Spoke to my friend a while ago and after a sleep and something to eat (if it stays down) she sounded much better.
The school she has been teaching at are getting together and having a 'cook-a-thon' and will deliver a stack of dinners in containers that can be frozen to her. What a wonderful practical idea.

Morning all. Only had about 4 hours sleep - I see a nap in my future. Hubby is going to his parents today.

June, what a wonderful idea to have meals prepared. People like that restore your faith in humanity. Wish I could help out, but all I can do is to let you know you are all in my thoughts. Every day is so precious when you know there are some very tough times ahead. It's something we should all remember in our lives - tell your loved ones how important they are to you. In case I haven't said it for a while, I love you guys!!!!!

Thanks Cyn.... Tami mushy/sloppy peas. I don't know if you can buy dried marrowfat peas in the US.These are soaked overnight in water with some bicarbonate of soda, then boiled until they are very soft. Some people like them very sloppy others like them to have a firmer texture.

Never heard of marrow fat peas, so we do not get them by that name at least. I will look them up later and see if we know them by other names.

The tornado in Joplin Mo has confirmed 89 dead, and was a mile wide, on the ground there for about 6 miles. Thank God for small favors, only 6 miles. They report 30% of the town damaged beyond repair or totally destroyed.

How many tornadoes touch down in our area? If you mean within 100 miles of us, I would say perhaps 8 to 10 a year. The closest to us here? Perhaps 20-30 miles away, I will have to think about it. How many potential tornadoes, or tornadoes that did not touch down but stayed in the clouds overhead in our area. Too too many. That is why we have the domes. That is why hubby became interested in them and then started building them for others and for us.

OH, speaking of domes, our friend who also builds domes, he has put up many of Al's dome kits for customers, lives in a 2 dome home close to Tuscaloosa. In the terrible tornadoes we had last month, a HUGE, probably 3 foot diameter 80+ foot tall oak tree, fell on his dome.

Now after the storm, there were photos of even small trees falling on houses and cutting them in half. Friend had only one of the timber struts cracked, and some shingles damaged. Repair he did himself cost him about $100. He had several years worth of firewood from that huge tree also!! THAT is why we built the domes.

Thanks for the explanation, MizT. I think the explanation of the domes was probably on this site before, but probably before I started posting here. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc., are all very scary to me. One minute you have a house and the next minute it could be gone.

When I was in high school, we studied geodesic domes, and their inherent strength. They ARE amazing, and cool to look at as well.

Heidi, and Theresa, the strength of the dome comes from the interlocking triangles, the triangles for strength and the interlocking part so they share a load. The energy of a tree falling on a dome is spread across the entire dome, not just where the tree or any object or the wind hit, and that is the secret of domes, that spreading of the energy.

I looked them up, marrowfat peas, and from what I read, they are dried mature green peas, or what we call garden peas (to differentiate from field peas that Southerns and northern cattle eat hehehe)

Marrowfat peas, perhaps same or similar to dried green peas that are sold here as split peas. Dried, halves of green peas with no pea membrane surrounding them. We use them to make pea soup, with ham or bacon for seasoning and flavor, adding onion and often carrots to the soup. Making me hungry for pea soup, and I have dried split peas on hand. Next cool morning, or if I get up early, I shall put on a pot of pea soup. I guess I like sloppy peas hehehe. They do have a rather strong "green" taste, only way I can describe it, reason for the pork and onions, and the carrots to add sweetness.

Three little girls playing in the back yard - each of them squealing as they're playing tag. Youngest grandie has a friend over. Good thing they're all cute.

Just had a 2 hour nap and now must get to work - so much ffuts to do, so little desire to do it.

I was outside weeding and surprise, surprise, it started to rain. MizT, I am putting newspapers and mulch down on all the flower beds. Hubby bought black mulch and what is done so far looks really good. I have a long way to go, but thanks to your suggestion the weeding should take a lot less time.

Yes Broni, the grandies were happy. I was sitting in the house chuckling while they were playing. You can always tell when kids are happy. Maybe we could take a lesson from them - all together now ladies: squeal ......

We make two different forms of pea soup, although I have never made the green variety Mum used too. We have Green Pea Soup, made with the dried split green peas, and Pea and Ham Soup made with ham bones or hocks, yellow dried split peas and soup veg. It is the green pea variety that is used with a Pie Floater, sounds revolting but I actually used to like them when Mum made them.

Good Morning my friends.
I got the Christmas ham bone out of the freezer on Sunday but I like it made with lots of vegetables. Soup now in the freezer.
Nice sunny day so I might tie the broken clothes line so that I can hang some washing on the two lines still in place.(If I do not tie the broken line the whole lot overbalances and falls to the ground). We bought the new line but I guess it will take hubby a few days to get around to fixing it.

Morning all,
I opened my news site this morning and the number one headline was 89 people killed in the tornado. The internet and computer were acting so weird I rebooted my computer, and the headline changed - to 116!! So bad.. and so sad..

So many posts to comment on, I've opened my Notepad so I can switch around...

June, I can't believe what a great thing Sharon's friends are doing! That is amazing and so practical!! What a relief for all of you...

I love peas, hate pea soup. Go figure..

Theresa, the newspaper tip was a good one. I used it when we redid the front garden and so far so good, just a few little ones growing up and they are shallow rooted and easy to pull. I think I will be doing it every year!

MizT, you've mentioned the strength of the domes before and I am very relieved to hear evidence of how well they fare under horrible conditions. I will worry less about you when I hear of tornadoes in your area now. Though I will still worry. Did I tell you hubby worked for a company that built big ones for a while? They built the one that went over the Spruce Goose when it was in CA.

I'm a Picasso from his period where people were split into pieces..

Theresa, Alie squeals rarely now. I can tell when she is happy because she bursts into song.

eeeewwww!!!

Mum sent me an email this morning describing her horrific mouse morning. She's still catching a half dozen a day. She doesn't use poison because then they hide to die and she doesn't want her house to smell. Apparently they've all come in from the rice fields. She has all her food in plastic boxes so who knows why they don't go looking for better pickings...

Think I will finish here for now. Should be doing ffuts.

Good morning all
Sad news about the deaths from the tornado - and MizT so good to know how safe the dome was when that tree hit it. I suppose it a similar scientific principle to the old stone Roman arch one where once the stones are set into place in the arch shape, they are super strong and have endured the ravages of time.

Just touching back to the pie/peas thingy once more and for the last time. From what I can now work out - obviously not the norm in Vic or WA - and in NSW and SA they like the floater which has a pie floating in the thick pea (yes split peas) soup - used to be available at Cafe de Wheels. In Qld we/they/(not me - yuk) have the pie, with it's top split open and a scoop of the mushy pea mixture poured on top of it. Bought as a takeaway in a bag, eaten from the hand with the paper bag as protection. A joy to many!

Pie and Peas - love it!!!! Yum Yum Yum.
It must be a throw back to my childhood. We used to have the baker deliver the bread and he also had pies and sausage rolls. In winter, Mum used to buy us pies and we regularly had them with peas.
The baker also had cream buns with jam and real cream in them.
