to you and your family, Rosemary - and good luck with your lifestyle change. I checked out you motel website the other day. I recognised the distinctive A-frame design of the motel where we stayed on the first night of our honeymoon 40+ years ago! We had a morning wedding in Melbourne and headed north on the Hume Highway towards Canberra and the Snowy Mountains.

I have posted a photo on my page- not as I am now but of the me I'd like to return to, or at least get nearer.
I'll try and get hubby to photograph me full length in the next couple of days.
If we did it today the bags under my eyes would add a couple more pounds!!!

Ooohhh no they didn't Col. I vaguely remember that we were given a room with 2 single beds, which we pushed together. That's not a comfortable way to spend the first night of your honeymoon!

I have decided to take each day at a time and not set myself too big a target over too long a period. (Except for my waist, of course)
I have selected a belt on which the biggest setting just fits comfortably and have attached my pedometer. My guide will be the setting of the belt. I will wear it everyday and aim for 10000 steps a day, yesterday was not a good start 4739. Still I can only get better.
Good luck with your walking. I don't know which is worse, walking in very hot or walking in very cold rain(today).

Thanks for the New-Year-round-the-world journey, Rosemary. You must have spent a lot of time researching time zones - or you had nothing better to do on New Year's Day! It was fun anyway.

Ganniemo - have you thought about marking time whenever you're not walking? Peel the veggies and mark time; wash the dishes and mark time. YTou'll feel a ninny, but you might get your 10,000 steps a day in.

I have a hint/tip for you all

When cooking, preparing meals or even just making a sandwich.

Watch what you lick off your fingers as you have finished! Take notice of how many times you do it - and count up the empty calories.

Be aware of the habit - and stop yourself before the finger gets to the mouth. Not only licking fingers - that spare bit of cheese that wont quite fit on the cheese and bickie board , those cake crumbs off the plate - that bit of broken biscuit in the bottom of the packet.

Good Luck

Hi Rose....I have just received some info from Canuk Greg on 'my page' that Beehive isn't doing so well and he said that Anne from Albany has more details. I don't have Anne's e-mail address and wondered if you do? If so, and it's okay with her for me to have it, can you send it to me via e-mail. Thanks Rose!!! BTW..that photo of you looks good.

I am here for you girl! My husband has a new health insurance plan at work that has a program to help in weight loss. They will send me a pedometer to count the 10,000 steps a day. Drinking lots of water isn't a problem for me, I always drink 3-4 litres a day at work anyway. The exercise is what I need and to not eat so many carbs, I love pasta, potatoes, etc... I know we can do it together. I didn't have any beer last night only 1 glass of wine with dinner, it's a start anyway. Plan on walking on my lunch hour today it is very nice here for us this time of year. Cheers!

rose and LK, no alcohol for me at all today, and only wine yesterday. Smaller portions. I'm finding making myslef exercise to be the toughest part. Tiny steps. The trick is to keep taking them.

WOW I made it today 10.742 steps. Helped by playing 9 holes of golf in the pouring rain. Now for bed
How are you doing with your walking? I seem to do mine in three trips.
Do you vary your route? I really will have to start taking the car to a different place as the river bank is closed due to too much rain making it dangerous.

Heyello Rosemary! Lots of water today and no beer last night. Emily & I are going to try to walk a couple of mornings a week before work and school but neither of us like to get up early . Emily wants to tone up a little for the 'Miss Winona' scholarship pageant this spring. I too am having smaller portions. I will warn you that sat. night it will probably go down the tubes as we have a party where all the food and drinks are free! Power in numbers my friend, great idea!

