Julie, I hope you have a good time ... we'll miss you.

Cyn, in Canada you don't need a separate license for standard transmission vehicles. Learn something new every day, especially on this site. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Theresa - here, if you have a manual licence, you can drive an automatic but not vice versa. It's not just that I don't have the licence, it's that I never learnt a manual - mainly due to me flying off the handle at anyone trying to teach me! My ex-husband tried to teach me once on a quiet country road. I got angry with it & him, let the car shudder to a stop on a bridge and stormed off. For half an hour he drove beside me saying 'C'mon, get in the car', the kids were in the back screaming and I only gave in to shut them up or I'd never have got in again!!
I have mellowed in my old age.

Afternoon/Evening all!
Cyn, I thought after 3 years you could drive either manual or automatic. Just goes to show - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing... Both of our cars have a manual transmission. Next time around I might go auto.

Stella! Becky! Woo hoo! I might post on Stella's page so she is more likely to see it before she goes...

Cyn you were a firecat in your youth!! Did your hubby say something really mean or did you just throw a tantrum (Just wondering how much you've mellowed - hehe)

Suzy - that could be the case now for all I know. Also the rules in each state are different. My last experience with learner drivers was when my kids learnt 20 yrs ago and I insisted they both learn in a manual.
But, in all my years of driving, today was the very first day that I ever faced the problem of not being able to go out and the only car available to me was a manual. So I've been lucky.

Today's update...

The younger brother was partying in a small town about half an hour away. One of his friends knew exactly where he was and didn't say - this idiot's mother is a cop so you'd think he'd know better!!

The young man didn't get his new bank account or medicare card today because he spent all of his time trying to find youth accomodation so he wouldn't be a burden on us. He was given 6 days worth of food and a $20 voucher at IGA so feels like he is contributing something to the household. Hopefully he will stop worrying now. Next time I go to the doctor's office I will definitely be putting something in the donation box they have there!! I've also offered him driving lessons in exchange for cleaning the cars. He said he would give us petrol money, I said I'd prefer to have the cars cleaned!!

Warning - another boss story!
The 'Dead Cow' boss used to have an auto Commodore and once, one of the young men was up from head Office in Sydney and my boss asked me to take him across to the construction site of our new office, over the then-new Gateway Bridge. The Sydney guy says to me 'Cynth, how fast can we get this thing to go over the bridge'. I always accept a challenge and so we were low-flying at 140kph over the bridge, both ways. He told my boss when we got back. When my boss replaced his company car a few weeks later, he bought a manual!!

Ebob is giving the young man a lesson in cooking spaghetti tonight. He supplied the ingredients with his voucher.

There is a huge youth homeless problem here, mostly related to drugs, but sometimes it's situations like the young man's. The waiting list for youth accomodation will be long. He has appointments this week so we'll see what happens. I hope he hangs around long enough to learn some cooking skills first...

Rolanda, my heart goes out to you in this struggle with your mum.
Suzy, that young man sounds like a nice young man who doesn't want to be a burden on you.... why on earth did his parents kick him out.
Cyn, we have the same restrictions over here on driving, if you learn and pass your driving test on an automatic then that is all you are allowed to drive. If you pass on a manual then you can drive either manual or auto.
Stella automatic cars are still not that popular over here (and Ireland) they are a lot more expensive, hire companies do not have that many of them because demand isn't too high either. You will soon get used to driving on the 'correct' side of the road and changing gear with the stick on the opposite side to you are used to will come naturally. I had the same worries when driving in Canada and Florida but it was easy. You will have to make sure you know some of the rules over here as they are quite different to America especially at traffic lights.

Stella, you should be able to pick up pay as you go phones and sim cards easily when you get to Ireland. If you are bringing a laptop it might be cheaper to use skype for telephone calls home. You could set that up before you leave. If you open an account you will get cheap calls to any landline.

Rolanda - I think the elderly etc can only be put in care/respite against their will if it is proved that they are a danger to themselves at home - as was the case with my parents. And the decision just HAD to be made there and then.
Suzy - you are so kind, teaching that young lad the life skills he will need out on his own - something his parents ought to have been teaching him as he got older. Where are some people's heads these days - don't say it, I know - but I'll be polite and say not focused on what they should be, that's for sure. Hey, don't forget to teach him to iron a shirt - learn that and you can iron anything!

Morning everyone.

Rolanda, I know exactly how you feel! We ended up having to go through mom's doctor who agreed she could no longer live on her own. What a time! I would not want to go through that again; it was a very painful time for all of us.

Healing thoughts flying out to your friend, June.

Great that the two missing boys are home. Full marks to you and your boarder Suzy.
Hope Collin is soon better.
Rolanda, very hard decision with your Mother. My Mother was much the same. Living in an old very large house on 230 acres of land, getting around with a walker. it was an hours drive for me and another sister. The other sister who lived nearby did very little other than taking her shopping. Two of us would try and do her house work, house repairs, check the cattle and the farm. Cut the lawns on her acre of garden etc. etc.
Sorry to say I can offer no easy solution unless you can make her feel guilty with what she is putting you all through.(and that it is detrimental to your health)

Everybody.
I love hearing the sounds of power tools and hammers over my head. The men are really busy on the roof. It has been so hot here lately ( yesterday it hit 98℉ / 36.6℃, with a heat index of over 110℉!!! ) that they work like maniacs early in the morning.

