Rain would die of misery if she was kept outside in a pen. That is not an option for her. She's a house dog. She's been on, and still is on, meds for incontinence. They have just stopped working. When I agreed to take her, it had already gotten to be more of a problem than her owners could handle. They called everywhere, in hopes that someone could take her instead of having to euthanize her. I was the only person in the state willing to give it a try. She's a sweet, loving dog with a sparkling personality and loads of intelligence. She hates having constant accidents, and knows that she smells horrible. She recently had a small stroke, which I think exacerbated the bladder control issue. That's about when she lost all semblance of control. The most likely outcome today is euthanasia. At least I gave her 5 more months of a happy life. She HAS been happy here.

Good mAen everyone! Got an e-mail from Doc, still stuck due to volcano. Not sure when he will be home. He knows I have wine waiting for him when he returns. He's had a ton of delays (leaving Iraq--not Afghanistan like we were originally told. I think he didn't want Darrell & I to worry).
Heidi: Good thoughts & prayers for you & Rain today. I know you'll do what is right for both of you.
Didn't know about Lena Horne. Will look it up when I get a chance.
I have missed 16 pages since my last post and am not even going to attempt to catch up.
Good wishes & vibes for those who need them.
Time for lunch soon, TTFN.

GOOD NEWS....
Rain is back home, and we've got some hope. We're starting treatment for a bladder infection, and putting her on different incontinence meds. The Vet is pretty confident that we'll see a fairly dramatic improvement in 5 days. He doesn't want to euthanize her, either. She really charmed him.

Suzanne... THAT volcano (I won't even try to spell or pronounce it's name) has really interfered with a lot of lives. I hope Doc makes it home soon.

Thanks Heidi, me too!! He's a very special friend to both of us and has been a big help to me when Darrell was in school a few years ago. Regarding the volcano (I won't attempt it either!) one of my High School friends, Christine, was in Italy and had to spend several extra days there. Not sure where Doc is stranded, will call our friend Terry (he is also very close to Doc & probably has more info than we do).
I'll keep good thoughts for Rain, keep me posted, ok? I promise to be a better SA9A pal (and not spend too much time on that OTHER site)
BTW, how are YOU feeling, Heidi?

Morning all!
Heidi, great news your appointment has been moved and even better news about Rain. I have found that Vets don't euthanise as a first option, only last. Last winter we thought the old lady was going to go, and her owner let the Vet know that she understood she was older than most horses ever get to be and she just wanted her out of pain. She's still here and seems to have a second wind!

Still kinda sore, but nothing like I will be this time tomorrow. I have oral surgery scheduled for 9 am tomorrow. It's an apicoectomy, where they make a large incision/flap in the gum, remove the bone underneath, and remove the abscess, tip of the roots of the problem tooth, and diseased bone. I'll be in quite a bit of pain for a few days afterwards. I know. I've already had two of these (20 years ago).

Suzy... several other Vets had been working with Rain before I got her, and had considered euthanasia to be the only option left. It's still not ruled out, but I hate doing it because she's so happy otherwise. He did confirm my suspicion that she recently had a small stroke. A few signs, like a droopy eye, were visible still.

Heidi, an infection causes all sorts of problems, let's hope that is the cause of the increased incontinence rather than the stroke.

We think it's both. The increased incontinence started right after the stroke, but there is a definite infection, too.

Glad Rain has a second chance, Heidi. How old is Rain? The cat rescue has a rescued Dalmation that was incontinent and the vet put her on hormones, which have greatly alleviated the problem. The Dalmation is probably about 10.

Good vibes out to all who need it. I have read and thought about you all.

Yesterday's car drive turned out to be a lot longer than expected. We visited places where MIL had grown up and even places where I grew up. A walk down memory lane. We went out for lunch and for supper ... all in all we were gone for almost 12 hours. I'm a bit sore today from sitting down for so long, but some things are just worth it. MIL very happy.

Heidi, I don't think you must ever have any guilt in association to your pets. You have been a shining example of humanity to so many, and Rain (appropriate name apparently) is no exception. If the inevitable is inevitable, please remember the quality of life she has had with you. You have done all you could ♥

V Viv, special thoughts headed your way. This is a difficult time for you. You have friends here!!

