Very quiet on here.
I am afraid Ken has been generous and given me his cold. I felt pretty OK this morning but it slowly developed during the day. I can hardly talk tonight and I have told Laura and Belinda I will take them to the Movies tomorrow! (Sharon is working at the Scout Camp at the Scout Jamboree)
Off to make a hot lemon and honey drink and then to bed , I think.

June, feel better, I hope you get to take the girls to the movies.
Made it through the night all snugly warm in my bed. Temp inside house did drop over night, but not bad if you are all warm in the blankets. I have put on my double faced polar fleece robe this morning, we will see how long I need that. I am amazed at how much warmth with such light weight.
BTW I still have on my crocs with NO SOCKS and feet are warm too.

Fill up the page? Not a lot to talk about except the cold. Current temp and low for the night is 20 F (-6.66C) with a wind chill of 14F (-10 C) right smart chill for Alabama. I have seen colder with rare "Arctic Express" cold fronts like this one. But usually not as long as this one is forecast. there is an 8 day forecast and it only gets worse, no warming in sight yet.
Strange thing is happening. Cloudy daytime, so the sun cannot heat the air, then crystal clear nights, so warmth can escape. We need just the opposite.
Lovely sunrise, but that " red in the morning" I hope is not a warning.
Al repaired one of our electric heaters, it's thermostat was turning it off too often. It sure is nice to have a handy hubby. I always said HE was what I would want if I were stranded on a desert island. the other 2 big electric heaters he took to the church and he would not phone the pastor, our neighbor, to bring one back after services last night.

I have an appointment with the Vet for Melony at 2:30 today. I had to cancel my 2:00 dental appointment. Melony is more important.

Heidi, will be thinking of you and dear Melony today. she was soo lucky to have someone as caring and responsible as you to care for her in her last days. I admire you for what you do and doubly when this difficult decision has to be made. Hugs to you today.

MizT. I do what I can. I realistically cannot help all the animals that need it, but I can at least provide a warm, loving home to the older collies that nobody else wants.
Dogs like Melony are a real joy. She has been happy and loving, and a whole lot of fun. How anybody could discard a dog like her is beyond belief.

VICI, you are braver than I am, no one is coming near my eye with anything as long as I can say NO. Besides, now no one could see my permanent eye liner, my eye lids are dropping down so.
Heavens, I just corrected 8 typos in that short paragraph, and there is one more in this sentence. AAAGGGHHHHH

Heidi...my thoughts are with you and Melony
Thank God there are people like you to care for some of the animals needing some TLC.
On top of that,to lose 8 finches must be heartbreaking.

Yes, Nola.... I don't like the way this year has started. I've lost too many beloved pets. And I consider Melony to be family. I know taking in geriatric rescues can mean that they may not be with me long, but Melony is/was one of the special ones.

It sounds like she wants to go.I remember when my Dad was very low,he said it was very hard for him to keep living and he wished he could die peacefully. There was nothing we could do but we can for our pets thank goodness. She will be grateful to you.

It is probably against a lot of peoples religions or ethics and I apologize if I offend anyone, but I wish humans could be euthanased too.I would not like to live in constant pain knowing that I am never going to get better. To me it is cruel to see some of the elderly wither away, curled up and brain damaged. MY OPINION ONLY.
One day I am sure it will come.

She made the decision for me. She is definitely ready to go. I'm just grateful that she is in no pain or discomfort. For a dog of her advanced age, it's remarkable that he has remained free of all illnesses and injuries. She's never been sick, as far as I know.

I agree with you, Nola. I believe it is incredibly cruel to force people to continue living in massive amounts of pain, with no hope of recovery. If the person is competent to make the decision, they should be allowed the option of choosing euthanasia. If they are not competent to decide, a group of people who care about them, with one outsider as a check, should decide to let them pass with dignity, in comfort. I've never understood why Dr. Kevorkian was so reviled. He only assisted when the patient made the decision after extensive counseling.

The only thing we can do in Australia is to have an Advanced Health Directive (made while you are still competent) stating Not For Resus or No Antibiotic given. That reminds me that I still haven't done it.I must put it on my list of things to do.

Australia also had a Dr Nitschke who got into all sorts of bother trying to help the terminally ill.

People should be allowed to live and die with dignity. I don't believe that anything so personal should be the business of any government.

Among the Inuit (Eskimos for those of you who are not familiar with their correct name) when people became a burden on their families, they would become "snowwalkers". They would leave their warm outerwear inside, and go for a long walk. They would just vanish. Freezing to death is supposed to be relatively peaceful. Once the hypothermia sets in, the body shuts down and the person just goes to sleep. Snowwalking was considered an acceptable practice.

Brenda, I don't blame you for being annoyed about having to go out in -4 temps. I think I would hibernate.
June, feel better soon!

Heidi, I think you would have just left, thinking of you.
Nola, I was thinking the same thing when Heidi first mentioned taking Melony to the vet. It's a complicated issue though. I think it used to happen a lot more than it does now with docs just upping the morphine, but now it seems they have to be so careful that often they can't give enough to stop the pain.

Suzy... Dr. Kevorkian never did anything himself to assist in euthanasia, such as upping morphine. What he would do is give the patient what they needed to do it themselves, painlessly. Even that was more than the authorities allowed. They don't want anyone who's terminally ill and suffering to commit suicide. Dr Kevorkian gave them the ability to do so, so they threw him in jail. To me he's an angel of mercy.

As you can see, I'm back. Melony drifted away peacefully.
Tomorrow we will have a funeral pyre. The ground is too frozen to bury her, and won't defrost for at least 2 weeks.
