10 Quotes from Ruth Bader Ginsburg

1. About women on the court
'When I'm sometimes asked 'When will there be enough (women on the Supreme Court)?' and my answer is: 'When there are nine.' People are shocked. But there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that.'
2. About men on the court
'They have never been a 13-year-old girl.' -- After her male colleagues appeared indifferent about a girl's strip-search by school administrators
3. To new citizens at a naturalization ceremony
'We are a nation made strong by people like you.'
4. About marriage ... and work
'It helps sometimes to be a little deaf (in marriage and in) every workplace, including the good job I have now.'
5. About being a woman
'My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.'
6. About gender equality
'Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.'
7. On leadership
'Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.'
8. On dissent and justice
'Dissents speak to a future age. It's not simply to say, 'My colleagues are wrong and I would do it this way.' But the greatest dissents do become court opinions and gradually over time their views become the dominant view. So that's the dissenter's hope: that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow.'
9. On support for abortion rights
'This is something central to a woman's life, to her dignity. It's a decision that she must make for herself. And when government controls that decision for her, she's being treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for her own choices.'
10. About her legacy
'We are at last beginning to relegate to the history books the idea of the token woman.'

We didn't know much about RBG here in Australia until her death yesterday. She was obviously a strong wonderful woman and I love every one of those quotes. From what I'm reading here on social media, her death has caused as much controversary as it has sadness.

I heard from MizT today. She's being really careful because there is Covid-19 in her building. She says her health is a mess. And hurricane Sally turned east and missed her. I hope to hear more details soon since she finally remembered her password to access her email account. Her computer is down and she's using her phone only.

Oh, that is not good about Covid being in MizT's building, especially with Her health problems. I suspect it's the same over there, but here, especially in Victoria's big second wave of Covid, it became rife in their Aged Care homes and more of their casualities came from them than anywhere else. Stay safe, Tricia.
I'm glad you have heard from her though, Heidi.

Thank you so much for sharing RBG quotes for the TOPP, Heidi!

I hope Molly is making a good recovery and will settle into a less hormone-influenced life. As for you, Heidi, we hope you continue to feel better and free of fever and eventually free of ear infections!

Heidi, I'm glad you have finally heard directly from MizT. I know she's doing whatever she can to avoid COVID-19, and those in her building who have it. I'm so glad she has remembered her password and can use her email again!

Well, hubby and I have managed to add more to our lives and agenda. This is not anything huge, just adds more doctor appointments & procedures to the calendar. I had my annual mammogram last month. I was called back for more images, which led to a biopsy. Being called back is not unusual for me, and I have had a biopsy previously, so I wasn't too concerned. Pathology says it is a VERY small (about the size of a pencil eraser) malignancy. A lumpectomy is scheduled for early next month, and they'll take a few lymph nodes to check them. It will be outpatient surgery, and they are fairly sure I won't need chemo, but aren't sure about radiation until the surgery & additional pathology. They have an Interoperative Radiation Therapy machine that will administer about 20 or 25 minutes of radiation before closing, which may eliminate the need for 4 weeks of 5-day-a-week radiation. We feel this is just a small 'hiccup' in the grand scheme of things. The surgeon is very confident and reassuring and says not to read about or listen to other people's accounts of a similar diagnosis because there are so many new & improved technologies that make this a very different kind of procedure and outcome. I'll keep posting here as I have time and hope to get back here within a few days of the surgery. We're keeping our positive thoughts going.

Hope you are feeling better Heidi. thought of you the other day when I saw some photos of Gypsy Vanner foals for sale They are truly lovely animals.
Small vent: My neighbour is a vet who has 3 cats that she lets loose all day and night They were in my yard yesterday and killed a couple of rosellas. I am not too popular with her now as i have said I will get the councils cat traps if she doesn't keep them inside or in a run. Foxes have already got 2 of her chooks because she didn't bother to put them in their coop at sunset.
Hope MizT can keep well and safe.

Hi, Everyone!

