Checking in without reading. Not sure how long I can manage to stay here, as today I spent over 3 hours in my power chair, playing scrabble. Big mistake, having leg bent and chair edge running right across that inflamed nerve. I had been keeping leg straight, elevated, in recliner and thought leg/hip, knee was much better. nope, just not using it so not much chance for pain. Screaming at me now, bummer and although it is after 11 pm, with pain meds and sleeping meds taken, no pain relief and not sleepy.

Tomorrow 4:30 pm at last is my scheduled MRI, but that does nothing for the pain, will be another 2 weeks probably, until they can schedule epidural, IF that is what doc decides to do for treatment..

I will most likely be changing current pain for headache after the epidural, but I do need to walk in my apartment, so many things do not get done if I do not do them. Now I could not have made it without Vicky, my house cleaner, but only so much she can do in 2 hours, especially with laundry being a high priority.

I am sad today, one of our newer residents I had made friends with recently had a minor stroke, no longer able to knit and crochet which she loves, and she was making me a triangle shawl. Yesterday she got more bad news, stage 1 or 2 breast cancer. She was not handling it well at all today. more tests needed, lots of things to decide. I listened for as long as I could stay before my leg was complaining, DRATS, hate when it gets in the way of helping.

Enough for tonight, back to recliner for me, but did wnt to check in, let you know I was still alive and kicking, just not kicking so high at the moment. Hugs to each of you, with extras, till next time.

Just a quick one. Col was released from the hospital today and is home. I'm his nurse, 3 different eye drops - one 6 times a day, on is 4 times per day and the other 2 times daily. Plus antibiotics and much hygeine required. I can't risk passing on an infection.
We will get used to our new way of life. He's having trouble walking and balancing without depth perception.

Our grandson said to him tonight, 'Why do bad things happen to good people?' Why indeed?
But we have to be philosophical and think that the incredible bad luck that caused him such an injury also became good luck because his good driving skills meant that no one else was harmed and no damage was done on that busy highway..

Thank you all for the welcome. I really can't join in discussions much or regularly. But On your invitation I will spill some details.

My husband's job was unexpectedly eliminated so we are trying to develop a cash flow from the sideline art business we have been building for future 'retirement.' I have a lot of computer stuff to do with computer problems slowing me down. Not to mention not knowing how to go about doing some of the things I have a creative idea to do. It's a steep learning curve sometimes, but then again all my life I've been that person who has to chase down ways of building foundations under the castles in the air. It's nothing I'm not used to.

My back is healing from fracturing my L2 when I fell in December. Just a little pain left when I twist or shift sideways. I am doing physical therapy for the meniscus I tore same time and they tell me the back pain is probably muscular from overcompensating. We will see how PT helps my knee and back.

There have been a lot of details getting my youngest daughter (a/k/a Skye or Little Plum) ready to go to Norway as a 4-H International exchange delegate. She still has a lot of money to raise. She has medical allergy and digestion issues we are trying to find help for to make her travel safer and more convenient.

Plus it's just a lot of extra work trying to do everything on the super cheap. We are getting a lot of good from a surplus food ministry but it takes creative cooking to make varied and balanced meals from the disparate elements.

On top of all that the sadness of another funeral in the huge extended family I married into. To see my husband's beloved uncle grieving from yet another lost family member has been rough.

My best to you all. CynB, my best wishes to you and Col. MizTricia, hope you find relief for that pain. Julie, I wish I could hear you play in concert some time. If I have an opportimity while I'm the Chicagoland area sometime I will message you to see if you have anything going on. The rest of you, hang in there. You are so good how you hold each other up.

It sounds like you aren't too far from our Julie, Plum. She isn't far from Chicago.

Good luck with the back and knee. I'm gladyou got proper treatment after fracturing the vertibrae. When I broke mine (3 vertabrae), my mother decided that I was just bruised up and refused to take me to the hospital or doctor. I have been in pain ever since. I hope prompt care prevents that.

Off to Louisville with Daisy to learn the results of the tests, and hopefully start treatment for whatever she has. I'm praying that it's Addison's Disease, the only treatable option they mentioned.

Thanks, Heidi. Yes, Julie and I have already met in person a couple years ago when Jane was in Chicago.

I had kyphoplasty where they hammered a needle in through a transverse process and injected a cement to stabilize the vertebra where it was broken. They diagnosed me with osteopenia so I have a heads up to try to slow or halt the progression to osteoporosis.

I'm not sure yet about my knee. They say things are too loose and then they want me to do 'stretching' exercises! Seems counter-intuitive, but if it works I'll be ecstatic. It certainly does feel good to be using my muscles again instead of babying them.

