Brenda, I'm glad your friend is in a specialized hospital. That should speed her recovery.
Rolanda, beautiful and unique flower.

Hey all! Those fall colors are really coming out all over our area!
Didn't get the room repainted this afternoon as my stepdaughters dropped in for the afternoon on their way to Lake Tahoe for the weekend. They are really great gals and it was a lovely visit. They brought their dad cookies that they baked.

One last note before I go off to bed...Mike has something called Dupuytren's Contracture in both of his hands and both of his feet. It's more commonly known as "Vikings Disease" and appears to happen to middle aged folk of Northern European descent - no kidding!
Anyway, the disease causes some sort of callused growth on the inside of his hands and feet. His hands have been slowly being drawn in so he can't open his hand flat. The surgery cleaned all that out and now his hand is in a plastic cast opened flat. Sometimes the disease reoccurs...but in a 10 days he'll have the stitches out and be able to start using his hand again (he'll need physical therapy, tho)

Hey June! I'm sure looking forward to the video Broni's going to post!
Ruby - thanks for the mole info. I think what they eat in our yard is worms...at least that's what the locals tell me. I'll be glad when we start getting some rain so they'll head off into other areas.

Just put up a photo I took a little while ago of Laura feeding a kookaburra. There were three in the tree. When the second one came down it brushed my face with its wing then landed 6 inches in front of her. That photo has her standing back eyeing them off (Not on my page)

Afternoon all.

Just been off investigating why our connection dropped to 56k. Just a symptom of wireless, nothing we can do about it... Sigh...

June a comment by Mariana about Laura and the kookaburra and how it would be a "shame to have her nose pecked off" makes me wonder if I have EVER heard of a kookaburra ever hurting anyone or anything other than their usual prey...snakes, lizards, rodents.... apart from the lizards definite benefits to us all!

They are undoubtedly one of my favourite Australians... Eaa has one of the best photos of one in her gallery.

Hi evryone
The only damage I have ever seen a Kookaburra do is steal a sausage from one of my nephews hands, poor little fellow (my nephew that is)
as that was the last sausage, on the BBQ,
shame I didnt have a camera handy, as it was priceless the look on his face......

Lots of 'tame' kookaburras over the years that take the meat from your hands. Have felt a beak a couple of times but it has never hurt. Laura has had them take meat from her hand and once our grandson Kyle, when he was two, actually put his hands around one and tried to hold it.
There have been three around most of today looking to be fed and one taking the meat from my hand.

Now magpies are a different story.

Maybe some coffee will help!

June, saw the photo of Laura, and the bird, bigger than I thought it would be. Looked at your Luna park photos also, you got some lovely shots! That self portrait of you in the skinny mirror was fun and I love all the colors in your shirt, very nice.

Kookaburras are quite big birds and eat fish (I have to have a net over my fish pond), small snakes, lizards, mice etc but are not agressive.
The bird is closer to the camera than Laura so that probably makes it look even bigger.
