The snow itself hasn't started yet, but is due to start any minute. BUT, the ground and driveway are solid ice already. I think the 3 cull cows will have a one week reprieve unless a miracle happens this afternoon. Mike is planning on doing the driving, but I don't think it's worth risking his life.

The snow and sleet have started. We decided it's way too dangerous on the roads to risk it for 3 cull cows and one week's wait.
Their water tank developed a crack in it, and wasn't holding water. I just patched the crack and am waiting for the patch to harden for a few hours before refilling their water. They do have a back up tank, but that's further from their hay and feed bunk, and they don't like it as well. There's always something to fix somewhere on the farm.

I'd much rather be out in the mud, ice or snow on a farm than in a city staying warm and dry.

Everything is now white with a layer of ice underneath. It's worse to the south of us, where the sale barn is. I don't think that there are going to be many buyers tomorrow. The snow and cold are supposd to continue most of the day tomorrow. Next weekend is predicted to be dry, so people should be at the sale barn in large numbers both buying and selling. Since this is a graded sale, where they lump the cattle together with animals of the same size, weight and body condition, the more cattle there are, the higher the prices. The buyers are there with big double decker cattle trucks and they want to fill those trucks with cattle that are the same size and grade. This way, they don't have to sort as much at the feedlots. That minimizes intermingling and minimizes potential disease transmission. They'll happily pay moree for that.

I agree, Heidi. The ONLY way I'll ever move back into town, or even worse, a large city, is if I am forced for what ever reason. I do like to stay warm & dry, though...

Welcome back Viv, glad you found yoir way back here. I wish a few others would too.
Heidi and DorA, I'll just stay a city girl. I used to love life on my uncles farm when I was a child but was always happy to go home where bath water wasn't limited, and we had sewerage, TV reception etc. Im talking late 50's early 60's here.
But oh, freshly laid eggs. Cream off the top of the milk, and freshly picked strawberries with the cream.

Well, I spoke too soon. Our family birthdays could not have happened at a worse time - we have 4 birthdays between 9-18 January. Partying for Maddy's 21st, brunches, afternoon teas etc means that Colin and Andrew have Covid. Karin is waiting on a PCR test, I'm sure I've got it now, will test again tonight, Lachlan and his girlfriend are feeling sick and isolating but not tested yet.
My sister did some shopping for me and delivered it here to my door. Much appreciated.
Andrew is 51 today and stuck at home with Em and her boyfriend. So I ordered pizza for the 3 of them for lunch. They loved it!! And Em made her Dad a chocolate birthday cake.

I got a positive on my RAT test. Not surprised. I actually feel a little better today than I have for a few days so that's good. I am having no trouble breathing, which is the big worry.

My nice little flip phone cell phone became obsolete, and I was told that i had to get a new phone by Feb. 1st. I got a new phone, which is a lot more complicated, sadly, and tried to activate it online. They deactivated my old phone but did not activate the new one, I've spent the morning straightening it out. Now I have a working cell phone again, but I have to learn how to use this new one. I hate learning new technology.

It's been raining all day, and it melted the snow and ice. Everything is at total saturation. It's supposed to freeze again tonight and then start snowing again. So we're going to have ice under the snow. Nasty. We put out more hay for the cattle.

Hi, Everyone!

I'm one of your people too, DOrA! Phone numbers were 2512, then 5782, then 8962 before going to a 7-digit number.

Heidi, I'm glad neither you nor Mike will be driving the cull cows to the sale barn! You're much safer at home!

Drive carefully when you take Robert to his cardiologist, Heidi!

I'm about to head to bed. My feet are driving me nuts.

I got back from taking Robert to the cardiolologist in Louisville (4 hours all told ... but a clean bill of health), fed the cattle and rescue horses, then got a call from another friend of mine, the farrier. Her eldest daughter just died of a drug overdose. I wish there was something I could do to ease her pain. All I can think of is to just be there for her, and give her a shoulder to cry on.

