Grow up, and that is a terribly hard thing to do. It is much easier to skip it and go from one childhood to another.

Just to let you know I have been very busy. Fixed all the arrangements yesterday. Funeral next Friday. Had Laura overnight and she was in a physical culture competition this morning.( a participation medal), Up to Belinda's this afternoon. Borrowed her 4wheel drive as Neil and family will be flying up from Melbourne.
After very little housework for the last couple of months I can see a few very busy days ahead.
And I am older than MizT but well behind Mamacita,

Don't know how old Mamacita is, but I think my mom is close, if not older. My mom does not look her age, can easily pass for at least 10 years younger.

Thank you Tami, I need the coffee this morning. Like your TOPP post today.

JUNE, I agree, your house is not the important thing at the moment. Just remove any clu7tter and let it go. If people who will be arriving do not understand where your time has gone recently, let them deal with it.

JUNE, how is Laura doing? I know we all are thinking of her.

I read other posts but that was back a page, and I do not remember. If I go back, will loose this babbling. OH, I do remember Rolanda saying the open house went well, and an agent is bringing another couple by to see. I hope you get offers soon, several offers, and they start to try to outbid each other and you get more than you asked. Well we can dream, right?

Could not do a load of hsaw yesterday, it rained on and off all day. OK, I could have put in the sloshy thing, but not hung them out. Today is sunny, even if we have high humidity, they might dry today. So sloshy thing doing it's job. Isn't it wonderful to put clothes in, push a button, and walk away??

Do you remember your Mom doing washing when you were small? How did she do it? I do remember and will come back and tell about it later. Now I should go tend to mine.

Leaving hugs for each of you with extras, and special hugs and wishes and prayers for June and family. Till later.

June, the last thing people are going to be thinking about is the condition of your house, they may even find it shocking if it looks too good.

Not here, sleeping,i wish.

goo goo goo :)

Interesting question MizT. I have a very distinct memory of my Mum doing the washing in a machine with a roller wringer on the top. I think I was probably about 7-8ish and my brother and I were monkeying about and I could hear Mum yelling. We thought it was probably our noise, so we quietened down some, but her yelling went on. We went out and found her in the laundry with her hand stuck halfway through the wringer. My brother who is 4 years older than me, had to reverse the motor so we could get her hand out. She sat and whimpered for about an hour afterwards, now that I think of it, she would have been in shock. It has brought tears to my eyes, it wasn't often I saw my Mum cry...

I clearly remember my mother using a washer and dryer. I remember it because it was my job to iron all the sheets and napkins from the time I was 5 years old. Is it any wonder that I do not own an iron any more? If it has to be ironed, it either goes to the professional cleaners or it doesn't belong here.

I am actually awake! I'm off to harness up Challenger in a few minutes. I need to drive him today since I won't be able to for nearly a week after the epidural. The buggies have good springs, so that's not the problem. To hitch Challenger up to a buggy means I have to pull it a few feet up behind him and lift the shafts over his back. That is too much work after an epidural.

I can remember the copper tub that sat in the top of a 44 gallon drum and they lit a fire underneath. I can just remember them using the old mangle (which I still have). After we had the electricity connected (1948) we got the machine with the wringer on top. Outside were the long wire lines with a pole to hold them up in the air.

Afternoon all.

I've had a lazy day so far. Hubby had to get up early for work, so I went back to bed after he left and had a sleep-in.

Last day of smoking today. Yikes, where did the time go?

My mum used to use a wringer washer as well. I guess I was around 9 or 10 when I was tasked with doing the laundry from time to time. I also hated ironing because my mum insisted everything be ironed, right down to underwear!

I remember my mother washing. My grandmother used to come over on a Monday with her washing and we would be washing all day. It was an old electric washing machine with an electric mangle. If the weather was good we would have lines of washing out, if it was bad there would be clothes horses placed around the fire to dry clothes. Things got a little easier when mam bought a spin dryer, it took out a lot more water than the mangle. Improvements occurred again when a twin tub machine was bought, the washed clothes were lifted out of the washing machine straight into the spinner. Life became easier when automatics came into being, the only problem was they took so long that washing only on a Monday became a thing of the past.
To be honest I now try to get all our washing done on one day if I can. Modern machines and detergents mean shorter wash programs on the machine.

Gail, it was easy to get a hand into the ringer of our machine also, but it had a big button across the top, you hit that, and the rollers were no longer pressurized, they popped apart, and disengaged. Hand came right out then. I got my hand caught more than once, but Mom was always there to push that button.

