Cyn, the kids have been off visiting my mother, which has involved a full day of travelling on their onesome on either side of the visit. We all leave for Port on Friday - more travel!! They won't want to leave home for a few months...

I would have LOVED to do something to her, but what would that teach the 100 little children who were watching the whole thing? And I would have lost my job. All I could do was lecture her on animal cruelty, without raising my voice. I was representing the zoo.
We had some really dumb people who came there. Really dumb. There were a pair of Peccaries that we kept behind 2 fences, with an 8 foot space between fences. A Peccary is probably one of the most dangerous animals in a zoo, though they look like cute, hairy little pigs. When nobody was looking, this idiot lifted his 2 year old daughter onto the first fence, climbed over it himself, then lifted her over the second fence, and set her in the pen with the Peccaries "so she could pet the cute little pigs." They killed the child instantly, and ate most of her before help could be summoned. The idiot sued the zoo. Thankfully, he lost. The 2 fences, and the signs warning of the danger were considered to be sufficient. I had to feed and water those little Peccaries every day. I would not do it unless there was another keeper there, and I was armed with a sharp pitchfork. That was if we couldn't get them into another pen temporarily.

There was another keeper there who thought I was exaggerating the dangers. On my day off, a couple of months after he started working the same area I did, he decided to feed them while unarmed. The person he chose as his back-up, was not the sharpest needle in the pack. He went in with them, and they got him. Took his leg down to the bone. ICU for 6 months. Idiots.

Then there was the moron who climbed the perimeter fence at 2 am, took off all his clothes, and went swimming with the sea lions. They were neither trained, nor gentle. His cries for help got him escorted out. He retaliated by buying some fish, mickeying them with poison, and in broad daylight, he threw them to the sea lions. We lost our sea lion colony.

This sort of thing is why I no longer work in a zoo. I am not fond of the general public. The main reason for the existence of modern zoos is for breeding and preserving species that are threatened. By having the genes spread out in many zoos around the world, no natural disaster can cause extinction. Careful records are kept of every animal, to prevent inbreeding, and avoid weakening a species. There is a growing trend, now, to have zoos that are not open to the public, and recreate the animals natural habitat as well as possible. The ultimate goal is to be able to re-introduce creatures back into their natural habitat.

Heidi, the puppy kicker had only seen my sweet nature. I didn't know I had it in me, I kept my cool didn't even swear at her but I had the biggest knot in my gut. The anger must have shown in my eyes 'cause she back pedaled

Have uploaded some pics including one of our new Puppy and one of the Perth gathering, almost identical to Rolandas, probably due to the fact that we were frozen onto the spot. That was one cold windy day! More to come of Albany and Anne.

We had a lovely lunch with the ladies from Cockatoo....we are all pretty good on the fang and withing an hour of being seated we had eaten enough yum cha to sink the Titanic!! Gail and Hannah came back for coffee [I was red faced with embarrassment with all my junk and 'boxes' everywhere...] Everything in it's own good time...need to spend less time here..

Welcome to the sanity of SA6 Nola and Alison yesterday.
Look forward to the rest of your photo's CynB...
June I am so glad that things went ok for Laura...Sharon is being sensible...not something to be ignored but certainly not something to get your knickers in a knot over either. Fancy you being a country girl as well...should've guessed when I met you.

Hey Cyn you should look into getting a hotmail/live email account, if you send pics to yourself it automatically resizes them for you.