Mamacita, hope your sleep problems are soon over. Makes for a long day when you can't sleep well at night.

Heidi, good luck with your dental appointment.

Cyn, hope your internet problems are over sooner rather than later. Your Auntie Vi sounds like a very cool lady.

My daughter took me out for breakfast this morning for Mother's Day ... she was working yesterday and I was out for the day. Nice start to the day.

I have my annual physical tomorrow ... yuck!

Gotta go and fling food and feed Mr. Composter (I cleaned out the fridge today).

Julie, nice to see you posting again; we've missed you.

I am sure you will do whatever is best for Rain.
Suzanne, hope Doc makes it home soon.
CynB how long will you be without your computer?
John is coming to the funeral today which is nice of him.
That man has saved my sanity in the last couple of weeks.
There is nothing like a coffee and crosswords with a good friend to get your mind off things for a while.

I had my nana nap today, 3 hours. guess I needed it. I have cooked spaghetti sauce with minimal help from AL. he had to open canned tomatoes, I cannot make the can opener work one handed! I take a shortcut, I buy frozen pepper onion stir fry veg frozen, no chopping. It is cheaper than fresh and is always available in my freezer, does not spoil like fresh will in the veg drawer. YUCK!!

Unless I wake tomorrow with my thumb feeling completely OK. I have to go back to doc, let them remove cast and take a look. It has been going to sleep over weekend, completely asleep, numb, more than once. I called to see if this was ordinary, of course they say come in. CYA kind of thing for them.

At the moment thumb feels like it was asleep and has not come back completely awake. I really do not want to go, but do not want 3 and a half weeks more in this cast if something is wrong. Decisions, Decisions, and having to get hubby to drive me and wait, it takes a while to build a cast! Al should take his book if we go.

Heidi, I should have thought of urinary track infection, incontinence always worse when one is present. I do hope there is improvement for Rain.

Gail, I had also thought Rain was named appropriately hehehe. Heidi, do you know how she got that name? It is unusual for a dog name.

I am at fault that SA8 i still up and running, failed to ask it be closed. Heidi and eea I think were having fun seeing just how long they could keep posting and I did not want to spoil their fun.

Should I go and close it, in fairness to those who cannot get there to read?

Rain is short for her registered name: "Coronation Rain Storm". She came from one of the biggest show breeders in California. Biggest as in wins, not mass production. I'm not sure if she has her championship or not, but she looks like she should.

Gail, I checked SA 8, a bit back Julie had told us about her MIL and about her husband having reaction to the cat bite. But I understand if you are saying she could bring her life here to share more with us. We support each other, and we have spells when the board is sad, it is like life. We also share good things, like grand babies and Doggies that get a second chance, and mundane things like planting tomatoes and having 30 blooms on one petunia plant. So I join Gail in inviting Julie to share, the good, the sad, the ugly, we are here for it all, for everyone.

I just feel with the two pages going, it seems to detract from here IMHO

MizT, I just want to pick your brain for a moment. I have calving pails that are about a foot and a half deep by 18" in diameter that I would like to put wave petunias in. Would you suggest about 4 plants per bucket? Things are rather tight financially for us this year, so I will have to make sure I get the right amount of plants without overdoing it (as I usually end up doing). Thanks for your help.

Our house is a double and we had a tenant on the other side who retired and set up all these beautiful flower beds. My daughter and her family now live in the other side. I have had to cut back on the flower beds because I just don't have time and the arthritis doesn't always allow me to do all I want. So I'm not all that familiar with annuals and could probably use advice. I would like to put them in raised pots, buckets, etc. so I don't have to get down on my knees to take care of them. (This idea of course came from you.)

MizT, I meant to start that ramble off with your thumb problem. Hope it sorts itself out soon. When I was a kid I had an upper body cast with the left arm in a raised cast also. Because I was just a kid the doctors didn't really believe me when I told them the cast hurt my hand. Eventually they cut a small hole in the cast in the area of the thumb where it hurt and sure enough, the cast was digging into the base of the thumb and had caused an open wound. To this day, many many many years later (I won't say how many), I have a scar at the base of my thumb from the cast.

I have plans for every night this week, have to be the taxi service for the boys. Tomorrow they have to be in two different spots. Luckily hubby is available to help.