Back from the Veterinary Specialists. Bad news. Daisy has intestinal lymphoma. Cancer. She has only 2 months left, at best. And that's with prednisone to inhibit the cancer and help her appetite. I won't put her through surgery and/or chemo. They say that could buy her at the most 6 months, and that would be 6 months of pain and discomfort. Better 2 months with a quality of life.

Oh Heidi, sorry to hear the diagnosis on Daisy. I think you have made the right decision about treatment. But it is sad. Hugs to you and your 2 sick dogs.
Plum, it sounds like your life is busy. I hope you get everything sorted to your satisfaction. And thanks for the best wishes to Col. He needs all he can get.
MizT, thinking of you as you deal with this pain. And don't kick too high at the moment, sit in that recliner.
That's where Col is, he slept most of the night in his recliner. Said it was more comfy than his bed with 3 pillows to raise his head.

CynB, my thought are with you and Col! Thinking positively that Col's injury doesn't result in the worst possible outcome and that an amazing ophthalmologist can improve Col's odds. I can't imagine what it must have been like for him to be required to stay with the truck until a replacement driver arrived. He should have been rushed to the hospital. Of course, if hospitals there are like they are here, there wouldn't have been an ophthalmologist in the hospital at the time and one would need to be called in, so maybe any delay in treatment was inevitable. Hubby's ophthalmologist had been talking about him needing a corneal transplant, which are apparently relatively common, at least in the Chicago area. Sending {{{HUGS}}} to both you and Col! If the accident prevents him from returning to work, is there good Workers' Compensation or disability there?

I'm hoping that parking at the hospital is not by the hour! It's nice to have big hospitals that can entice some of the best doctors, but parking can be a real headache! Speaking of headaches, I hope Col isn't in a great deal of pain. Hoping for all the best for him and you as he recovers! Miracles can happen!

Heidi, I'm so sorry Patch has reached this point. It's great that he knows how to let you know when he needs help. We're here for you, if we can be of any support. Sending {{{HUGS}}} I hope Daisy is eating a bit more each day! You certainly have your hands full.

Suzy, how are you doing? Do you and Dana have a chance to all or text most days? Do you have Skype or FaceTime so you can chat with your grandies? I hope all is well.

Thinking of MIzT, and hoping her appointment (tomorrow, I think) brings some relief from the ongoing pain. Sending {{{HUGS}}}, MizT.

I can't believe it; I just lost a LONG comment! Leet's see if I can pull some of it back together.

MizT, I hope your MRI appointment goes well tomorrow and provides your doctor with the necessary information to develop a good plan of action to provide some pain relief for you - and SOON! What a shame that the time spent with friends playing Scrabble added to the pain. I'm also sorry to hear that the newer resident you had befriended has now received such a tough diagnosis. I hope she has family in the area who can help her with decision making and treatment appointments.

CynB, hooray for Col being released from the hospital. I suspect he will get more rest and recover more quickly at home. Of course, you will have your hands full providing him with the care he needs, but you will be able to take your time and provide extra care that a nurse might not be able to provide (if they're as overworked in your hospitals as they are here). The number of drops required per day reminds me of what my hubby needed after cataract surgery. He was also given a perforated aluminum patch (with fabric around the edges) to wear when sleeping or having a shampoo or shower, which he couldn't do for the first week or two after surgery. Hubby's ophthalmologist has been saying that hubby may need a cornea transplant in the next year or so. Since Col is having a few balance issues without depth perception, would he be more comfortable walking with a cane or walker? (I know - that's a silly question. He's a man. I just thought I'd make that suggestion in case it might help.)

I'll keep trying to remember what was in the post I lost, but will post this much now, so I don't run the risk of losing it again.

Hi, Plum! It's nice to see you here again! You and your family certainly have a lot to deal with. I'm sorry to hear that your hubby's job was suddenly and unexpectedly eliminated. Was he given any kind of severance package? I remember you once shared a website that included photos of some wonderful art pieces. I remember being quite impressed. I hope that sideline will help to provide some income between jobs. I also hope all of the computer work that lies ahead comes together as you hope. Seems like you'll be quite busy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your fall and resultant L2 fracture and torn meniscus. I hope your PT is helping to provide some pain relief!

Plum, how wonderful that your youngest daughter will be going to Norway as a 4-H International exchange delegate! How long will she be there? Wishing her good luck with her fund raising, as well as hoping that you and she can sort out her medical allergy and digestion issues so that she can readily enjoy her time in Norway!

