Rena, do you have a "store bought" curriculum? There are plenty of them out there. If a kid is home schooled here, they must come to the school at the end of the year and take state achievement tests. Will Amber have to do that?

Sorry, Rena, I forgot that it was yesterday she was starting. I lost a day of reading/posting due to a 4 hour or so power outage - not weather related - last night.

Hubby is better than yesterday but pain still there at times. I keep telling to take TWO panadeine forte tablets. The script, which he has had for a while, says maximum of 8 in 24 hours. it just means I have been left with the painting and my joints are getting OLD !!!

Ruby, we are using an American curriculum, just not doing the history & geography, ordered from the internet. Amber does not have to do any achievement tests at the end of the year. Canadian homeschooling is not as strict as American.

there is some home schooling in Australia but it does seem more accepted in US. Outback children had school of the air ( short wave radio). I am not what the situation is with them now with improved telephone coverage and computers.

Wait, Rolanda, I just read your note to me on my page. Thank you for your thoughts, concern & wishes for hubby! He didn't want me to mention our trip before we left for some reason. If things had gone as planned we would be getting home Saturday. Oh, and I hope you enjoy your lunch!

Homeschool used to be mainly for isolated families but seems to be gaining popularity.

Rena, do you find that she gets her skill and does her practice rather quickly? What do you do for more complex thought? I'll bet she reads a lot.

Hubby never listens as he believes he always knows everything. I must admit he is getting a bit more tolerent of my opinions as he gets older. He will now actually ask me to look for something he cannot find. Once he used to get cranky if I found something he was looking for.

Guess I had better climb the ladder and get back to the painting. Talk to who ever is about when I take my next break.

I taught school for thirty years, but, quite frankly, if I had a child, we'd stay home and learn.

We had to start a few grades below what she should be in so it is basically all review right now. She is not a big reader because of her dyslexia but she does enjoy being read to.

Not really because until last November she was enrolled in distance education programs. I kept asking for help and they wouldn't give me any. Wouldn't do any testing either. I'm going to have to see what I can find in the library and on the internet.

Experiencing success is very important. Finding out that she knows the work should give her confidence.

Distance learning is probably a bad idea for a dislexic child. You're on the right track.

We were both getting frustrated with school and she never wanted to do her work. When we dropped it last year I found a really good web site with themed worksheets and story books. When it was school time she was asking how many pages she had to do. The stuff we are doing now is similar so no fights yet.

She has not been professionally diagnosed but she shows many signs of it. At nine she is still reversing letters, mirror writing and since she was little she has talked backwards. Sometimes it is quite funny to listen to her.

Hi everyone, a few weeks ago (and I'm sure it was on here) you were talking about migraines and cures. I can't find the page that you were talking about it... but if anyone has a cure for a migraine could you send it to me as a personal message? (And no I don't have one, a friend has just got her first one and I remembered you all talking about it)
Thanks!

I saw the comments about a dyslexic student - get the teacher to photocopy the work onto blue paper (or at a pinch cream paper). There is some scientific reason that they can see words better on blue than on white paper. If you google, you should be able to see some reports on it. I have had to do this with a few students or they have worn blue glasses.
