Here is some info on it.

This herb can be easy to cultivate in United States Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. In zone 4, it needs winter mulch and a well-drained sandy soil to survive. In zone 7, it can be harvested at least until the end of November. While it prefers full sun (as described on most plant tags), it is moderately shade-tolerant, much more so than most herbs. In dry climates, it grows best in partial shade. It can also be easily grown as an indoor potted herb.

Lemon Balm grows in clumps and spreads vegetatively as well as by seed. In mild temperate zones, the stems of the plant die off at the start of the winter, but shoot up again in spring. It can be easily grown from stem cuttings rooted in water, or from seeds. Under ideal conditions, it will seed itself prolifically and can become a nuisance in gardens.

Lemon balm is eatable, and I put young leaves in a nice lettuce and mandrian orange salad. I make a tangy dressing with ground fresh leaves and mayo for fruit salad. The flavor is not as long lasting in dried form as lemon verbena ( MUST find some again for next summer). Lemon verbena smells and tasts more lemon than REAL lemons do, lovely. lemon verbena make the best lemon sugar cookies!

Brenda, thank you, I have a competent surgeon and I am sure he can handle whatever he finds. I just hope he finds a little bitty polyp that needs a snip and a stitch and that they wait for pathoogy to give an all clear around the edges before thinking they are finished! I think that is the plan. I do not want to do this again!!

Since I'm alone I'll share a story.... Ally has been selected to compete in a spelling bee as she and another girl got the best results in a class trial - 23 out of 40!!!! I don't think she'll get very far.... But.... I got a good laugh out of the words she has been told to study, so thought you might too. A sample.....

harmony, myth, ballad, audition, compere, impromptu, anonymous, catalogue, concerto, maraca, monologue, ochre, symphony, tempera, virtuoso, calligraphy, lithograph, porcelain, syncopation, arboreal, artesian, herbaceous, monotreme, steppe, alluvial, defoliate, promontory, chameleon, arachnology, fulcrum, hepatitis, incandescent, algorithm, hypotenuse, meteorological, parabola, triathlete, adversary, obstruction, spinnaker, velodrome, orienteering, gymkhana, beret, biodiversity, equatorial, chameleon, stratosphere, rhombus, horticulture, incandescent, fluorescent, nomenclature, paralysis, quoits, equestrian, adjudicate, austere, insectivore, secateurs, prototype, and effervescent.

Huh? She's in primary school.....

Suzy, those are very good words and not as obscure as many I see in the national spelling bee here. they have some words I have not heard of here, really hard!

A nice word list for her to study I think, and wish her the best of luck.

Yes, primary I translate as elementary school. I have learned a bit chatting with Aussies this last few years and even remembered part of it.

VICI, come spring I will see what I can root or find as volunteers. I usually have pots up on the deck that get wind blown seeds and start plants. Root divisions also work in fall, but soil is a bit hard to dog where they are, we will see what I can do. Remind me, please, if I forget.

MizT, I'm not sure if the words are limited to the ones she was given or if these are just examples. I have been surprised at how well she has done when I test her without reading the list! She almost got effervescent without knowing what it meant.. I was surprised because her error was to leave out an 'f' rather than the s or c.

Tricia - I'm zone 7 so it should work great for me...thanks for all the info.
Suzy - I wouldn't have even gotten (is that even a word???) 23 right! I would ask for spellcheck on this site, but it's moving slow enough these days!
ello, Brenda!

I only have one Hottie picture that I know of, and I don't know if it's appropriate for this site. The bikini is pretty skimpy. And I don't know how to scan it into the computer yet.

Idiot husband told me about the newborn lambs. I searched everywhere, and can't find them. I think he saw the 2 born last week, and thought they were newborns. I hate wasting time out in this heat. It's only 87, but it feels like the humidity is off the charts.

Hi Heidi - I'm just checking in for a moment...I was thinking you have lots of baby critters around (or soon to be around) lately.
I just got all my "hottie" pics uploaded. Some are larger than I had hoped as I'm not too skilled with the scanner/resizer thingy.
I hope you will post that bikini pic, Heidi. I don't look anything like my "hottie" pics anymore...more weight and my hair is dark. Wish I would have appreciated the "hottie" days more - too insecure at the time. Now I'm older and wiser (well, a bit wiser - wise-cracker at least!)