Will be keeping you and your family in my thoughts in the coming days and weeks and wish you luck that everything will come together successfully!

Plum, how kind of you to remember that I am taking cello lessons. I wish I had more confidence in my ability. Just as you face a steep learning curve getting the computer to do the things you want it to do, there is also a steep learning curve to playing the cello (or probably any musical instrument). I started lessons with the hope that I would be able to play chamber music and in a string orchestra. I am doing both (not exceptionally well, as the music is very close to the upper limits of what I'm capable of playing currently) and it takes a good bit of practicing. The music is not particularly recognizable, as the cello usually provides the bass line or pulse or beat that helps to keep the upper strings rhythmically together. Much of what I learn and play in my lesson is scales and studies, so also not particularly recognizable. I have worked on a few movements from one of the Bach Suites, though. At my lesson this week, my teacher gave me the option of what to study next, either 3 pieces by Paul Hindemith (a 20th century German composer) or 'Nina' an aria by Pergolesi. I haven't made that decision yet.

And now, I think I have reproduced much of the comment that I lost, so I hope to get to bed relatively soon.

I'm sending MUCH healing energy, prayers, warm and gentle {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, positive thoughts, and to Everyone! May the rest of your day or evening or night be pleasant and enjoyable!

These aren't my words,
but I agree with them

Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without writing a word, maybe this could explain:

When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward jokes.

When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes.

When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you forward jokes.

And to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important, you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what you get?

A forwarded joke.

So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.

The MRI went very well, as some of you saw on FB post. Upright open MRI is the only way to go if anyone has trouble lying on their back on a hard surface. I was sitting in a chair, with machine close around the back and side of me, but totally open in front and above me. Not nearly as noisy as previous versions of MRI either. Most trouble I had was climbing up the steep 2 steps to get to the seat. I was cosizly and comfortably warm on arms and back from the machines heat, and with a fan blowing toward my face, it reminded me of enjoying lying in the sun on a cool breezy day. I dosed through part of the test, that comfy.

It will be till Wednesday before doc gets report, longer till they decide what to do, then send in request to insurance for per-approval, so still a while fore anything is done, I am thinking 2 weeks minimum, DRATS. . I am thinking of trying to get appointment with an orthopedic doc I have sen in the past. He believes in immediate injections to the hurting areas, NOT the epidural, but in my case perhaps into knee or hip or both, for pain relief till pain clinic can get around to treatment. Just hope they consider me a returning patient, saw him many years ago, and not a new patient. always takes extra time to see new patient. I really need something done NOW, this continuing pain is getting me down.

Cyn, I agree with Julie, about Col having to wait for relief driver before leaving by ambulance for hospital. My take on the ophthalmologist getting there, the sooner they knew the need, sooner Col was in ER, the sooner the specialist would arrive. I know he must have been in tremendous pain waiting, so unfair, and poor medical practice to expect that of him. OK, off my soap box for now.

TONIGHT I AM SLEEPING IN FITS AND STARTS, CANNOT STAY ASLEEP NO MATTER HOW MUCH I AM MEDICATED. forgive caps. I am not screaming at you. but I am making so many errors I should get off and back to bed, hopefully to sleep. Hugs to each of you, till next time. Damn this knee pain and inability to bend knee,

Morning all, Col had a good night, he's sleeping well and often, good for healing the body. Yesterday was bad, the full force of what has happened finally got to us. Today, I have renewed resolve to get him and us through this and learn to cope.
To everyone worried about Col not being taken by ambulance, it was not completely evident at first that this injury was so bad. He told them he'd wait to be picked up. He even took a selfie of the eye and it looked okay. He's an 'it'll be alright' type of guy. So it was 2 hours before he even got looked at, and that was at a regional hospital without an opthalmic department. His boss drove him the 30kms or so to the big hospital near the CBD in Brisbane because it was a 3 hour wait for a transfer ambulance. Truly, our health system is badly flawed. We sat around most of the day and we could see that they were so understaffed. The staff would be dealing with us and other patients at the same time. It was a public hospital. We have private insurance and had I been there at the regional hospital I would have asked for a referral to a private hospital. We will hopefully amend that on Monday because Col's employers, in conjunction with Workcover (we meet up with them all then) are prepared to cover the costs plus any other incidental costs - pharmaceutical, travel etc.

Julie - I have always liked the cello, but I chose to play flute in school and was rarely around the strings as band and strings had separate classrooms and only gave a combined concert once a year. I always mentally associate the cello with a cellist I went to school with, Lynn Peithman, who went on to major in music and has been with the Nashville Orchestra for decades.

