Has anyone ever made and electro-magnet using a lantern battery and a nail wound with wire?

If so, did it actually work?

If it actually was magnetic, what kind of wire did you use? and how many turns of wire around the nail?

The student I tutor and I do a little science experiment or lesson each session to break up our main reading lesson. We have made several attempts at an electro magnet with no success.

I have the drawings in a couple of books and from on line. Just don't have the right kind of wire or the right amount, I guess. The wire gets hot when connected to the battery and we even got a spark once, but no magnetism.