Mom did the wash with the ringer washer, but it was outside, in the room off the garage. I remember my dad building a fire in the heater, it had a "jacket" around the middle that heated water, and stored it in a big uninsulated tank. Mom filled the washer with nothing but that almost boiling water, and put in the first load, whites , with bleach. The same water was reused, now cooler for a second load of whites, then lights, then darks. Last load was Dad's work clothes, he usually worked where he got dirty, often greasy, by then Mom had to add hot water, as much water had escaped the washer with the rinsing.

there were 3 big galvanized wash tubs, on portable benches Dad had made for them. He put those in place also on wash day, as benches were heavy wooden things. The wringer would swivel 360 degrees, so it was used for clothes from washer to first rinse, first to second rinse, and second to third rinse. I guess Mom really wanted everything rinsed well hehehe. From third rinse, Mom put the cover on the mwashing machine, and they landed there as they came out, and were put into the clothes basket.

There were 50 foot long lines in the back, 6 of them on big iorn pipes made into a T, dad had cut the metal, then welded the T onto the post. There were bolts through the bottom of the T, where he attached the wire for the lines. He even got a come-along to tighten the lines, but they would still stretch with the load of clothes. so we had the poles, we called them props. there was a bent nail in the top so they would not slip off the wire.

As soon as the washer was empty, while clothes were in the first tub, Mom loaded it again and started it. It was usually ready by the time Mom got all the clothes through the risnes.

Being the eldest, it was my job to watch the younger ones when Mom washed. It took all of Monday morning and sometimes longer. Warm summer days, we played outside the wash room, and it was my job to keep everyone outside and not under foot. On cold days, we were in the house and Mom was not, and if my siblings were not happy with me, I heard "I am gonna tell Momma".

Mom often filled all 300 feet of lines, and had to take down the first ones, the sheets and pillowcases, to have room for the last load(s). Pillow cases could be taken down damp, cause they were ironed. that was my job from about age 6 or 7. Get the seams straight, put pillow case on the ironing board, and then put left hand behind you so you did not burn it.

Earliest I remember is 4 years old and living in Florida. We lived in an apartment building and had to carry wash to the laundry room and put quarters in. There were electric washers and dryers. When my brother was around 14 him and his friends would hang around the room at night. One night one of his friends got mad and hit the big washing machine. It started. From that point on, if nobody was looking, I would hit the machine in the right spot and get a free wash. It save 4 quarters each time

Hi all, hope the day or evening is a good one.
Loved reading about the old wash days.
I remember having an old swim suit on the clothes line and the goat ate the halter neck straps off it that were hanging down. I was very upset.
Must get ready for work. Bye.

Morning all,
The quote Brenda - and it's a good one!

Gail we had a twin tub like the one you describe, and MizT, Mum reused the water the way your Mum did. We had tank water and it was a VERY small tank. I remember during a drought one time, we had to strain the water as it came out of the tap because it had wrigglers in it (baby mosquitoes). I will have to ask Mum what she did about the clothes washing then.

Good Morning Suzy. I hope today is a good day at school for you.

I was lucky, Wind picked up and my clothes got dry. There have been pop up thunder showers all around us this afternoon, it is much cooler than norm at the moment. I got clothes in just in case the rain made it to us today.

Brenda, what Suzy said, sister sent the quote about tears hehehe. I should have made it clearer I suppose.

Waiting now for one more thunder shower to move south, if it does not change direction, this one may get us. then I must run to store, all out of milk and I mean all, must have more to make formula.

Good morning all
I remember my Mum having an old copper, using a big wooden tong-like thingy to get the washing out of the hot soapy water (imagine how heavy a dripping wet sheet could be). She'd then use the hand-wringer and it would go into the fresh rinsing water in the tub, repeat process into the second tub and then wring it out and hang it on the line, with the pole/prop to hold the line in the air. No dryer, very little room undercover to hang washing if it was raining.
Then finally the wringer electric washing machine arrived - still involved hand wringing but sooo much less labour intensive. Each subsequent washer was an improvement on the last.
A tumble dryer? Mum never had one even in recent years, even though we encouraged her to get one.
I was just wondering how Mum managed to do her wash in the copper with 3 littlies under her feet - it must have been very time-consuming.
Stoic is the word for that generation and those preceding it. We have all had it so much easier.

My grandmother always amused me. My uncle bought her a fridge, it was probably second hand when he bought it. It stood in the kitchen but it was never ever switched on. She would put things into it just to store them. I can never remember her having any food go bad or mouldy. She would bake bread twice a week, I used to love going there on a baking day. Her bread was delicious, so much so that the local travelling shop driver would call at my grandmother's just to have a cup of tea and some of her bread, he would provide the butter.

Morning.

Talking of Monday washing..... guess what I am doing??

Mum had a copper, with a thick long wooden dowel. No wringing machine..
I remember when she finally got herself an electric washing machine.. a Twin Tub.
Ironing... sprinkling the dry clothes with water and tightly rolling them into balls, and yes the underwear got ironed as well!
The Floor with the Wax and Polisher Machine.

My first washing machine was a Twin Tub. Bought an Automatic Washer just before #1 was born.