Hi Rosemary, Just touching base to let you know that I have started slowly. I have increased my walking and returned to the gym where I have increased the time and level of intensity of my workout. I feel it too! Since I'm trying to finish up the Christmas goodies and hubby has a birthday in another week or so, I haven't dealt with the food reduction in a true effort, but will try the half portion described by Fiona and Keith. I have also started with the water. I'm looking forward to lose a minimum of 10 lbs and a maximum of 25lbs. Losing 25 lbs will take me back to my original weight as an adult, prior to age, illness and medication. The age, illness and meds remain, but I know that I can drop most of the weight if I work at it, even at my advancing years. Supporting and being supported helps. I'm also writing down each day what I do and what I eat so that I can keep track of things. My goal for this month is 4 lbs, since I'm only doing it half way! I expect more of myself next month!Years take their toll, I remember when I could lose 5 lbs in a week and keep it off without all of this work. Those were the days....lol! I lift my glass of water to you!

Don't overdo it, Rosemary, one step at a time. Good point about losing some weight my doctor says it should make my hip/back problem much easier. Hopefully the same with your knees.

Drat Rose! Now you have convinced me to start as well... grabbed out the pedometer and started yesterday (well kind of had to after yesterday!!). My problem is that my pedometer is just a tinsy bit sensitive - so it;s really easy to get to 10000 steps!!
Judy  From San Diego
You'd better keep your doors and windows locked, Rosemary. With the drastic reduction in beer comsumption by those on this site, the beer industry is going to take a bit hit, and, as the instigator, they are going to come after you! Tee hee!

Rosemary, I'm off to a slow start, but I've started. Smaller portions, trying to drink more water. I'm 5'6.5''(that half is important). I peaked again way too close to 240..238.5(ok, maybe the scales said 240 once over Christmas). I would LOVE to weigh 140# again, but I'd be happy at 160. Baby steps. I had gotten down to 220 before my son's wedding, then stress took over. December, I didn't even try, in fact, I ate junk nonstop. I have stopped, I'm trying to eat more healty food. My pedometer is in the drawer. I will get my picture up soon...not in a bikini! Keep up your good work, and thanks for the encouragement.

8298 steps today, no wine, no wheat, no dairy (except a little milk in tea) maybe too much fruit but I got hungry. 2 litres of water.
Have a great weekend at the wedding. Get up there and dance, that is great exercise.

For our Lifestyle Change Folks: (This article reinforces that you are doing it the right way!)

On the Scales: Exercising Helps Dieters Preserve Bone Strength
By NICHOLAS BAKALAR, The New York Times
When overweight people lose weight, they often lose bone mineral density as well, increasing their risk for osteoporosis. But new research suggests that losing weight with exercise rather than calorie restriction can preserve bone strength.

Scientists randomly assigned 48 healthy, non-obese people in their 50s to three groups for a one-year study. The first group reduced calorie intake by 16 percent in the first three months and then 20 percent for the rest of the year. The second increased daily energy expenditure -- exercise, in other words -- by 16 percent in the first three months and then by 20 percent for the following nine months, carefully tracked by trainers using heart rate monitors. A control group was monitored without being assigned a diet or exercise program. The results appear in the Dec. 11 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine.

The diet group lost an average of about 17 pounds; the exercise group about 14 pounds. But the people on the low-calorie diet also lost bone mineral density -- more than 2 percent at the spine, hips and leg. Those in the exercise group experienced no significant change in bone density, and the controls lost neither weight nor bone density.

The authors acknowledge that their sample was not large and did not examine sex differences in bone mineral density responses.

Dr. Dennis T. Villareal, the lead author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, recommends diet and exercise together in a weight-loss program. 'That way, you get the weight loss benefits of the diet,' he said, 'but prevent the negative effect on bone health.'

Go Rosemary! I am hoping you can get it off, and keep it off. I am about 25kgs overweight, and diabetic. I exercise every day, and go to the gym at least three times a week, have done so for over a year, and still can't budge it. Might have something to do with what I eat. (I am a dairy queen)

Still was made redundant today - first day back after holidays - so will have heaps of time to swim at the pool every day now, and eat heaps of fresh fruit and veggies, and go easy on the vita weats with butter and vegemite!

So joining you in the weight loss stakes!
