Hi all,

I haven't been about for a long time (teenagers hogging computer, y'know). Hope you all have (or have had) a great Paddy's Day!

It's been a lovely day here. Spring has finally arrived after the longest, coldest winter ever. I know, frosty mornings don't consitute a hard winter in most places; but this is the west of Ireland! We usually get at most 10 frosty or icy mornings in a winter - we've had over 70 this year! We're definitely getting someplace else's weather... Of course, it's usually all balanced by a damp, cool summer. Suits me!

My brother is currently touring Australia with The Sawdoctors (a popular Irish band), so if any of you Aussies have ever heard of them, yay!

Anyway, greetings to all.

The Saw Doctors aren't coming to Canberra Nurn1 - only one more concert to go though and it looks like they'll be heading home (or do they go to another country before that?)

Hey Chris, I never know where my brother is going to be with the Sawdocs - he hardly knows himself (he has to check in with his wife regularly to know where he's going to be next -- it's all so rock'n'roll...!) I think they're heading home soon. What a life! They were also in Tasmania, I think, but probably that was it this time around. They'll be back down under sometime soon, no doubt. It seems to have been a great tour for them.

Many people wonder where the tradition of 'green' beer came from on St. Patrick's Day. Most assume it was a commercial endeavour started in the USA to attract customers on St. Pat's Day. The origin I've heard of was the Irish celebrate St Pat's day was celebrated with so much drinking that their stock of beer was depleted, having them resort to drinking "green beer", a term to brewers meaning beer that is not quite ready to drink. Of course, that would be Guinness "green beer."

If there is an entrepreneur who is running in the race (or anyone, for that matter), he/she can change the name slightly ("ACT Marathon", "Australia Marathon"), ask all runners to show up and participate, and trademark the name. Then make the results "official" by hiring respected judges to monitor the race. Give all the runners (and maybe the judges) a .01% ownership in the race.

If the Olympics can go private, why not the Canberra Marathon?

An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy
should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men his
age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem
too concerned about it. One day, while the boy was away at school, his
father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and
placed on his study table four objects:

1. A Bible.
2. A silver dollar.
3. A bottle of whiskey.
4. A Playboy magazine.
'I'll just hide behind the door," the old preacher said to himself.

"When he comes home from school today, I'll see which object he picks
up."

"If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a
blessing that would be!"

"If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a business man,
and that would be okay, too."

"But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good
drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be."

"And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he's going to be
a skirt-chasing womanizer."

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's foot-steps
as he entered the house whistling and heading for his room.

The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave
the room, he spotted the ojects on the table. With curiosity in his
eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm.
He picked up the silver dollar and dropped it into his pocket.

Then, he uncorked the bottle and took a big drink, while he
admired the magazine's centerfold.

"Lord have mercy," the old preacher disgustedly whispered.
"He's gonna run for Congress."

For Judy - cut and pasted from the link above provided by Sparks:

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says it is with enormous regret he has today informed the parties in dispute over the ownership and operational rights of /The Canberra Marathon/ that the ACT Government is unable to provide the necessary approvals to allow the event to proceed this year.
>
> Mr Stanhope said the government had been in regular contact with event management company Cundy Sports Marketing (CSM) and the ACT Cross Country Club (ACCC), encouraging them to settle their differences and not to jeopardise what has been an iconic sporting event for Canberra over many years.
>
> “Sadly, CSM and the ACCC have failed to resolve the dispute through mediation and it is still awaiting a final determination before the courts. I am advised that might happen until later this year at the earliest.

There have been a few instances of hope being raised that they could sort it out, but the Chief Minister had refused permission for the necessary road closures, and the hiring of barricades etc.

And last week, or maybe the week before, came the news that the two parties involved were in serious discussion to make a compromise so that this year's event could go ahead - but that didn't happen, so at the start of this week the news was that it was absolutely and definitely cancelled for this year - who knows what the future holds.

That's so very sad, CP. Almost all of the running events here dedicate the profits to deserving organizations. Is there a particular charity that will be affected by the cancellation of the marathon?

Hello everyone, the only green item in my wardrobe yesterday was an old golf shirt from Robinvale, and I wasn't wearing that. the funniest thing I seen yesterday was a friend who uses a motorised wheelchair to get around, had his hair and beard dyed green with a lime green hat with sparkles. Happy Pattys day to all above the equator.