I've been thinking maybe it's a good thing that hubby and I are so busy. It doesn't leave much time to sit around thinking about all the 'what ifs' that accompany the unknown.

Midge, I'm sorry to hear about your neighbor. She's not being very responsible with her own animals. I find that to be kind of contrary to what I would expect from a vet.

I hope MizT is taking all precautions and staying healthy!

Heidi, I hope you're keeping tabs on your health and avoiding over working while taking care of all of the animals! I hope Molly is settling down as she recovers!

Greetings to All! I found out at a consultation with the radiation oncologist that there might be a slight delay in the scheduled surgery, as another doctor may be involved. We'll just wait and see. We have plenty to keep us busy in the meantime.

I hope everyone is well! I was hoping MizT might find us here one of these days.

Heidi, I hope the fever is gone and your ear infections are clearing up! How is Miss Molly doing? Keeping you and all of your family (both four-legged and winged) in my thoughts. Stay healthy.

CynB, I hope you and Col are doing well as you prepare for your upcoming 'excursion.' I think getting away for a bit might be relaxing and invigorating.

Things happen in threes, don't they? I hope it only stays at three!
No1 - our ducted Air Con which is 16 years old has finally given up, so we have to replace all of it except for the ducting! This has to be done ASAP because our hot Qld summer is coming.
No2 - we have new neighbours who have two big lovely German Shepherd dogs who want to eat our little yappy Jewel, and our fence is old and those big dogs could knock it down by just lunging at it. So a new fence is required ASAP.
No3 - Col has been driving an old Ford Focus as his work car for years. It has major problems and would cost more to repair than it's worth. So another vehicle is needed there ASAP.
Whilst we are not on the bread line, this is inconvenient to say the least and will take some juggling of time and money to organise. Sigh!

CynB.... Please talk to your neighbors about the fence. Since their dogs could be as seriously impacted as your dog, they should split costs and labor on replacing the fence. They need a good fence to keep their German Shepherds contained. They need to keep them safe from being hit by cars. They need to keep them from injuring other neighbor's pets to prevent lawsuits, damages and ill will. Good fences make good neighbors. Especially since they're new neighbors, they need to start off their residence there working with the neighborhood to keep everyone happy.

CynB, I'm sorry you Col suddenly have a very large plateful of things to deal with! Heidi has a good suggestion that you ask the new neighbors to share the cost of the new fence. They and their dogs will benefit from a stronger fence!

What a horrible time for your air conditioning to need to be replaced. Hopefully being early in the season, there will be sufficient items of what you need for repair or replacement!

When it rains, it pours, CynB! I hope Col will be able to find the perfect car at the perfect price to replace his work car!

Most importantly, I hope your preparations for the road trip are going well and hope you'll have a wonderfully enjoyable trip!

We have been having too many early mornings lately. We're both dragging, so it's off to bed very soon! Thinking of Everyone and sending powerful positive thoughts, healing energy, prayers, , and {{{{{HUGS}}}}} for each of you! Take good care of yourselves!

I'm trying to clear ''somewhere south'' in preparation for selling. 200 mile round trip so I'm spending extended periods there. Internet is poor. I have a bunch of inoperable equipment to remove. All will have to be hauled. They are located in ''a hole'' and with the rain, the ground is getting soft and access is not good.

Got a big chore done today. Burned my brush pile. It was big: 20 ft x 20 ft x 12 ft+ high., and densely packed. The initial flames shot up nearly 40 feet. I used the hose and drenched the ground around the burn pile before starting it, and continued soaking the ground on the side towards the house until it burned down to embers, where it is now. It's under control now. I'm taking a short break before going back out and watching it some more. There were some large tree trunks in there, so it will burn all night. I used a shovel and moved all the embers into the center of the pile so there's a large circle around what's left that contains nothing to burn any more, and the ground outside that is wet. It should be OK with regular checks during the night. I also sprayed down the trees that were closest to the fire, tho' none were close enough to catch fire. I chose a day with no wind.

