The BOM website site says it is 43 degrees which means it is probably 46 at my back door...cement paving...Lachie burnt the soles of his feet going outside without shoes and is limping...

Air con is struggling and doesn't feel like it is even on!! All we need now is a blackout from the excessive drain on the supply...I'm not really being pessimistic but seems to be the way of it at times... The hottest place in the state currently is Penola at 45 so it is going to get even hotter here for a while

Hello everyone!
Bean where is Penola? The only one I can find is in SA. Wherever it is, I'm glad I'm not there! Also very, very glad that we have new air-conditioning - making life bearable!

Bean, I just had a look at the BOM website for current temps around Victoria - there is so little difference between them! It's HOT everywhere!!!!!!! It's about 43C where Mum is (109F)...She has visitors taking advantage of her air conditioning, even though it is a little bit like yours..

I just went to look at the online version of our local paper so I could see what the front page story was. Why? Because on the way home today I stopped to buy the kids a drink and a doughnut to celebrate Ally making it through her first day and 2 'young men' (I use the term loosely) were bragging to the girl behind the counter that they had made the front page. Seemed very proud of themselves too....

And the story is...
PUNCH DRUNK - Teenage violence puts tourist trade at risk in coastal villages
AUSTRALIA Day celebrations turned ugly in two outlying villages when teenagers mixed alcohol with violence.

Luckily the towns mentioned are more than 30 minutes drive away.

Sorry Suzy, got side-tracked! I don't know what the temp is here - one site says 40C, one says 46C! (that can't be right, surely?) All I know is IT'S HOT!!

Can anyone remember how long Heidi said her return trip would take? She has been gone about 5.5 hours now. With the weather the way it is it's a bit of a worry - especially since the plane might not be able to land anyway!!!

Suzy, that story about the "young men" is incredibly sad! Things just seem to keep getting worse in that respect.
On a more cheerful note, how did Ally enjoy her first day of high school? Sounds as if she took it pretty much in her stride. Are there kids she knows there, or is it a whole new world? Best of luck to her either way! :)

There are kids she knows there Judy, but none of them are in her class. She seems to be totally confused - and having a ball! Tomorrow will be more crowded as years 8-10 go back. I'm told it's not a good day for year 7.

Oh well, at least she's had that day of getting to know people and the school. I remember when my kids started high school they were pretty much segregated for a while: a separate wing, separate play area, etc. They all look so little next to the other kids, but they soon get cheeky! ;)

I just had to race up the street to pick up some medicine for Rob - stepping out of here was like stepping into a furnace! Holy cow! And the medicine has to be kept cold, so I had a cooler bag with ice in it - felt like crawling inside it! And the car! Hot seatbelt (ouch!), hot seat (ouch!!) Hot, hot, hot!!

Judy - ouch!

They have separate areas all the way up to Year 12 at this school. There used to be a 'common area' but they dismantled it last year because there were too many fights - mostly year 7 students!!

Hi Brenda, it's not too bad here, only 30C. Still uncomfortable if you actually do anything, but I don't dare complain today....

I don't think I was totally clear above - all years have classes in the same buildings, and roll call classes are mixed. That was clear as mud! There is a science block, a technology block, a math block etc etc. So a block could have kids from years 7 through 12 in it all at the same time. Time outside of class, however, is segregated.

they must have a lot of outside space for them to be able to segregate like that.

Brenda, Australia has much more space than crowded England. Most of our schools do have fairly extensive grounds around them. Sydney has also had a very nice very pleasant day. Getting warmer over the next couple of days though.

Hi June, how is Ken's leg?
I realise that the space in Australia is better than here, but cannot see why the kids should be segregated during break. surely the year groups will never learn to get on if they are not allowed to mix during the school day.

Like June said Brenda. I just looked at Google Earth and did some quick calcs. If I haven't totally messed them up, the school covers about 4 hectares/10 acres. That's including parking, buidling, fields etc. The kids aren't allowed to run wild over all of that.

When mine were at school I think it was mainly during lunch time that the different ages had different areas. Other times they were more in a common area. Activities like sport, choir, etc will have particpation of different age groups combined in the same activity.
Although I have two teachers in the family I am a bit behind in some of the things they do.

I thought maybe the same Suzy. But a lot of bullying is from their peers!