It looks like we'll be able to load out the 3 cull cows and the 7 calves tomorrow. That'll just leave the 2 replacement heifers of mine to care for separately. The ice should be melted by then. I was just able to drive my truck back to the barn with no slipping or sliding.

Cow #24 is gone! She was a major problem to load into the trailer, and made an easy job of loading 10 animals very difficult. She's now somebody else's problem. I sorted out the 2 heifer calves I'm keeping yesterday, and they were both very well behaved and easy to work with. So today's job should have been simple.... just run the remaining 10 through the barn aisle and straight into the trailer. But #24 stood in front of the trailer door and refused to let the others enter.... or get in the trailer herself. We had to use whips on her, which I HATE doing. I am SO happy that I'll never see her again.

I'm usually the one who hauls both of our cattle. He was very kind to do it this time.

Busy week chauffeuring Robert. I took him to his orthopedist yesterday. Last Friday I took him to his cardiologist. Thursday I take him to the hospital for a colonoscopy. At least I'm able to run arrands while waiting for him, sometimes. I always have a book with me as well.

I'll be delivering eggs to the food pantry in 2 hours. The hens have picked up their laying again after their Fall moult, so I have 16 dozen eggs for the Pantry this week.

Today was quite the eventful day, for a quiet day at home. Not only did I get 25 eggs today (it was just a month ago that i was only getting 7-8 eggs a day), but a rainbow colored hot air balloon landed across the street from my farm! I have no idea what they were doing up there in temperatures that only reached a high of 25˚F/ -3.9˚C today! It must have been bitterly cold up there. The horses spooked, but the alpacas held their ground and watched.

Hooray and goodbye to the pesky cow.
Hope you and hubby are on the mend Julie, and were able to get some help.
CynB - sorry to hear about your covid experience. I am trying very had to avoid it. Neph last week told me to contact him at the slightest sore throat etc as tx patients are approved to try the new oral drugs. Tx'ers have a morbidity rate of 76% with covid but do not know if it is Delta and/or Omnicron.
Have now had 13 out of 20 radiation zaps so on the home run. Had a fall on Tues night and still cannot walk as my knees are so swollen. Had xrays today so hope nothing is too amiss. Just very painful.
No 2 son is in Thailand, done his quarantine time and heading north to where his friends are. Will-be back on 10/2 if all goes well.
Very humid here today - only about 33c but feels like 40.
Had a lovely night at the beach with no.3 son before he flew back to Darwin - we drove him to the airport - I am not good with goodbyes.
Keep safe everyone and cheers for now.
(Can just imagine the alpacas just standing and looking - they really are funny animals.)

Heidi, you certainly have been keeping busy with Robert! After this flurry of activity, he should be good for a while with no more or fewer doctor appointments. At least, that seems to be the way our schedule works.

Vviv, it sounds as if you and Lulu have already bonded and having fun!

How nice to see you posting here, Midge! My hubby is doing better and hasn't fallen in about a week. We have arranged for a care giver for two afternoons a week and may expand that as we both need some supervision while walking with our walkers, along with help with household chores.

Hooray for bein 13/20 finished with radiation! You're certainly doing well! (My brother is at 18/33.)

We're having another snow storm right now. Nearly a white out. I'm so glad I'd just put out more hay for all the animals just minutes before the heavy snow started.
I can't remember Kentucky having such a constant succession of snowfalls. The previous snow here had just melted yesterday.

Morning all!
Midge, I do hope you can avoid Covid with your health issues. I haven't heard how things are progressing in Victoria. Once was we'd hear the statistics in all states, now that we're open and have thousands of cases per day, that's all we hear. We were lucky to have had fairly mild doses, Col's was worse than mine - strangely it brought back similar problems to what he had when on Chemo. His neuropathy worsened, he had pain in all his muscles. I just had a sore throat and head cold symptoms.
Heidi, it seems like there's been snow in many weird places recently. I was amazed to see Athens feet deep in snow, and Mykonos and Santorini covered in snow. Just incredible!
Hi Viv, did you manage to shrink your pictures to put on here?
Julie, and Midge - I hope the radiation treatments do what is needed.