Saltie, that is incredibly sad and maddening! I hope the perpetrators can be caught and promptly be given appropriate penalties! I sincerely hope the appropriate penalties will amount to more than a mere 'slap on the wrist!'

Heidi, that definitely sounds like a big job! Your neighbors must be extremely happy that you are so responsible and careful! Congratulations on the accomplishment!

Current information is that my surgical procedure will be near the end of October, which is not a concern to the primary surgeon. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

I haven't looked at that link because it'll just make me mad and upset.

The fire is still burning, though it's a lot smaller. I'm glad I burned it when I did because it's a windy day today, but not so windy that there's any danger left. It's just the size of a small camp fire surrounded by a 10 foot firebreak around it. I want the last bit to burn off, so I'm not hosing it down. There were a couple of big tree trunks in there. But I've left the hose there so it can be used quickly, in case.

Like your solution DOrA - I also would like 10 minutes with a baseball bat too. Julie, unfortunately our justice system in Australia for animals (and most other areas too) are backward and not anywhere near enough severe. I don not understand how nincompoops like them are allowed to possess guns anyway. I believe in naming and shaming also.
Good job Heidi - also a very pleasurable one - nothing like being an arsonist for a day!!
Good luck with car buying CynB - to me an onerous task at any time. Who do you listen to? Lemons in every car make. Hope your neighbors are agreeable to a new fence - not pleasant when you have to get the council to enforce it. We have a high cyclone wire fence down one side of our property and wooden fences on the others. The best thing about the wire fence is it is covered in creepers and hopefully passion fruit soon. A couple of possums also nest in there.
Had a bit of snow and hail yesterday, so cold for this time of year. Think my tomato plants have probably given up the ghost with this latest cold snap. Have 2 trays of seedlings also in my 'office' at home ready to replant. We are hoping to grow enough to bottle this year as we have already run out of the last lot. Nothing nicer than going to the cupboard and retrieving pickles and bottles of vegetables you have done yourself. Two of my sons are interested but daughter isn't One of my sons does most things himself - salami, beer, whiskey etc. Have been droning on long enough, time to get back to some housework. Take care

Heidi, that must have been quite a burn ;pile and fire, considering that it is still burning. Of course, large tree trunks provided plenty of fuel! That's quite an accomplishment to get all of that burned!

How nice to see your newsy post, Midge! I agree with your dislike of car buying. Good luck to CynB and Col when they must sit down and decide!

Hi all,
Had a lovely day yesterday. Col took the day off work and we went down to the Gold Coast where my daughter is holidaying for the week with her partner and grown-up kids. It was her birthday so we had some celebrations and I had a walk in the sand and a paddle in the ocean. Soothed my soul. I'm too big for a swim in public but the sun, surf and the sand were what I needed. We had a lovely happy day. No sign of Covid down there. People everywhere. We stayed away from them all.
Colin has found a car to buy. At work! Most businesses buy cars and get rid of them after they have claimed all they can taxation-wise, usually 5-7 years. This Mitsubishi ute (tray-top small truck) is 7 years old, only been used by a local salesman so low milage and he's getting it for $4,500 - fabulous price. These things are still selling for $10-$12K on the open market.
Also, we won't be forcing the neighbours for help with paying for the fence for 2 reasons. We want it done to our specifications and we can afford it, they moved in at the start of Covid and he promptly lost his job in the Events industry (no events, no work), they are a lovely young couple and have struggled until recently when he finally started getting work again. We told them, if they wanted to contribute that's fine but we won't chase them.

I never suggested trying to force the neighbors to help pay for the fence. I suggested talking to them and asking if they could help pay for parts and labor, since a good fence is in their best interest. And if they're having money problems, perhaps they'd like to help out a bit more on the labor side of it. But I also know that the only way to guarantee that it's done the way you want is to do it yourself.

