when pulling the calf. That's one redeeming quality.) People on the tour should be allowed to see that yours is a WORKING farm; not everything is perfectly complete; fencing can be a work in progress.

Off to do some more ffuts. Take care, Everyone!

I just had a nice 4 hour nap, but feel like I need a lot more sleep. It was a stressful day today.
Now to feed puppies, then go to bed for the night. I don't think we're gonna have anybody calving tonight, so I'm nor doing a cow check.

Hi, Everyone! No time to read; the bed is calling my name. (Or maybe that was the cat trying to get comfortable on my side of the bed?)

I hope to have time to get here for a longer visit tomorrow. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, prayers, healing vibes, positive thoughts and for each of you!

Evening all,
No news about mum today, other than she's probably going home tomorrow...

The baby news is that I now know what it must be like to be a rock star. Strangers in cars are pointing at the 'tiny babeee', other strangers on the street - she must be so new.. how old is she? Strangers at a distance, pointing.. tineeee babeeeee, look at the tineeeee babeeeee... The only thing missing was cameras taking paparazzi shots!

Suzy - I hope you can take great comfort from the baby as you face your Mum's illness. There is nothing like a new baby to attract the attention of people around you.
Heidi - sorry about the calf.
Brenda - cute video!

Morning friends, I have helped myself to a cup of coffee, ahhhh. That first sip of that first cup of the day, wonderful. Did I say i really like my coffee?

It is anther overcast damp ugly morning. Temp is mild now, but even so humidity is so high it is sticky, 90% humidity. showers for this afternoon, but I heard forecaster say NO SEVERE weather in the next 7 days, and this the height of tornado season. YEAH.

Nineten years ago this area was under 13 + inches of snow! The blizzard of 93, wich left hundreds of thousand without electricity. Temp was 16 degrees and the wind chill unimaginable, as snow blew sideways, and there was strang green lightning and thunder. Al and I were taking turns wearing his ccold weather survival suit, and digging a path to the wood pile, and very happy we had wood for the fireplace. I built a snow ave on the back deck and put my food from fridge into it. Never orked so hard trying to keep warm as that week without power. this week, we have temps of 80 degrees all week, ya never know in Alabama.

speaking of survival gear, I still have that suit, only time it was ever cold enough here to wear it, and we each got too hot even then. this is more suited for sub zero temps and being outdoors for long periods. I do wish I knew someone who could use it.

Tami, another trip to the dentist today with one of the beastie boys?

Cyn, hope you wake rested and ready for the rest of your trip.

Suzy, nice that you had a bit of fun at the coffee house. I understand a bit about all the comments and glances towrd the baby. My youngest attracted attention also, she was not as small as N, but small, and she had this mop of hair! I had to up her bangs first home from hospital, they were getting into her eyes. We heard comments, did you see the hair on that little baby??

June, here, if clothes areleft out overnight, most likely they get damp again. we almost always often have a heavy dew fall, enough so grass is wet and walking through it will leave the hem of your pants wet, and leaving clothes on the line wetter again.

Heidi, what are your plans for the bunnies? Indoors as pets? or would the dogs consider them fresh food?

I need to plan my day, yesterday just rolled on by without me accomplishing much. I hope today is not the same.

hugs to each of you, with extras. Till later.

Tricia, yes to the dentist. Could not get all three in one day. I went yesterday. Dylan goes today and Mitchell tomorrow. This is a new dentist. My neighbor, candy thief's mom, works there. She tried to get us appointments together but no luck. I really like the dentist and office staff.

You're RIGHT! Easy isn't there! All I get is a blank white screen. I bookmarked the SA page, and it came up for me with no problem. I pity the people who don't indulge in this page. They must be suffering from withdrawal.

I was REALLY tired. After taking that 4 hour nap, I slept for another 10 hours.

Now I need to let #575 out with the herd, then get some diesel for my tractor so I can bury the calf. I also need to do a cow check.

The bunnies are in the pen with the chickens. They have a 50'x30' (15 1/4m x 9m) outside pen (with a doghouse for them, where I put their food) and a 12'x5' inside pen as well. It's covered with netting to keep predators out.

Easy is back up, finally, and it sounds like I wasn't the only one having withdrawal pains.
I decided that since the site was broken, that I'd go back to sleep and do nothing today. I really needed a LOT of sleep. Pity, too, because it was a beautiful day to get work done. Now I have to get dressed and go to the Cattlemen's meeting. It starts in less than an hour.
