My word processor "help dog" just came up with the message - Things that go away by themselves can come back by themselves. Probably about errors and problems with software, but could apply to much of life!

Al and I just spent a bit of time putting new pickets along one side of our back porch. A neighbor's dog had discovered that we sometimes leave trash in a plastic bag on the porch. It has gates and pickets ( the porch, not the trash), and is a "safe place" for the kitties. We thought it was safe from dogs!

If it was raining or really cold when trash was full inside, it could sit on porch safely till rain was gone or it warmed up. That is till last week. Dog managed to squeeze between pickets and pry them loose at the bottom. They were the small (1.5 inch actual measure, called 2x2" ) pickets. The force splintered the wood around the nails and pushed the pickets loose. So, hubby cut some 2x4 pressure treated into pickets and replaced on that side, near the ramp that gave dog access to the pickets. Lots stronger now, hope that keeps dog off the porch.

It was funny, what clued me to fact dog was on the porch was Mama Kitty. She was inside, asleep beside the slider. Must have seen, heard the dog, and tried to exit through the glass! I heard a THUMP and went to check. Gonna chase that dog off her porch, she was!

Trash scattered on the porch was only a small part of the incentive for hubby. His kitty babies did not have a safe place if the dog could get to the porch! Gotta protect those fur babies!!

Now kitties and trash are safe again, but who's dog is allowed to run loose to cause you so much work?

Hello Everyone.
Looks like I've picked a bad time again, as I don't think anyone is here. I guess I'll go do the easy puzzle and come back in a little bit.

Brenda, unless we live in a city or town with a leash law, all animals can roam. I don't live within the city limits, so my neighbor's dog is free to roam into my yard. Of course, I'm free to shoot the dog in my yard. Kind of like the wild west.

Rena: Haven't been sledding in years; even when living up North after being married, we just never had time so didn't have a sled. But what fun we had as kids going down the long hill two streets over from us, and we would go at night-it was so great. Parents didn't have to worry then either about where we were or if we were safe.
fell off into a different time and place!

As I recall, all the front porch and front house lights were on up and down the street, and it was a real populated, but dead-end road, so we had enough light and always had a fire in a big metal barrel at the end of the road for warmth.
It was a long, long time ago.
Good night, all. The head is pounding,so it's time to go. See ya later.

Brenda, the state of Alabama has a leash law, but it is not enforced in rural areas, just not enough manpower in the sherrif's office and not a high proprity. Law will come into play if the dog attacks someone, it is then the dog owners responsibility.

If you choose to talk to the dog's owners, you usually do not get much cooperation. most will state, " I moved to the country so my dogs could roam free." It is pretty much up to individuals to make thier trash inacessable to dogs and critters.

We are not actually free to shot dogs, unless they are chasing your livestock, and we do not have livestock. Besides, I would not want to shoot to kill an animal. We do keep a pellet gun loaded and set for a sharp sting, and use that to invite dogs to leave our property. Does not take long for a smart dog to learn, walk around that yard!

It's funny how you become used to something so fast and then it changes and you can't get used to the change. The time discrepency really messes me up. I don't know when anyone is around anymore!

Dogs sometimes escape from their yard and roam around. We haven't had any problem here with dogs, more of a problem with cats killing birds and chipmunks in my yard. (sorry MizT) But last summer, 2 bad dogs (not sure if they were rotwiellers or pitbulls) got loose in my sister's neighborhood and attacked smaller pets and birds. They got into my sister's yard and killed their cat right before my nieces eyes. The authorities had to shoot them because they were killing as a pack and after the first kill, they couldn't stop. Her neighbor was outside with her baby just before that. They said she wouldn't have been able to stop the dogs from getting her baby if she hadn't gone back inside. Very scary! (My nieces got two kitties for Christmas.)

That is scary, Stella. It's too bad the dogs had to be shot but they have to be stopped somehow.
Lovely sunny morning here today. I wonder how long it will last. I was supposed to go to a meeting last night but the weather was a bit scary. Big wind and snowing hard. If I didn't have to drive the road up here I might have gone.

STELA, yes, a pack of dogs that kill once will not stop. does not matter if they are rotties, pit bulls or any breed. When we lived on a farm near here, a pack of dogs started killing calves. First one was young and small, but after that first kill and as the pack grew larger and smarter, they killed yearlings. A yearling can weigh 800 pounds or so, a big animal. It took months for law enforcement and citizens to kill all the dogs.

I know some cats will kill birds. Mine are afraid of birds. One kitty was lured up a tree by a parenting couple, trying to protect thier nest. cat kept going higher and higher after them (not in the tree with the nest, adjacent tree) till they got her about 40 feet up in the air and percarioulsy balanced on a small limb where she was having trouble hanging on. THEN they proceeded to attack with talons and beak and wings. Scared that kitty badly. Now when the shadow of a bird flits across the yard, both kitties head for cover. Might also have something to do with the eagles seen flying low over here lately. Kitties are happy to stay inside more daytime now! They still want out at dawn and dusk, to hunt for voles and mice and lizzards, with a few snakes tossed in on occasion.

Trivia for today from ABC News...

Carrots weren't always orange...
The orange colour we know is the result of Dutch cultivation in the 17th Century, when patriotic growers turned a vegetable which was then purple into the colour of the national flag.

Not sure I could eat a purple carrot.