Suzy.... it sounds like the younger brother, and his friends, are lacking in brains. I'm relieved that he's OK, but geez, you'd think that he would know that someone would freak if he vanished for days. Apparently there were only a limited number of brain cells available in that family, and his older brother got 'em all. His friend, who knew what was going on and didn't tell anybody..... .... just wow.

Heidi, hope your headache is better ... I tend to get sinus headaches when it's really humid out. Good luck with your epidural tomorrow.

Just had an up close and personal contact with an earwig while I was outside on a coffee break. Yuck, I hate those disgusting bugs!

Good luck with your therapy, MizT.

Suzy, the younger brother sounds like he should be seriously grounded for pulling such a stunt ... having so many people worried about him.

Well, back to work for me. TTFN

My headache IS better. Thanks for asking, Theresa.

I've had a busy-ish day so far. I had to run up to the main PO hub in the next county to pick up 5 peafowl chicks. When I got back, Robert was just starting off on the tractor to mow some pastures. He didn't get far. The mower stopped cutting, so I had to figure out why. The belt on the finish mower broke. It'll take a while to get it fixed because my trailer is in use for the sunroom project. I want to take it into the dealership instead of just replacing the belt because I'd like to have them sharpen the blades and check the oil in the motor.

Tami, you are a troublemaker! Wish I'd been here to chat with you!!

Heidi, I'm glad your headache is better. I hope tomorrow's injection is a really bad one! How late do the guys keep working on the roof before it gets too hot?

Theresa, I'm going to have to google earwig. It's one of those things I used to know but has leaked out of my brain.... The younger brother may be grounded, we don't know. I doubt it would keep him home though.

MizT, sorry to hear your hand kept you awake. I hope the therapy and exercises start to give permanent help very very soon.

Cyn, I've asked the teenagers who have just read the books and done the tests and they tell me that if you get your license on an automatic you can drive a manual once you are on your green Ps. So less than 3 years. So you should learn so the next time you need to drive a manual (you've had your license for about 15 year haven't you hehe so about 15 years from now) you'll know how...

Empty house!

Theresa, I can't watch videos right now - sob. I keep thinking I'll watch them when my connection improves but there is no way I'll be able to remember what I said I'd watch. No brain you see....

The young man has an appointment over town this morning so I looked at him sternly and said - while you're here the same rules apply as for my kids, if my kids had an appointment I'd be picking them up. He looked so uncomfortable but it also means I can help him with his bank account application.

Suzy, you are finally giving him the structure I don't think he ever had. He will realize it someday and I am sure he will thank you for it, even if you never hear him. Keep up the great work.
I was able to read the posts this morning but could not click on more nor could I see who the posts were from. I could see the avatars and figured out who most people were from the picture and post. I found a site that circumnavigates around the firewall. It will work until the higher ups find out and block it. At least it kept me from being completely bored today.

good afternoon, all. I just did arrive home this afternoon before a thunder storm. We needed the rain, it cooled down the house, and I am so glad i was home and did not have to drive in it.

Saw a different therapist today, regular one is on vacation. This lady did a bit of "encouraging" thumb to bend, Something Ashley has not done before. She told me I can do this at home now, bending thumb with other hand just near the "ouch" point and hold for 5 seconds. She also said I could go to 15 of each exercise, and if it did not leave me hurting, continue with that. Fine with me, lets get this thing moving. she did tell me there are a couple of exercises I will never be able to do as pictured. The goal is to get as much movement as I can, but do not expect to touch my thumb to palm under my little finger, ain't gonna happen. Another something doc did not bother to tell me before surgery. I asked if it would return to normal function, he said yes. Maybe his definition of normal and mine is not the same???

Suzy, will nothing happen to your young man's parents for forcing him to leave home? here, they could face charges of child endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and others. A parent must provide for a child until 18, unless the courts intervene and the state takes custody.

I think I shall make baked spaghetti tonight with left over sauce. a bit like lasagna, with cottage, ricotta and Parmesan cheese layered in with spaghetti pasta and sauce. yummy.

later, hugs to all.

MizT, the rules are different here. Kids can leave home at 16, it might even be 15, and apply for government assistance. It takes away some of the power parents have to bring their kids in line, though parents are supposed to have to say the kids can't come home before they will qualify for stuff, there are ways around that too.

Morning all.

Driving. I am under the impression that if you hold a Automatic Licence than you can not drive a Manuel. if you hold a Manuel, you can drive both the Manuel and Automatic. Both my boys learnt to drive Manuels. Both Hubby and I learnt in the Manuel ( mind you in the 'Dark Ages', all you could get was Manuel, there weren't too many Automatics around). We both now drive Autom these days, and have done so since the 'Middle Ages'!
