I just checked out the link, it looks lovely. My father went to a "Guildford Grammar", would that have been in Guildford, which the train goes through?

No as a PhD student the year never ends, it just flows into the next year, not like normal Uni where you only work 1/2 a year

My father grew up in WA, and his sister and her family still live there. My Aunt visits every few years but I haven't seen those cousins for almost 30 years

Research into MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems)

I just googled MEMS (so that I wouldn't have to ask you what it was, as I feel that I have done that before!!). Found a page called 'what is MEMS technology' which told me about it although alot of the explanation was a little technical for me. It does look like an interesting topic though. Is it used in everything, or just something specific like medical technology?

The thing that decides when to deploy the airbag in your car is a MEMS accelerometer.
They are used where you want to sense motion, or measure pressure and many other places

Oh yes, it did say something about sensing motion.
Do you have to put a lot of hours into the work, or is it a process that takes time?

OK I'm off to finish up here and then go home. It's been nice to occupy myself by chatting here, like old times, as Rolanda puts it. See you all later

Sudokuaholics. How has your day been?
Tonight, the three of us (gee I like the sound of that) are going out for dinner. Traditionally, every second Friday night is takeaway night but nothing appeals. I suggested it to hubby, and seeing as the only child at home tonight is the pleasant one, he thought it sounded like a jolly good idea! Probably just go down to the local pub, if we can't get in there, we'll try the next till we find something!

Good morning all! Still dreary here but i think the rain has stopped. I see nobody has been here for a while and I missed the convo again. I'll have to figure out the right time.

Mary, I'll have to ask hubby for the cranberry relish recipe. I don't think it is difficult, but I know he makes it a couple of days ahead of time so the flavor really blends in.

Hope you all have a very nice weekend!

Morning Stella, hope you're feeling better. Hubby still fighting his chest cold. Getting better slowly.

My sister and I split the cooking for Thanksgiving, tho she ends up doing the lion's share. We drive to her house (100 miles) and it's hard to take hot dishes. I bring the salad, cranberry sauce, dessert and rolls. I also bring supplies for the Christmas meal. Figure that since she's doing the cooking, we should share in the cost(turkey, potatoes, etc.).
Will try and get back later.

Becky, I bought what looked like an ice chest a couple of years ago, but you don't put ice in it. Instead, it plugs in -- regular outlet or car -- and it keeps food cold or hot depending on which way the plug is turned. In my ongoing love/hate relationship with technology, it's been a sweetie.

Becky, I drive 70 miles to my sisters home. I have our food in ice chest and re warm it once I arrive. Since I do my cooking the day before anyway, it would be in the fridge and cold. I allow for a re warm in cooking times of items that it might matter. Usually there are ice chests and boxes lined down her hall and into her library, as we all bring our food and finish cooking it. Her microwave, oven and stove get a work out as we come in and fis=nish cooking our foods!

Ruby, I've never seen anything like that. Will have to have a look around. Would be great for picnics.

MizT, I use the distance as an excuse when people ask. I'd do the same, but my sister is 10 years older and only likes the way she does things. Since I use our mom's recipes, she ok with those dishes. Either way, there's always enough for a group of thrashers.

Speaking of food, time to stuff our faces. Hope to catch you guys later.

Ruby, that's a sweet idea. Am just buzzing through at the mo, having just put the shopping away, its time for some R & R. When I get back for some serious pootering later, I will post my recipe for a three layered Christmas Ice-Cream Cake. Haven't made it in years. Hubby only mentioned it a couple of days ago and D#3 asked if we could have it this year. I'm sure the idea of an ice-cream cake sounds absurd to the Northeners but those down-under will fully understand! Can be used for any hot weather festive occasion.
Bye for now, catch you later.

Ruby, we have the same little fridge. We liked it so much, and use it so much, that my in-laws got the same one. We mostly use it to keep foods cold while we're travelling. And we plug it in our van and then use the converter plug to plug it in at the hotel or whose ever house we're staying. We've only used it to heat once. We mostly bring the cold dishes or desserts.

Good morning all! Brisk this morning, 31F. Hubby is making the trip to Boston to get D#2.(He left an hour ago) I'm still getting over my cold and I didn't think I would have the energy to drive for six hours. (not to mention loading all of her stuff into the car) I got a ride for S#2 to his soccer practice and he left 45 minutes ago. (I'll go to his game at 1pm though.) Now it's time to get some stuff done.
Have a nice weekend!

ps: Brenda, I didn't think it got that cold in England, 1F? I thought the climate stayed milder than that.

Update: hubby just called and said he should have given himself more time because he is driving in a snow storm and the roads are covered enough to make it slick and it is snowing hard! The first snow on a road is usually bad because the road still has that glaze on it from all of the oil from the cars. After the first snow, the roads are usually manageable. Good thing we just got new tires on the car this week!

I'm in shock. Let me start by saying I am a Chemical Engineer studying to be a High School Science Teacher and tutoring kids in Math... There is a news story today with an animated dancer. Depending on whether you see her moving clockwise or anticlockwise you using either more of the right brain or left brain. No matter how many times I look at it, she is moving clockwise. Reading down the left and right brain lists, math and science are definitely left brain and stay left brain no matter how many times I look at the list. Now I'm all befuddled, do I quit studying and take up ... I don't know, what is a right-brain type occupation?
