Good morning/evening all. The kids are gone for the morning and hubby is getting ready to go to work. I will have a semi-quiet morning with my coffee and pooter. I have some work to do later, just have to fully wake up first.

SUZY, good question there. Yes, good Night usually implies leaving, good bye. I had not thought about that before. I think I would go with Good Evening, or the more generic Hello, HI, or Greetings.

Nice to chat with Suzy and Rolanda on MSN for a bit, been a long time.

I looked up Heidi's weather, they stayed at 5C or 41F overnight, that is a more normal low for this time of year. Should melt ice and snow, and help with roads and working conditions for the power companies. There are still so very many without power, and power companies always work in the more populated areas first. that gets power back to the most people fastest. Those like Heidi, who are living long distances apart, are lower on priorities list.

Here where I live, we are a low priority, except we are very near a water pumping station, for drinking water delivery. THEY are a #1 priority, and during our inland hurricane several years ago, a truck and crew were stationed at the pumping station. When the eye of hurricane went over us power was restored for them and that restored for us. Where many were without power for days, we were without power for 45 minutes! We were lucky! If damage had been closer to our homes, we would have been without also!

I hope temperatures are moderating in all areas! My best cooling thoughts to those who are sweltering. My best warming thoughts to those who are wishing for warmth, especially Heidi! I hope all is going well for her and her animals!

HEIDI REPORT!

I just spoke with Heidi by phone, we had a nice conversation today. They have a fire in fireplace, she said it took her 2 days to get that damper to move, but they have had a nice fire going and a source of firewood. Yesterday they got a generator, and are running one electric space heater on that. With warmer temps outside, they have got inside up to the 60's today.

Still no water, they have a well on the farm, and the generator will not run the pump and the heater. They are going to Hardie's (local fast food) once a day for food. Other than that, oranges and other snack food they had on hand. She is going to plug her electric can opener into the generator to open a few things, she does not have a manual can opener (do you?)

They lost many animals, and I hope I got the list right, One of the older dogs, 3 lambs, most of her fish, One of the new finches, and other birds. I think I remember chickens and pigeons.

Some people in their area are beginning to get power now. She said hers would be a while, because the lines from road to their house (remember, they are a distance from the road) is on the ground and a pole is down.

Said has not had a complete nights sleep yet, having to get up to watch the fire in fireplace. Said she is keeping someone in the house at all times to watch the fire and now the generator.

they also lost phone service since we had talked last and just got that restored last night.
she said they get a news of what is happening from the newspaper, they are still getting that.

Death tole in Kentucky is high and might go higher as a door to door check is being made by National Guard. People dying from generator fumes, from bringing BBQ grills inside for warmth, from unvented propane heaters and some people have frozen to death. How terribly sad.

Join me in wishing that the next storm misses them, another is expected tomorrow, but looks like it could go east of them. this one also has the possibility of freezing rain and ice. A second storm would add insult to injury for them for sure.

She did say there is hope they get power back in another 2 days. I really hope they do, Heidi sounded tired.

Morning all!
Thank you Tricia! So good to hear she is okay. Very sad about the animals though. I am joining you in wishing and hoping that the next storm misses them. That would put their 2 days hopes on hold.

Who would have thought about a can opener? We only have manual ones so would have been fine, but if we didn't it's not something I would have thought about.

Empty house! But only for about an hour, or less. Hubby is staying home today. Two reasons - one is the superbowl, the other is dumbness! He took Ebob to baseball yesterday and made her put on plenty of sunscreen. He then left it in the car 200 yards from the game. That was apparently too far to walk to get it for himself, though he said by the time he realised it was too late anyway. It hurts to wear a robe, and to bend his legs to put shoes on! The burn is only his knees to his shorts line, but it is BAD. He has to go to work to put last week's time sheet in and to ask for a flexi today (says it's a bit weird to take a sickie for a sunburn!), but then he's home again.

Good morning everyone.
I think 'Max' is Stella's son Ian.
Thanks for the update on Heidi. What a nightmare for her. I had an electric can opener once, but much prefer a good manual one.
I am sure a chisel and hammer would have slowly got a can open. Keep banging holes around the rim.

Don't do that to me MizT!!!

Susan 24.6/76, 61% humidity
June 24.5/76, 76% humidity (couldn't find a really close one for June so went with Olympic Park)

Alabama looks lovely and mild 16-19C
8-17C for Kentucky. Those temps are survivable even without heating. Yay!! Not that I'd want to spend too long at 8C without heat...
New York is COLD! Some places below freezing.

Tricia...great to have an update on Heidi.
Suzi...which site do you use? I've been watching the radar gaging when to bring the washing in...isn't it meant to rain when you have washing on the line? Doesn't seem to be working...it is by passing us!! Doesn't look like much in the way of showers..very light. Humidity shocking but good for the fires.
Hi Rola...don't send anymore of that weather this way!!!

I don't have any more space for gadgets. Manual opener that fits in the drawer is fine by me! We had an electric one in the States, but mostly used our manual one.

fellow SA7ers

Heidi, so sorry about your animals, too sad.
Sending 'No Storm' vibes your way, I think you have had enough.

I have also had an electric can opener...stupidest thing in the world! I have a Tupperware manual can opener, it was expensive to buy, but opens cans with no sharp edges, neither on the can or the lid! Best invention ever!

Today I have to get this room organised - or re-organised. When Mum came I turned it residential, now I have to turn it back to business... tutoring starts this week.

Hehe Gail, my kids asked for that, then groaned at me when I did it!

Bean, I use lots of sites, but mostly BOM for current temps... When my connection is zipping along I can check out a bunch of them in just a few mins with the help of favourites. I like the radar too, but it doesn't help to keep my clothes dry!