About 10 years ago I went to a local college concert and heard a cello solo performance of the Schelomo concerto. It blew my mind. It's supposed to be performed with an orchestral background but even all by itself it was hauntingly beautiful.

Keep developing your interest. I enjoy even a simple scale played on a resonant instrument. It's like getting a back rub: Don't stop. Please don't stop. Oh, that's lovely. lol

Greetings to all!

DOrA, I really like the comment you shared. It made me think about a friend from high school who has VERY different political and world views from me. I often cringe when I see a post from her on facebook - or her response to one of my posts. She sends or forwards multiple emails a day (sometimes jokes or funny stories), but recently I have been deleting without reading. Maybe I should give her another chance. I hesitate to encourage her, for fear of receiving even more emails, as I'm trying to reduce the amount I receive.

MizT, the upright open MRI sounds like a great innovation for those who have back issues or claustrophobia. I can't imagine being relaxed enough to doze through part of the procedure. Now, if only there would be a way to speed up the reading of the films and determination of the best course of action to provide some relief for you. Trying to see the orthopedic doctor you had seen previously may give you some relief in the meantime. The worst that could happen is probably that they would regard you as a new patient and be unable to see you before you see the doctor in the pain clinic.

Cyn, most of our local hospitals here don't have an ophthalmic department and would need to call in an ophthalmologist or transfer a patient as well. Perhaps one of the bigger teaching hospitals might have someone on call, but it's very unlikely an ophthalmologist would be in hospital. So, I'm guessing that's fairly standard procedure. Again, I'll say that I'm glad Col is at home and in good hands! I hope the meeting on Monday goes well and you get some questions and concerns answered. I hope Col is comfortable and continues to be able to sleep well!

Hi, Plum! That's amazing that you played the flute. I started flute in 6th grade and had lessons for 3 years, but continued to play through high school - and even played in the 'fun' band (mostly music majors on a minor instrument) in college. I played flute because an older cousin did, and her flute was still available, and our small town only had band - no strings or orchestra. Our daughters both started on violin & I tried to learn along with them for the first year, until they asked me to quit because I was holding them back. As they got older, one switched to viola, and the other to cello. I had been interested in cello lessons for many years and finally talked the cello teacher into taking me as an adult student 6 years ago. About 2 years ago she passed, and I'm now studying with one of her former students who is about 25 or 26, I think. I'm enjoying the journey!

Heidi, I hope you are doing well and continue to think positive thoughts for Patch and Daisy.

Sending {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, healing energy, , positive thoughts, and prayers for everyone!

Heidi, I’m so sorry to hear about Daisy! I would have made the same decision you did. If they thought they could cure it, it might be different. But maybe not even then.

Cyn, we have an ophthalmologist locally, but I’m not sure if he works out of the public hospital. He did laser surgery on Don’s eye when he got hit by a rock mowing the lawn, but in his office. I drove Alie from the public to the private hospital when she broke her arm, they offered an ambulance for that, but they wanted us to drive to Wollongong public. I think we’re back to having an ortho at the public hospital now. For a while there they didn’t last long before they moved on. It’s weird that I understand how hard it is being a carer, and I’m imagining how tired you are, but at the same time, I’m jealous.

Greetings friends. This is the place I feel safe to come and b*tch and moan, so be forewarned, that is what follows.

My pain and sleep medication is not working 2 hours after taking it. My left back, hip, leg, knee is screaming at me, and when I went to bed, right hip was joining in after only 30 min in bed. I thought just because I was misusing r hip, taking pressure off the left, but I find a pain trail from back to hip, thigh, knee just like left leg, just not as severe at the moment. AAAGGGGH, I cannot have both of them acting up, will not be able to walk at all, or even get from recliner to power chair, bummer.

As I mentioned earlier, my 3 1/2 hours in power chair to play scrabble Thursday was a poor choice, I now know. Add the getting into and out of taxi twice, forcing knee to bend far more than it was happy with, walking to and from taxi twice, then the hour sitting with knee bend and not moving even a fraction of an inch ( did not want to have to repeat the test cause it was blurry from a move) and pain has just kept going up and up. Another 2 hours fore more meds, and I cannot go take extra, not ordered medication, so I am stuck trying to tough it out.

Funny how I kept dozing off when waiting for bedtime meds, but now I have taken them, wide awake.