Great news about the car CynB - one problem solved. Maybe your neighbours could help with removing the old fence. My son has spent over a week burning off the remnants of fences we had replaced a couple of years ago and were stacked growing blackberries down the back. Half a 40 gallon drum - worked well and provided him with a peaceful place away from us. Also many branches from our trees.
Air con is a major problem where you live - hope you can get that done soon. My s-i-l lives near Pacific shopping centre on one of the canals and and it can get hot and humid. I remember when we lived in Brisbane the humidity was pretty awful.

No assistance, Midge. There were seven pieces of equipment none of which run any longer. I have three of them gone. They were the easy ones. I have rented a 10K forklift to help with the project. It's kind of spendy but the scrap price that I'm getting almost covers the cost. The piece I hauled today weighed over 7,000 lb. At least it has quit raining. The ground was starting to turn mushy. We're supposed to have a few more nice days. We'll see...

Greetings to All!

CynB, what great news to find a relatively low-mileage car at a reasonable price! It must be a relief to know that task is accomplished! Even better, you had the opportunity to get away and renew your spirit by enjoying sun, sand, and surf while celebrating with family! Sounds wonderful! And your approach to the fence sounds like a win-win situation, especially if you can have it built to your specifications. There's much for you and Col to be pleased about! I hope the air con situation can be completed as easily as the other challenges you were facing!

Midge, it seems as if burning remnants of old fences can be meditative! Hoping it was very peaceful for your son!

Heidi, what great timing for a cool rainy day! You can be sure that there are no 'hot spots' and the fire is truly out. I also hope you're doing well and feeling better~

DOrA, I hope you quickly accomplish the removal of the junk pieces and can soon return home. Take care!

Our temperatures have really dropped. Autumn is here. I will have to switch over to Heat tonight.
I slept almost all day today. I have to get up early tomorrow morning for an 8:20 am telephone Pain Management appointment. I'm going to have to schedule an epidural since the back is starting to act up quite a bit now. It's nowhere as bad as it once was, when I was unable to be on my feet for more than 5 minutes at a time. Just spasms that make it hard to sleep, and shooting pains.

I have FINALLY gotten my driver's license reinstated! That b@stard ex-IH hadn't paid his property taxes, and the government suspended MY vehicle registrations and driver's license! I've been fighting with lawyers over this for months. I was finally able to prove to a swarm of government lawyers that I had nothing whatsoever to do with HIS property taxes from after the divorce. It's been a nightmare, and totally unfair, since I have had to pay a hefty fee to get my license back, tho I had nothing to do with getting it suspended. And it will cost me more to take him to court over this fee than it cost me to pay it myself. I DIDN'T pay his taxes, tho'.

Heidi, That's awful that they took away your licence and registrations because of your ex. And that you had to fight to prove they were noe your responsibility - and then had to pay the fees. What happened to fairness. Will they throw the book at him at last??
Col got his new car yesterday. It's a great deal - except that he has to get the plastic 'wrap' off it. It's what they do these days instead of signwriting, wrap the car in a thick plastic with Company logos and details on it. He and his mate who lives nearby will do that during the 3 weeks that Col's off work, We'll be away for 2 of them, but Mark will do what he can while we are gone. It needs a heat gun to remove it. That b@stard always seems to get off scott-free. I have no idea what will be done to him, and they wouldn't tell me if I asked. I know he doesn't have any savings, and his present wife lost every penny she had in her divorce because her husband got really spiteful over her adultery. Ex-IH was really mad about that because she and her ex had owned a really nice upscale Bed-And-Breakfast in Bardstown, KY, which has a huge tourism industry. Her ex got it all. IH thought he was going to end up with that business. I've heard from other people that ex-IH has has major tantrums over not profiting financially from his adultery. The 2 adulterers recently bought a big fancy house, and I know they had a really hard time getting the financing. So it's going to hurt him to get the money together to pay those delinquent property taxes. They fired all of the employees at his business, because they couldn't afford to pay them, and the 2 of them are doing all the work themselves now.
