That's an easy question, DOrA. Alpacas come from the Andes mountains in Peru and Chile. The area where they live has a temperature range from 45˚F / 7.2˚C down to -20˚F / -28.9˚C. So my crias will be born in temperatures a little warmer than they evolved in. Nobody who breeds alpacas plans for them to be born in summer or winter.... just the moderate temps of spring and fall. They have problems in the heat of the summer, and labor can exascerbate it.

Morning all!
Cycle # 6 is over. His platelets are down causing him to bruise easily. He developed what looked like a black eye on Wednesday night. It was worrying because it was his blind eye but, the eye itself looked okay. They said he probably just rubbed his eye. Sigh! Hating this. But, nothing to be done than to just keep on keeping on!
Midge, we're going to Coolum, not fans of Noosa. Got us a place with an ocean view. I need to see the ocean. We live near Moreton Bay and I can see it by driving 5 minutes to the east. But sometimes I need to hear the roar of the surf.

Changed my avatar to a galah, The dog one was too dark.
Midge, glad you've heard from your son. I hope his travels are great fun and good for his soul.
Looks like we might get some rain today, which would be nice but none of it will be drought breaking. Even where we live here, known for its rolling green hills, is dry.

Great TOPP, DOrA!

The question about best season for aria births is a good one. Heidi, thanks for your explanation. I hadn't really thought about it, but it makes sense that the cold temperatures aren't likely to be a problem. It also makes sense that summer wouldn't be an optimal time for births.

Hooray for Col and Cyn for making it through Cycle 6! Had they warned Col that he might bruise easily? I can imagine it might be scary if you weren't aware that it was a possibility. Have a wonderful get-away. Near the ocean sounds like a great place to rejuvenate and relax!

Cyn, I hope you got some of that promised rain. It sounds like you could use a nice gentile soaking rain.

Been raining steadily since sometime during the night. It will be good for the lawn and the garden. But then I saw on FB a dreadful dust storm in a town called Dubbo in NSW, a lovely area reduced to a dust bowl. They need the rain more than we do.

Thanks, Heidi! I thought I had typed cria, but it was late, and just now when I typed it, spell check tried to change it to aria. I think I should proof read before I 'Submit Comment.'

Cyn, I'm glad you're getting much-needed rain! I hope other areas that need it will also get a share.

I'm really dragging today and hope to get to bed earlier than usual, so I'll say Good Night and send the usual {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, healing energy, positive thoughts, prayers, and ! Happy Weekend to Everyone! I hope you can relax and enjoy!

Hey, y'all ! Christmas is coming... 74 days?

In the spirit of the upcoming season, I offer this...

Lisa thanks her grandpa, 'Thank you Grandpa for the violin you gave me last year for Christmas. I've never got such a brilliant gift!'
'Really?' asks the surprised Grandpa.
Lisa says, 'Oh yeah - every time I start playing, mom gives me 2 dollars so I would stop!'

Got some hay hauled today. I'm finally able to use my tractor again after tearing the rotator cuff.
It is getting COLD outside. Hard to believe that just 5 days ago we had a record setting heat wave with a heat index of 100˚F / 37.8˚C. We may have a frost tonight.

Ohhh I can feel my ears burning
Morning everyone.
I do pop in from time to time and catch up on the gossip, though not often as I should and say hi.
Me and my Health. Improving daily.
Sleeping at night is crapola, trying to find that comfortable position without pain, that lasts longer than a hour or two, though last night was the best Zzzz to date.
I am basically not allowed to do much at the moment. No heavy lifting. No driving for several weeks yet. There is a huge list of can not do... week by week, I can start to do chores again..
By 3 months I should be fully recovered. The main reason for the ‘can not do’ is the breastbones, which were cut, and wired back together, this needs to heal, and the cause of the discomfort.
The actual heart feels fine, the wound down the chest is healing nicely, the waterproof bandage over this should come off in 3 weeks.

Today this morning, I have an appt at the Medical Centre to check the bloods, an INR, Blood Clotting Rate which determines the next Warfarin dose for the next few days.
Tomorrow a GP appt.
I see my Cardiologist 6th Nov
And see the Heart Surgeon 19th Nov. hoping he will give me the ok to drive again, and fingers crossed all being well, to come of the Warfarin (on this Medication for 6 weeks to 3 months)

Well, time to start my day. My friend N is coming to pick me up in a couple hours to take me to the medical centre. it is within walking distance, 15 mins, but at this stage too far me to walk.
I could walk 5 mins... something I need to do daily is walking, building the mins slowly. I do get tired fairly easily and breathless. This in time will all improve.
On a daily basis I have Breathing exercises to do. And I have Neck, Shoulder, Upper Body exercises to do as well

Well, not only did yesterday's post disappear, the same thing has just happened today. I'll try again.

Heidi, the temperature here has been falling, as well. I'm not ready for wintry weather. I enjoy the cool, crisp, bright days of autumn. We kind of jumped from cool and rainy to cooler, mostly cloudy, with occasional sun peeking through the clouds. I hope a more normal autumn will return, at least for a while.

DOrA, I don't think I can thank you for reminding us that Christmas is sneaking up on us, but at least I can thank you for tempering the announcement with the joke about 'Lisa.' Wow, what an entrepreneur! None of my siblings, children, or myself thought to turn poor sounding practice into a more-making enterprise. When I think of the money I could have been making, . . . Oh, well!

Heidi, good for you and all the progress you made while doing physical therapy for your torn rotator cuff. It's great that you could get back to driving the tractor and hauling hay! Do the alpacas eat hay, or just the cows and calves?