I have had to be creative, getting a full cup of hot coffee or warm milk, or a meal from kitchen to recliner. No holding it and supporting mysellllf on my walker. Thankfully there is a psss through from kitchen to the dining area of the living area. I can put food or drink on the ledge, go around using walked, then move food down to the dining table that is adjacent to my recliner. I moved the table about 2 inches from the wall, so food is within reach from recliner, thought I had everything e=covered, but tonight I wanted hot coffee here at computer, hoping hot coffee would help the meds to work. It has in the past. I founnd my insulated coffee cup with a well fitting screw on top, poured my coffee into that, but since I prefer coffee from a ceramic mug, brought along the mug and poured coffee into that. what is just one more dirty cup, since I always have something in the sink needing washing. I cannot always stay there until dishes are finished. Hard to walk away from unfinished chore, but I have learned, it is much better than staying even the couple of minuets more once an ouhie place says 'NO MORE'.

Heidi, I am glad daisy was feeling well enough to eat a bit and play with the other dogs. giving her the best days possible at end of life is what it is all about. Way to go, Daisy.

Getting a bit sleepy, hope the hurt once back in bed does now=t wake me. Huge hugs to each of you, with extras, till later. Thanks for reading if you got this far, I appreciate it. Just being able to write it has helped me.

Topsiders not on fb May not now our latest political drama. Your VP won’t be alone with a woman who isn’t his wife. Our VP could learn something from him. He cheated on his wife and 4 kids with a woman who worked for him, and got her pregnant. It wouldn’t be such big news but he campaigned against same sex marriage by vigorously suggesting traditional marriage was the only way to really be married, while having an affair, and accepting free accommodation from a political donor he could shack up with her.

It sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can to help yourself! Sending very gentle {{{HUGS}}} and lots of positive thoughts and healing energy! I hope a good night's sleep was eventually yours!

Suzy, I just found out about the pregnancy caused by the Aussie VP's philandering. However, thinking he might learn something from our VP is not going to work. Ours has an extremely weird relationship with his wife, who he calls 'Mother.' Much of what he stands for is unusual. What is wrong with politicians who think that laws and decency do NOT apply to them?

Suzy and Julie, Yes, I did get to sleep, around 2 am, and slept past 10 this morning. A good 8 hours, just at a different time from the normal world. Might be headed for another late night/early morning sleep, once again. YEP, Julie, I am doing everything I can, including heat and ice, topical rubs, keeping that leg elevated, limiting my time in any chair that requires bending knee. I do have periods of a lot less pain, but I seem to forget that then it is really hurting.

I am off to try the bed, wish me luck getting comfy and to sleep. Huge hugs to each of you, and extra to Heidi and Patch. I hope his passing is quick and peaceful.

Julie, a past president also called his wife mother, I just can’t remember which one. I agree that pence is weird though. The only thing he has going for him is not cheating on his wife. Actually, I’ve always been suspicious that his rule about not being alone with a woman has to do with a previous ‘indiscretion’. Her requirement for staying with him? His decision because he feels guilty and doesn’t trust himself not to mess up again? Cynical, maybe.

THE PERFECT HUSBAND

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: 'Hello'

WOMAN: 'Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?'

MAN: 'Yes'

WOMAN: 'I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?'

MAN: 'Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.'

WOMAN: 'I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2018 models. I saw one I really liked.'

MAN: 'How much?'

WOMAN: '$390,000'

MAN: 'OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.'

WOMAN: 'Great! Oh, and one more thing...the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $2,950,000' for it.

MAN: 'Well, then go ahead and give them an offer of $2,800,000. They will probably take it. If not, we can go the extra $150,000 if it's really a pretty good price.'

WOMAN: 'OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!'

MAN: 'Bye! I love you, too.'

The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.

He turns and asks: 'Anyone know who this phone belongs to?'

Heidi, I am so sorry about Patch. I must have been typing when you posted yesterday and didn't realize his condition had become so bad so quickly. Sending {{{HUGS}}} and I realize you haven't posted yet today, which concerns me. I hope Patch's passing will be comfortable and quick.

MizT, I'm glad you were finally able to get some sleep! I hope today has been a better day, and tonight will bring some additional relief!

Suzy, your thoughts about Pence and his decision not to be around women is interesting. It certainly seems that there is some underlying thought process or reason. I read today that on this season's Big Brother Celebrity TV show, Omarosa (previously on The Apprentice on TV and an aide in the White House) had some negative comments about Pence, indicating that he would be an even worse President. (I don't watch the show, so am relying on a news report.)

Very funny joke, DOrA! Thanks for sharing.

Thinking of everyone and sending positive thought, healing energy, [heart, {{{{{HUGS}}}}} and prayers!
