I haven't looked at the papers much lately, and hadn't heard about the Bali Bomber's executions. That's a lot less terrorists to take the lives of even more innocent people. I have no sympathy with them.

OH VIV, I need to send you recipe for cooking that turkey! Keep mentioning it till I do, please, it is late tonight and afraid I cannot get my brain in gear to do it now.
I use something called a browning bag, not sure if you have those, made by the Reynolds aluminum co I believe, but it is not aluminum, looks like plastic but actually made from some nylon formula that can go into the oven. No basting required, and turkey comes out juicy and delish. But I have baked them before the browning bag was invented, under a tent of aluminum foil, and that helped keep they moist. Problem with turkey is most people over cook or under baste and they dry out.
I remember the first turkey I made on my own, age 20, a wife and Mom, and wanted to make dinner for my family, both sides. I had helped bake a turkey before at home, so it was not a new thing. BUT during cooking, I kept smelling something not usual for coming from a baking turkey. As my father was carving it, he also smelled the "something" and found I had left the neck bones in the neck end of the turkey, wrapped in waxed paper! We were smelling the paper getting hot in the oven hehehe. Now, I looked and removed those parts that were in the other end, and did not realize I needed to check the neck end also!

You're scaring my turkeys away!
My MIL always used a plain brown paper grocery bag. They worked great. I just like to baste a lot. I get to enjoy the aroma more.

AHHH, June, thanks for that info. OK, if the large is large enough for that 13 pound turkey, you are all set. I will look up times and temperatures and seasonings tomorrow for you, and get them put on here for all to share. REALLY make you hungry.
By chance, we had some previously cooked and frozen (by me) smoked turkey and made today dressing and cranberry sauce. I love it so much why save it for thanksgiving only . I make a whole grain, low fat version of the dressing (aka stuffing) so it is not a forbidden food. Hubby was a happy chappy tonight!
VICI, loved the book! just finished it.

Evening everyone.
June, happy that you had a good time at lunch and the photo exhibit. Maybe you'll be able to get to the Monet exhibit soon. They're showing Warhol here and haven't decided on wether to go or not.
Rena, bet time will fly even faster now. In case I don't see you, have a great time.
Suzy, was going to nag you, but just don't have the heart for it tonight.

Susan, so sorry to hear about your son's friend. I've known a few people who have chosen to do that. If they only knew what it does to family and friends. My heart goes out to you, your son and the young man's family.
Ruby, sorry to hear about Robert. It's hard losing a friend now matter how or when they pass. Sounds like he led a good life. Take care.

after being gone 98% of the time since the end of may, my hard working man is home for good! i am very happy about this, tis true! i hope i am still happy 3 days from now when he is getting in my way, and doing things differently than i have been doing them. i am happy not to be the sole disiplinarian anymore, and be fun mom again. woohoo! thanks for being happy with me....you gals are great!
i seem to have missed the death of a close friend of susan's son. i hope your son can find the peace and solace he needs to endure through this tragedy.
ruby i am not sure what you are going through right now as i haven't read more than a couple of pages. however, it sounds like prayers are in order for you and your too. take care.
i have very sore arms from raking leaves for over 2 hours today. it even hurts to type! i'm hoping with a big dose of motrin and some heat they will feel better.
i will continue to come and visit. how could i abandon the ladies who got me through it all? i can't express how greatful i am to all of you!
Thank you!

Hi, June, Heidi, Becky, MizTricia and Mariana!
All this talk of turkeys - and I haven't cooked a turkey in a number of years. Since we're going to have dinner with MIL on Thanksgiving, there won't be any left-overs. She calls them "must-goes." Maybe I should make a small turkey for us sometime this month or early next. Looking forward to your directions, MizT, as I might want to try something different from what I'm accustomed to.

Hi Julie. I won't be roasting a turkey this year either. Going to my sister's for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They don't like to drive much anymore.

Just stuff them with homemade dressing in an oven bag. I do save the carcass and simmer it for the broth. Makes a rich tasting soup.

Hubby prepares our turkeys and the only trick he uses that I can remember is that he bakes them upside down - apparently they come out more moist. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but his turkeys are yummo!!

I don't think I've used the oven bag in quite a while. My Mom used to use the brown paper bag from the grocery store method. I vaguely remember that at one time I placed an orange in the cavity and made the stuffing/dressing separately. Maybe I put cloves in the orange? I really can't remember.
Has anyone tried brining their turkey?

Very interesting, Suzy! Is the upside-down trick something he's been doing for a while? I'm just wondering if it's a tried-and-true method. It might be worth a try.

Suzy, turning it breast-side down keeps the meat moist. The juices move down thru it while baking.
Julie, I haven't tried brining. If you try it, please let me know how it turns out.
