Hi Ruby, thanks for the weather info. He is going to the city so hopefully will not have too many problems with flooding.
the oak tree is a fitting tribute to my late husband, the plaque which went with it read 'In Living memory.....' rather than loving. Unfortunately that plaque was destroyed by vandals about a month after it was concreted into the ground. I thought I would save my kids (and myself) heartache by not replacing it to be vandalised again. We know what the tree symbolises.

Julie, you are probably right about the extra activity. d2 brought a note home from school with the offer of music lessons - brass instruments - $20 for a term of lessons in a group of 10, plus a $20 instrument fee which will allow her to take the instrument home with her. Unbelievable! Of course it all conflicts with everything else we do, but who could pass up the opportunity to allow their child to try out an instrument!!

Brenda, I live over 600 miles south of New York. I think all their weather is cold. Don't go by anything I say.

I cashed in my gift certificate yesterday and have freshly cut hair, waxed legs (ouch! though not as bad as I thought it would be), coloured eyelashes and waxed and coloured eyebrows. After having almost invisible eyebrows my entire life, I'm feeling a bit like a clown now. Hubby and daughters keep looking at me funny too. It was fun to be spoilt though!

Suzy, good on you. Research has shown that kids who take to music instruction do well in school and beyond.
One of my greatest regrets in life is that I didn't learn piano as a child. I wouldn't have done well, but I still regret it now.

Ruby, I agree. We have an old piano, but no one touches it. We have 3 guitars and hubby plays them. d1 picked one up recently after the new boyfriend taught her some songs. d2 loved the recorder, but they stopped teaching it at school. That's what made me think the brass instruments might be a match. Could be hard for her to sing (her passion) with the instrument though!

Here's a question that may seem trivial... d1 bites her nails. I've been thinking about getting acrylic nails for her as a way of helping her stop (tried the yucky tasting stuff, she just complained that it tasted bad and kept on biting!). Acrylic nails are expensive here so I wanted it to be short term but worried about the damage to her nails when we stopped. The place I went to yesterday does 'gel' nails which they say are 'natural' and don't damage your nails. Is it true? Are they strong enough to stop her biting? Has anyone had these?

Suzy...I have had all types of nail treatment and found the gel to be most like natural of the applied nails....It left no real damage and was just as hard and strong as the acrylic nails..plus you didn't have to deal with the unpleasant smell of the acrylic as it's being applied. Having said that though, A plain manicure done on a regular basis often encourages young girls to take care of their nails and it stimulates natural growth and strength....may be worth a try!

SA3'ers, Please forgive my failure to greet one and all. I was too busy trying to remember what I wanted to say to Suzy and to get it posted while the brain cells were still working. Hope its a great day or night where you are in this wonderful world of ours.

Thanks Mamacita! It always pays to ask! I'll check the budget and maybe take her over - especially as they gave me a 25% student discount card for her to use. Full price is extreme compared to what I paid in LA - sometimes I think living there has spoiled me for Oz. It's something like $60 plus $15 for extensions and $30 a fill. d1 commented that if she helped me pay for it she would be more likely to look after them - sounds good to me!! She has nothing to manicure! Her nails are way below the end of her fingers... I tried to give her one once and by the next morning there were fragments of polish left at the base of her nails!!

To all of you who made suggestions, I really appreciate it. This week, I am going to try Becky's stuffed pork chops. Have to shop tomorrow instead of Saturday because our street is having a garage sale. I will be finalising the next fortnight's menu tonight, so any suggestions will be considered. Will post the menu when it is done.

Suzy, I used to bite my nails until they bleed. One day I decided it was time to quit. I don't know anything about gel nails. My neighbor has acrylic nails and gets fungal infections.

Stella, can they link the bearings to the accident. If so, have the repair shop write an estimate and turn it into your insurance company. It never hurts to try.

Brenda, tell him to pack warm clothes. New York is usually a little colder than Ohio and our high for this weekend is in the 30's (1+ C). Then you have to factor in the wind. So, I'd suggest a warm coat, gloves and scarf.

Ruby, you flip the page with such flair.

Gail, have you ever had Gumbo? It's a thick soup that's a little spicy served over rice.

Well, off to make hubby's lunch for tomorrow. Hope to catch up with you all sometime.

Busy day today, I am just getting a chance at the puter before turning in for the night. hope to catch all of you about change over time.

Was it Ruby saying she thought daylight saving starts Sunday? YEP, I looked it up today, March 9, second Sunday in March. So every9ne go out and buy new batteries for the smoke detectors, as it is suggested beginning and end of DST is a good time to change those when you change your clocks.

We're all set for tomorrow's street garage sale. We don't have a lot to go in it, just time to get rid of some old furniture that I refuse to take with us if we move again!

Bean, doesn't really matter which night. I still can't get used to cooking primarily for three. Usually cook enough to feed an army, or at least enough for the workers to take some the next day for lunch!