WELCOME BACK, Rolanda! You have been missed, but we have tried to keep track of your medical progress. It seems that your recuperation is going well (if you don't take sleep and discomfort into consideration), and you're keeping busy with a variety of doctor appointments, blood draws, and exercises. We're glad to see you back here and posting. Take care and follow doctor's orders as best you can. Sending a gentle virtual {{HUG}} your way!

Tempe, my oldest grey alpaca, is due to give birth in late March. The rest, with any luck, will give birth in early to mid-October. The temperatures then are perfect for alpacas to have their crias. Remember, they are covered with alpaca fleece, which is 3x warmer than wool. They'll be fine. Right now a LOT of alpaca owners are breeding their females.

I've decided that tomorrow is the big day when I start breeding Phaeton (light fawn) to the female alpacas. Phaeton will get one week with them, then he'll be pulled out. I'll wait 2 weeks, then put Frontman (white) in with the girls in case Phaeton didn't do the job. Next year Frontman will get first crack at the girls.

Had bariatric support group tonight (required). It's really a great group. Some people are getting ready for the surgery, some have had it recently, some 6 months ago and one 2 years ago. Lots of good sharing.

I stopped on the way and picked up more alpaca feed. The alpacs had to get fed after dark tonight. They didn't seem to mind too much, but I'm tired from unloading 200 lbs of alpaca food.

Good luck to Phaeton in the next week, then to Frontman when he gets his chance. Then good luck to Frontman when he gets his turn. That 2-week break is a good idea to determine lineage. At some point, will you sell any of the young, or do you plan to first increase the size of the herd?

I'm glad to hear that there is a bariatric support group - and that it includes both those who have already had the surgery and those who are thinking about it. What a great way to get first-hand information!

Heidi, I hope you were very careful unloading the alpaca feed! That's a lot of wait to deal with. I'm glad the alpacas didn't seem to mind their late dinner!

He's 5 years old, which is a mature male.... but neither of my boys have been used for breeding before. This was supposed to be their first breeding season at the farm where they came from. They just need time and exposure to females.

The weekend is upon us here in the northern hemisphere - and has already Down Under. I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

I just got called for jury duty again. I start on Dec 2nd. This is my third time. The first time I got selected for an open-and-shut murder trial. (The whole thing, from selection to conviction lasted 3 days.) The second time I wasn't selected. I don't know of any upcoming murder trials, so I probably won't have a problem.

Phaeton is starting to show a LITTLE interest in the females finally. He only has 5 days left to do his stuff. Then he'll be pulled out and no males will be with the females for 2 weeks until Frontman gets his chance. He'll get 1 week out with them as well. Then next April I'll try the boys again to see if anybody isn't bred. If a female IS bred, she'll spit at the male.

Julie, we're just off to Coolum today. Only having one night away but I am so looking forward to sleeping with the sound of the waves pounding the shore. And watching the sunrise over the ocean. We're also looking forward to catching up with our friends who we haven't seen since just after Christmas. They live in nearby Peregian Springs where the fires were recently. Firemen were in their yard fending off the fire, successfully for them.

I think I said recently that I was collecting photos to make an album for Lachlan's 21st birthday. I had to stop that because my daughter also had that idea and so I left that one to her. I was at a loss for what to do. But I finally chose to name a star for him. It will be official and forever. After we are all long gone, that star in the Scorpius (because he is a Scorpio) Constellation will bear his name. I feel happy with this decision. It's very hard to buy gifts for men - how many etched beer mugs or decanters do they need, or want!

Wow, Heidi! Jury duty again! Here's hoping you aren't chosen - or if you are, it will be a short trial! (I was called a couple of years ago, but not chosen for the jury. Hubby had a call a year or so before that. I wonder if we'll be called again before we get too old.)

It's good that Phaeton is showing some interest. Once he gets things figured out, he still has some time left. We'll be interested in an update.

Cyn, sorry I was confused. I was thinking you and Col were getting away last weekend. I hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy visiting with your friends and listening to the surf!

It's too bad that your plan for Lachlan's birthday would have been a duplicate. Obviously, great minds think alike. I like your idea for naming a star after him. I bet he'll 'get a kick' out of having his own star!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend! Thinking of all of you and sending , {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, healing energy, positive thoughts, and prayers! Good Night!

After talking to people, I found out that there are 2 upcoming murder trials. I have no idea which this will be, and don't want to learn rumors in case I'm selected.
I have to report in on Dec. 2nd. And I have tickets, with friends, for a concert on Dec. 6th a few hour's drive away. We need to leave mid-afternoon to get there in time. If I'm selected I'll miss the concert and the ticket is $56, which I don't want to throw away. I just have to cross my fingers that I don't get selected.

My ear has been bleeding a lot the past few days. I slept most of the day today, so I guess this infection is making me weak.

Hi, Everyone!

Heidi, I'm sorry to hear that your ear infection is bothering you again. I'm glad that you can sleep and hope that will help you feel better and heal!

If it continues unabated, might it be enough to get you excused from jury duty, at least for a while? (Of course, it would be better if it could be healed or at least not as much of a problem as it is currently.) If you have difficulty staying awake, that might also suggest a deferment until a later trial would be preferable. After all, it's not as if you're trying to avoid serving on a jury.

Speaking of concerts, we have tickets for an orchestra concert tomorrow. We'e hoping we can go. Hubby is a bit under the weather today - enough that we couldn't go to a high school classmate's retirement party today. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Cyn, I hope you and Col had a wonderful, relaxing, and rejuvenating time away!

I need to get to bed earlier than usual tonight, so I'll say Good Night and wish everyone good healthy, positive vibes, healing energy, {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, and prayers as the weekend comes to a close.
